Brian Hoyer injured : Which Houston Texans quarterback will face Jets ? ? ?

The Texans—that's the first-place Texans, pal—managed to knock the Bengals from the ranks of the unbeaten on Monday night, but they've got yet more uncertainty at quarterback now, too. And just in time for Sunday's game in Houston against the Jets.

Brian Hoyer, the Texans' on-again, off-again, on-again starter, left the 10-6 upset of the Bengals late in the third quarter because of a concussion. His replacement, T.J. Yates, promptly led a nine-play, 79-yard touchdown drive that gave the Texans the lead for good just 40 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Yates completed just 5 of 11 passes for 69 yards, including a 22-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Hopkins. Yet it was enough.

The Texans (4-5) are now tied with the Colts for first place in the super-duper AFC South.

Who the heck is T.J. Yates? He's was a fifth-round pick out of North Carolina in 2011, when Jets general manager Mike Maccagan was working in the Texans' scouting department. Yates made five starts as a rookie when Matt Schaub was injured. Since then, he hasn't started a game and has only played sparingly.

So who starts this week against the Jets (5-4)? Tough to say. Hoyer, whose Total QBR is a respectable 68.3, will be subject to the league's concussion protocol, which means his status will depend on how quickly he can responds to daily, independent neurological exams in addition to a steady progression of physical activity. There's no telling how that might go.If Yates does start, the Jets' defense—which is still ranked fourth in DVOA by Football Outsiders, including No. 1 against the run and No. 6 against the pass—will face a quarterback who had attempted just 36 passes in the previous three seasons.

And Ryan Fitzpatrick—the quarterback  the Texans traded this offseason—will likely be under center for the Jets. Ironic, huh  ?

The Jets will face a hot team on Sunday in Houston. The Texans (4-5) have won two in a row, including last night's upset of the previously undefeated Bengals. The Jets will be well-rested for the game (nine days), but does rest trump momentum? One thing we know: This game will be tougher than it looked a couple of weeks ago.

In March, the Texans traded quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who had one year remaining on his two-year contract, to the Jets

Houston wound up with a conditional late-round draft pick from the Jets — and a massive headache at the quarterback position. The Texans are 4-5 after Monday night's 10-6 win at the previously undefeated Bengals. Houston hosts the Jets on Sunday

Brian Hoyer started the Texans' first game, and was promptly benched. Ryan Mallett started the next four games. Then Hoyer has started the past four. Mallett is currently unemployed. Though Mallett was a mess for the Texans this season, on the field and off it, Hoyer actually hasn't played all that badly. Entering Monday's game, he had 13 touchdown passes and three interceptions this season. He wasn't great Monday, though: 12-of-22 passing, 123 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception.

Hoyer exited Monday's game with a possible concussion and was replaced by T.J. Yates, who threw the game-winning, 22-yard touchdown pass. Two games after Mallett's fourth and final start, he had to fly commercial to a road contest in Miami because he missed the team's charter. Two days after that game, the Texans released Mallett, a 27-year-old whom they envisioned as their potential future at quarterback. (Thus, the offseason trade of Fitzpatrick.)

Since that trade, pretty much nothing has gone right for the Texans at quarterback. On Monday, the Houston Chronicle reported that Texans coach Bill O'Brien told his players in a team meeting last week that he made a mistake by benching Hoyer after the opener in favor of Mallett. Well, yeah, that's easy to say now, after Mallett turned out to be an unreliable flop. But should the Texans have even traded Fitzpatrick in the first place?

On the surface, the move seemed reasonable at the time. Fitzpatrick is a journeyman, coming off a broken leg. He turns 33 later this month. The Texans signed Hoyer, a 30-year-old journeyman, this past offseason. But it was pretty clear Mallett, with age on his side, seemed their most promising quarterback. The Texans couldn't have known that shipping Fitzpatrick off would've preceded what's happened. Nonetheless, it was a significant win for the Jets' first-year general manager, Mike Maccagnan, who returns to Houston this weekend.

Maccagnan was the Texans' college scouting director before the Jets hired him. He worked under Texans GM Rick Smith.

There's no way Maccagnan could've known, either, that this deal would turn out so fortuitously for the Jets. If linebacker IK Enemkpali's punch hadn't broken quarterback Geno Smith's jaw in August, Smith might still be the Jets' starter. Remember, they traded for Fitzpatrick with the intention that he'd be a backup. But things often work out strangely in the NFL. Mallett is gone, Hoyer is under center in Houston, and Fitzpatrick (inserted after Enemkpali's punch) has relegated Smith to the sideline by playing solidly so far.And here the Jets are, wild card contenders at 5-4, heading to Houston for Sunday's game, which Fitzpatrick is expected to start, even though he underwent surgery Friday to repair a torn ligament in his left (non-throwing) thumb.

In fairness to Rick Smith, Fitzpatrick didn't show a whole lot last season, his lone year in Houston, for the Texans to justify keeping him as a starter. He had an OK year — 17 touchdowns and eight interceptions — but not a spectacular one. Smith looked toward the future by trading Fitzpatrick, and that's generally a wise move. With the Jets, Fitzpatrick has 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions. His interception percentage (3.2) is actually higher than last season's (2.6). He's currently tied for the NFL's sixth-highest number in that statistic. But he's had his bright moments, too, and the Jets are above .500 nine games into the season.

