Done well it can motivate and reward "team first" behavior among the players. Problem is Uncle Rex was like a tee ball coach who gives everyone a trophy just for showing up. May work in the short term but eventually the high performers and low performers end up hating each other--i.e. locker room rifts between the offense and defense for 3 or 4 years in a row.
