The Loss to the Bills

Can be ascribed directly to 2 things completely under the control of the Coaching Staff

  • Use of Devin Smith as a kick returner and allowing him to run the ball out as opposed to just catching it and taking a knee
  • Trying to throw to Kellen Davis

Football is football.  You will fumble.  You will throw interceptions.  That happens.  Brandon Marshall has been great but will lapse.  Eric Decker is good but does drop some balls.  You are limited by your players and what happens in football games.  If you are otherwise better than your opponent and play hard, you overcome the normal mistakes and win.

It is tough to overcome mistakes like that and win.

I am not saying fire the coaches, but hopefully they learned from this.

This team ultimately needs a personnel upgrade to be better next year than this year.

I think that's the number 1 priority of every NFL team No??

I always think of the way Rex would end seasons with wins & knock us out of draft elite. We got really lucky getting Williams but damn without those wins we might be heading into the future with OBJ & Amari Cooper! How cool would that have been bringing   Petty along with those 2 guys? Kind of scary that Houston blows too this year & that's where our GM came from. Tough being a GM without a franchise QB.

Did we?

Ronald Darby is going to be the DROY.

Lets go get Stafford!

Maybe. He turns the ball over an awful lot and might be cost prohibitive. The lack of success he's had with one of the best receivers in the game is not something the Jets should be looking for in a QB.

What does one have to do with the other?

For a guy picked that high and called the best defensive player in the class, he hasn't been great.

I'd blame devon smith not his coaches - they didn't drop the football.   Next man up, someone should be returning kickoffs, its not like he showed the fumbles doing it in practice, coaches could've used someone else, sure - but why? I applaud the coaches trying to change it up and get something going in the return game which has been terrible.  Devin just needs to hold onto the ball, even though its a pretty freakish fumble - this single play cost us the game.  We still had or chances in spite of it, bt this one play cost us the game.

We HAD a kick returner - his name was Walt Powell and he was averaging over 30 yards per return in the preseason and Bobby April decided he didn't need a KR/PR specialist, so we let him go. Fire Bobby April NOW!

Loved that kid in pre-season.  Tell me WTF April/Bowles were thinking letting Powell go?  He should have gotten a shot.

This is just a disaster. I am speechless. Either you rebuild or you contend, this mediocrity purgatory sucks!

To me this is Woodyball.  The money for Cromartie was a bad call.  They were better off putting it into OL or a LB and let the other CBs on the roster play.

That last drive, 1st and 10 on the 13 reminded me of the SB with Carroll not handing the ball off to Lynch.

Hindsight is always 20-20 but I wish we ran Ivory on 3rd and 4th down.

That series and game ending drive really hurt especially with having to look at Rex celebrating like it was Christmas with his sh*t eatin' grin.

That they need an upgrade and an infusion of youth is a no brainer. I think Bowles coaches scared and makes questionable moves. I would never have gone for it on fourth down. I would have kicked the FG and trusted that my defense, that had shut Buffalo down in the second half, would continue and get the ball back. The way it turned out with the failed fourth down that now you have the ball back but you HAVE to score a touchdown. Advantage Buffalo. Bowles needs to coach more conservatively and make the right calls at the right time.

If your really scared you would be more conservative..

true. But also its not like Powell is out there ripping up the league somewhere else right now...

which is even more egregious, since it's clear we don't have the answer on the team right now, and they've done nothing to correct what could be an easy fix. Re-sign Powell for two games and see what happens. This ain't rocket science, but one does have to acknowledge the problem before one can address it.

I have to agree with you about the FG. 3 minutes, 3 TOs, I'm thinking we stopped the Bills the entire 4th quarter, I think they pressure of our comeback was getting to them, they have a young inexperienced QB. Bowles should take the philosophy of WWBD, What would Belichick do? I think in the position with the clock, and 3 timeouts, he kicks that field goal 99% of the time.

Now if he was facing Aaron Rogers, or Manning in his prime he might have went for the TD, but he would have factored in how well the D had played in the 2nd half. There is a reason the Pats win almost EVERY close game, it's not always Brady, Belichick is a MASTER of decision making in the clutch.

I agree with both of the points of the original poster but we lost due to the turnovers plain and simple.  Having a total mix and match toss anyone out there for kick returns is stupid.

Very difficult to overcome 4 turnovers when you're not a very good Football team.  Was there some questionable decision making?  100%, no doubt about it  We can debate those mistakes till the cows come home.  But at the end of the game, overcoming 4 turnovers when you're offense isnt very good, is very tough, to near impossible to do.

After Gang Green was defeated by Rex Ryan and the Bills, their standing was worsened when the Steelers (6-4) beat the Browns, 30-9, on Sunday. A few weeks ago, the Jets seemed headed toward the playoffs as a wild-card team, with few challengers in their way. Now, if the regular season ended today, they would be going home. The Steelers are currently the No. 5 seed and the Bills are the No. 6 seed, while the Jets are on the outside looking in.

THANK YOU. Not only that but he also looked good as a receiver, and with Enunwa suspended could have helped pick up the slack along with Tompkins.   I applaud Smith for fighting for the extra yard and trying to make something happen but he has to learn when to just go down and live to fight another day.   Having stated that I would not banish him because of one fumble; it was also a good play by the defender.   Give the kid another chance; he is the only guy on the team with any speed (which is another conversation altogether).

This why you can't get caught up in records mid way through the season because a lot can change.  The Jets were never "headed" toward a playoffs as a wild card team because the season is 16 games, not 8.   All the Jets can do is to go out and try to win every game, and not get caught up in playoff implications.  Teams get hot and go cold at different times of the season.   I am more concerned about out situational coaching and playcalling.  If we don't get that corrected this team won't deserve to make the playoffs.
