Patriots trade for Saints returner Jalen Saunders

Patriots coach Bill Belichick was using joint practices with the New Orleans Saints to prepare his team for the 2015 season.

But he was apparently doing a little window shopping as well.

On Tuesday, Belichick swung a trade for Saints return specialist Jalen Saunders, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per a source informed of the deal. The news was first reported by ESPN.

Belichick might have just been trying to avoid the clamorous post-cut free agency period with the deal. Saunders might have lost the return job to Marcus Murphy in New Orleans and was a cut candidate heading into the roster downsizing period.

Saunders, 22, was a fourth-round pick by the New York Jets during a regrettable 2014 draft piloted by short-term general manager John Idzik. Saunders was cut on Sept. 29 of that year, just three games into his rookie season.

Since then, Saunders bounced from the Cardinals' practice squad to Seattle's. He landed on the Saints' active roster last November.

Now, the speedy return threat has a new home in Foxborough. Per Rapoport, the deal is for a future conditional seventh-round pick.

Thanks Rex, cut this young talented playmaker because he fumbled once just to show all the lousy vets he should have cut that he 'means business'  Saunders would have been our Brandon Cooks/Wes Welker/Billy White Shoes Johnson.

Exactly why New Orleans cut him. Not enough room for two awesome players on the same offense, have to cut one of them. You know, to make things fair.

Does nobody remember the medical issues and the seizures?  Couldn't they not figure out a diagnosis for his neural issues?  He always seemed to be one good hit away from retiring before his career began.  Pretty sure that had way more to do with us cutting him then a single fumble.

If Jalen does well, people hate Idzik for cutting him. If Jalen sucks or gets cut from the Patriots, people will be reminded about how bad that draft was--and continue to hate Idzik. This is lose-lose situation for Idzik. And a win-win situation for post count.

LOL at people freaking out about jalen saunders being great. Um, if the Saints thought he was anything special they wouldn't be trading him for a future conditional 7th rounder. It's not even a 7th rounder, its a CONDITIONAL 7th rounder meaning the pats didn't want to risk giving up a high SEVENTH ROUND PICK for this scrub.

I sorta had the impression that this guy was sorta kooky and the Jets might not have figured that out till they had him around for a while.  Transferred in college.  The weird car-crash.  Not common for a fourth-rounder to get cut that fast.

Exactly. Not to mention he couldn't stick with another THREE teams after the Jets...either the kid flat out sucks or there could definitely be some issues going on in the background.
