Mathew Slater out for Pats

Recommended Posts

This guy is one of the best gunners in all of football! Could help us get a good punt return.

Gostkowski usually kicks touchbacks. Every little bit helps. Be nice if Hightower is still out.

The guy who has been on the bench for them doing nothing for two years will come in and assume the role of best gunner in football without missing a beat. It's the way of things and it is best if we just accept that.

We'll never have a good punt return day with Jeremy Kerley. Whenever Kerley doesnt call a fair catch you can expect the offense to start 5 yards from where the catch was made.

Why the hell can't we find reliable special teams players? This has been a problem since Leon Washington got crunched. I thought Walter Powell looked pretty explosive in his 1st steps but the brass thought otherwise. Quigley better not F up in New England, field position will be huge in that game as we all know that FG kickers don't miss anything 55 & in against us & punters always get 50-60 yarders against us, it's just weird.

Kerley had a good day on Sunday.  He is not a bad punt returner.  He is mid-pack in average and not particularly high on fair catch list either, though some of those guys played an extra game.  He is averaging more than guys like McCluster and De'Anthony Thomas that we thought would be instant upgrades.

He's not a good punt returner either. It's okay, its just not his thing. He had a nice game on Sunday with 1 good 20 yarder. When's the last time you seen that though?

Its crazy because we passed on Stefon Diggs. I could understand passing on Lockett after drafting Smith in the 2nd but we could have picked up Diggs in the 4th.

He only did it for 7 games last year and he had a 40 yarder.  I looked him up when people were chatting up Saunders like cutting him was a mistake.  Kerley is considerably better punt returner than Saunders or (Walt) Powell.  He had a 70 yard TD way back when too.  He does seem to fair catch way too much, but I think he gets a bum rep around here.  He is adequate or better.  I won't argue that he is special, but it is the coverage teams that scare me.

9.3 yards from the catch, per the stats.

And getting to see the kick game live.  He gets zero room to run.  The ST's is awful.

having to look it up is actually my point. Its not in memory because more often than not the man is either fair catching or getting 5 yards.

I take it you don't like Petty?

Wasnt a fan. He did okay in the preseason though. Having a guy like Diggs who could start for ST's and be an impact would be worth its weight right about now though.

With that said, its hindsight. I did like him in Maryland but I wasnt clawing for him, just not surprised by his value.

Then how does he average almost 10 per?  Looking it up is my point too.  People think he is worse than he is.  Obviously, I didn't remember much other than that he used to seem better at it.  He fumbled a game away and I think after that he got a bit more cautious, a habit which I think this staff may be trying to break.

I liked Diggs too, but wasn't his main problem being injury prone?  Interesting that he bring him up regarding specials because he is not returning for the Vikes.  They are using Sherels for punts and Patterson for kicks.

if Kerley can be productive as a returner. I havent been impressed with Kerley's returning.

He's been fine.  The blocking he gets is terrible.

Because its still early in the year and ripping off a 20 yarder at this point could really do well for an overall average that's mighty mediocre to begin with. averaging "almost" 10 yards per is still "under" 10 yards per when you have guys averaging 14, 17, 19 yards per...basically doubling what Kerley is doing.

I dont want this to turn into a debate. I said that he wasnt bad, but not good either. He's mediocre. Nothing to rave about. He's averaging 9.3 per attempt with a long of 22. That may be satisfying to some. I think we should be upgrading.

I agree.

I am not so sure how I feel about the upgrading.  I would love to, but I think the time to do that was/is probably the offseason.  If they can, of course they should, but I don't think it is that likely that they will be able to in season.  My point isn't that you have Kerley wrong, just that if people are using the whole anybody can do it better mentality they are misguided.  Powell and Saunders were considerably worse last year.  I think they were both 25% or more worse.

He's the best we have right now, though I would have liked to see Powell prove that he actually wasnt the better option by getting an opportunity. He never received it. Kerley's not the worst in the league, but our special teams could be better.

In this era where special teams (in regards to personnel) is pretty much an after thought given the new rules, its imperative that you have on your squad a kicker to can kick touchbacks, a punter who can keep teams inside the 20, and a return specialist that doesnt necessarily have to depend on "a hat on a hat" and can make the first guy miss.

Currently, our Punter is suspect and Kerley really doesnt make guys miss in the return game. In a situation where you have to depend more on the returner than you can personnel, I think Bowles should have atleast seen what Powell could do in game. Not saying that I personally think that he could have been better than Kerley, but I think Kerley is so mediocre that he allows for others to be provided opportunity.

I like Kerley, we should have traded him because if we do find a PR we probably wont see this dude on the field for 95% of the offensive plays. He's a better talent than that, just doesnt fit the scheme.

We can't trade Kerley.  He makes way too much and I think we'd actually lose cap by doing it.  #thanksidzik  I agree he doesn't seem to fit in and is not long for this team.

Powell returned punts for four games and averaged 4 yard per.  Kerley had his worst season in 2014 and averaged 8 over 7 games.  I think people got excited over Powell's return against the Giants, but preseason specials are a time of trial and error and the Giants were obviously in error mode.

I agree, which is why I felt that Powell should have atleast gotten an opportunity in game during the reg. season. Many of us got excited when we seen Powells TD in the preseason, but cooler heads understand that its "preseason". With that said though, I felt that he did do well enough to get atleast one opportunity when activated.

It is what it is. Here's to Kerley shutting me up this Sunday with a 70 yard TD. Going against the Pats we're going to need as many points from all portions of our team as we can get.

Amost 10 yards isnt good. Most teams dont have great ST personnel because ST's have been destroyed by this commish. Kerley hasnt fumbled, but he doesnt make guys miss either. Take Sproles for example, that 89 yard TD he ripped off was produced because he made 5 guys miss him. The fact that 5 guys had an opportunity to stop him shows that Philly's ST blocking wasnt the greatest.

Good returners can make guys miss. I'll say it again, the man isnt the worst, but please dont make his "almost 10 yards per attempt" seem fine. Its very mediocre. Anything under 10 yards has never been fine in my opinion.
