At the end of the day, Bowles is much more aggressive than Rex.

Amazing that a team can have a good D and NOT need REX. (LOL).

On that note..I love Mo but I expect a little more speed from our D Line. Lots of pressure but seem slower than I expect.

Did you see that wows Mo got for sacking Tannehill when they forgot to block him?? He was fast then..:)

People seem to be focusing on Rex's bravado and attendant circus atmosphere versus Bowles's calm, controlled demeanor or his general aura of competence, but perhaps the most important difference between the two is that, putting talk aside, Bowles is more consistently aggressive on defense, especially at the end of games.

We all know that Bowles likes to blitz, but unlike Rex, it appears that he stays committed to it until the bitter end.  So far, his strategy regarding blitzing doesn't seem to change when the Jets are up 7 or 10 points in the fourth quarter.  One thing that used to drive me nuts about Rex is that after building a lead by being aggressive, he would change the strategy in the fourth quarter by being less aggressive, blitzing less and even going into a prevent defense.  And this was the case even when he had Revis and Cro. Don't know if this will continue but I like it.

At the end of the day, I have to agree with you.

If we ever actually get a proper speed rushing olb it will be carnage.  We get pressure form guys like Harris who is not real fast and Davis, who has speed but his instincts seem straight line.

I don't disagree with you, though on Harris' sack, damn, it was like he was shot out of a cannon.

Bowles seems to be more effective right now. There was a 3rd and long, the Jets had been blitzing all game. The announcer Fouts I think said the Jets rushed 3, I saw 4. Anyhow they dropped into a zone. Miami was expecting another blitz.

Skrine was actually drawing the attention of the tackle off the edge. I am sorry but Skrine weighs 185 lbs. If he can draw the attention of the Tackle, that is good news. He beat him too.

I am just really impressed with Bowles game plan on defense so far.

Last year Harris had 6 sacks in 2011 he had 5 sacks and 4 picks what was Harris before Bowles had him a virgin??:D No doubt this team has more discipline we never get flagged and only 1 player got punched out.. And for the record Mac and Bowles are my favorite combo since I have been a Jet fan. I just get a kick out of the love a Coach gets when he's winning but I have no doubt if we lose some games Jet fans will turn on him quicker then Tom Shane picking your pocket on a crowded subway..

How many times have we said this.  Everyone forgets how much and how hard they loved Rex from his first presser through his first 3-4 seasons.  I love this combos but deep down know I'll be arguing with a group down the road who will write that Bowles/Macc suck, have always sucked and are losers who have to go.  Immediately

Bowles blitzes when the game plan and the personnel dictates it. He doesn't blitz for the sake of it like ryan did.

He  had a great secondary in zona; peterson, cromartie, Mathieu, powers. They weren't easy to throw on. Same situation here. And Miami couldn't handle the blitz, so he made it as uncomfortable for them as he could. That's good coaching,

This is what I am seeing so far as well. It doesn't seem to be an ego thing for him. But I will say he is impacting the other QBs, much like Buddy Ryan did. Getting in their head and causing bad throws even when they have more time than they realize.

...and makes better coverage calls behind the aggressive play calls.  When Rex sent the house, it was almost always '0' coverage...now its '0' coverage some times, cover 2 sometimes, zone coverage sometimes, etc...  It's nice to see QBs see the blitz and just chuck it deep to Cromartie's side of the field knowing he never has any help.  Who would have thought it would be a good idea to mix it up sometimes?

This is the best defense weve had on a long time. I think its better than the 09 defense.

100%.  This D is nothing but 1st and 2nd round picks at every single position.  Davis was a 3rd, Skrine was a 5th and Harrison was a UDFA...the rest, were all 1st or 2nd round picks (mostly 1st rounders with Harris and Gilchrest being the only 2nd rounders).  The talent level isnt comparable.  That said, making something of it is something else and Bowles is doing that very well.

Rex was just as aggressive in 2009, and parts of 2010, I think it was Petine who was a little less aggressive, and more conservative, and I think some of that leaked over into Rex and coupled with Rex letting Idzik chop his balls off for the greater good of his career really tamed him, and caused his 11-14 teams to be much less aggressive.

That said the difference in accountability, and discipline between Bowles, and Rex is night, and day.  Rex needs a roster full of responsible veterans who know how to act professional on, and off the field like the 09, 10 Jets roster had, where as Bowles is the guy demanding accountability, hardwork, and discipline, and won't except anything less.

He's okay if he is 100% total straight line but imagine if we had an olb pass rush specialist to go along with the rest of our dline.  Hootchi mama.

Meh, like I said in my post above...he literally ran the exact same play (an over load blitz) where he sent Skrine from the same place, nothing changed at all for 3 straight plays in a row.

He's got the horses to do it.  This D is loaded.

He and Gailey appear to be on the page, where they keep doing the things that work until the opponent stops it. I like it.

That was amazing, didn't they go 3 and out in like 6 seconds on that drive. That was my favorite as well.

That was both amazing and hilarious. I couldn't believe it as I watched it. Philbin might've been fired just for that series, alone.

At the end of the day its about the types of blitzes, the faked blitzes and schemes.  Which always made me laugh when the moron Francessa and some fans went on and on that teams picked up on the Jets blitzes and that you cant blitz and win

maybe the same people who said Eric Mangini was a good coach.  How is the 49er defense looking?

I remember people telling me that Rex took over a Mangini made defense in 2009. Lets forget the fact that this is not true. People dont remember that Manginis defense in 2008 was ranked like 25th.

Not defending Rex AT ALL...but it's a little easier to send the house like Bowles is able to do when you have a secondary like he has currently. I don't think he'd be quite so aggressive if he had our starting backfield from last season playing now.

I think he would blitz them and cover no one. But Tannehill still wouldn't find a receiver. Love me some Todd Bowles.

by who?  My pet gerbil knew we'd have a way better defense after we had signed Revis, Cro and Skrine.

Yeah but @Raideraholic said we'd have a worse defense.  Skrine was pure liability who wasnt good enough to play in Cleveland and both Cro and Revis were deep into decline.  The secondary in fact was in question.

Not that hes smarter or is right more often that your gerbil

Mangini got exposed here, Cleveland and this will be his last year in the NFL as a coach or coordinator I have never been this confident in a prediction.

even if Rex gets fired in Buffalo in 3 years he will have many more years in the NFL as a DC

I'm really liking Bowles, and I like his D.  But, i'm a little worried about the frequency of blitzing against a good QB.  The elite qbs in this league really punish the blitz.  The Mannings, Brady, Roger types will notice it, check into a hot route and shred it.  Their numbers are almost always much better against the blitz than straight 4 man rush.

The key is disguise and different looks, to prevent the qb from getting into a rhythm.  Still, it works for awhile and then you end up with a very fatigued defense, holes start opening up all over the field and tackles start to be missed.

we can get to the qb with 4 man fronts - a NASCAR package with Mo, Sheldon, Coples, and Leonard will be nasty