It's not like Fitzpatrick has come to the Jets and been a dominant quarterback. He doesn't look a whole lot different, to date, than he did last year in Houston. But he's provided the stability and serviceable play the Jets needed at the position. Maybe these Texans would've liked having him as an option.

I don't care which of them we face...  we're getting 3 INT's and 8 sacks.

**** it. Balls out to win out!!!!!

I think this game will come down what we can do offensively against their defense. We saw them shutdown a pretty good Bengal O on the road last night.

Let's hope the D can get some points or minimally setup our O in the redzone.

I wouldn't be shocked if we get blown out, or we blow them out. The ball hasn't been bouncing our way these past few weeks and were due for a dominate 3 pick game, one returned for a td. Same time I fear for our o-line with Watt, Clowney and fatboy clogging the middle, shutting down the run and forcing us to go pass.

They have no run game to speak of, and tj yates scares no one, the defense is going to have to score or put us in great field position for us to progress to 6-4

-- Ten things to know about the Houston Texans (4-5), the New York Jets' next opponent  :

1. Given up for road kill only a few weeks ago, the Texans have won two in a row, good enough for a first-place tie in the dreadful AFC South. Their first three wins came against losing teams, but they opened the eyes of America with a 10-6 upset of the previously undefeated Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night. Maybe the Texans are just a made-for-TV team. Remember, they were featured on HBO's "Hard Knocks" in the preseason.

2. The Texans have supplied the Jets with their general manager (Mike Maccagnan), starting quarterback (Ryan Fitzpatrick) and kicker (Randy Bullock). Maccagnan grew up in the Texans organization, working his way up the ranks from 2000 to 2014. His ties to the organization and his familiarity with Fitzpatrick (12 starts last season for Houston) paved the way for one of the best trades of the offseason. Where would the Jets be without Fitzpatrick?

3. The face of the franchise is J.J. Watt, who delivered the zinger of the year in the aftermath of Monday night's win. "Our goal was to come out here and make the Red Rifle look like a Red Ryder BB Gun, and I think we did that," he told ESPN's Lisa Salters. Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton over-reacted, making it a big story. Come on, Andy, lighten up.

4. Aside from his clever wit, Watt happens to be the best defensive player in the NFL. He already has two 20-sack seasons on his resume, and he's just about halfway there this year with 9.5, which ranks second in the league. He lines up most of the time at left end, which means Jets right tackle Breno Giacomini and right guard Brian Winters might have trouble sleeping this week.

5. The Texans have a quarterback issue. So what else is new? They've used multiple quarterbacks in four games. Brian Hoyer suffered a concussion on Monday night, so his status this week is uncertain. If he can't play, it'll be T.J. Yates, whom they re-signed three weeks ago after cutting perpetual slacker Ryan Mallett. Coach Bill O'Brien mishandled his quarterbacks from the outset, benching Hoyer after Week 1. He finally fessed up to it, reportedly telling the players in a recent team meeting he should've stayed with Hoyer. That's easy to say now; he actually started Mallett in four games before yanking him. O'Brien sent him packing after he missed a team flight.

6. Before completing the Fitzpatrick trade, the Jets were in negotiations with Hoyer, who has played well since the quick hook -- eight touchdown passes and only two interceptions in his last four starts. Yates was the hero on Monday night, coming off the bench to throw a touchdown pass, but he's hardly an iron-clad insurance policy. Three weeks ago, he was sitting on his couch, unemployed, when the Texans called with a job offer. Prior to Monday night, he hadn't thrown a pass since Sept. 18, 2014. The man hasn't started a game since 2011. The Jets wouldn't mind at all if he gets the start. By the way, the Texans are one of three teams to have three different players throw a touchdown.

7. Hey, look who finally woke up -- the Texans' defense. After an awful start, they've gone 10 straight quarters without allowing a touchdown. The unit includes a handful of big names -- Watt, nose tackle Vince Wilfork, linebacker Brian Cushing, cornerback Johnathan Joseph and outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney, the seemingly always-hurt former No. 1 overall pick. Another player to watch is outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus, who leads the league in tackles-for-loss (seven) since Week 8. The Texans have the best third-down defense (27.0 percent), which will pose problems for the Jets.

8. DeAndre Hopkins recently called himself the best wide receiver in the NFL. That might be a stretch, but you know what? He's in the conversation. He's third in receiving yardage (927), third in catches (71) and tied for second among receivers in touchdown receptions (seven). Did you see his brilliant, one-handed grab against the Bengals? Do yourself a favor and check it out. No doubt, Darrelle Revis will be studying it.

9. The Texans' biggest problem is they can't run the ball, in part because Arian Foster is out for the season. They average only 87 yards per game (28th), managing only 3.2 per carry. They'll have a tough time against the Jets' front.

10. Offensively, the Texans and Jets have at least one thing in common -- they pretty much ignore the tight ends in the passing game. They have only 41 tight-end targets; the Jets have the fewest at 16. The question is, would the Texans throw to their backup tight end with the game on the line? The Jets would. They did.

Brian Hoyer (concussion) remains in the league's protocol and is "not scheduled" to practice Wednesday.

Less than 48 hours after suffering his concussion, this doesn't come as a surprise. T.J. Yates will handle all of the first-team reps Wednesday, while practice-squad QB Zac Dysert picks up the scraps. Hoyer faces a stiff challenge to get cleared in time for Sunday's game against the Jets on a short week.

-- Houston Texans outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney should be back for Sunday's game against the New York Jets, Texans coach Bill O'Brien said.

Ultimately, though, Clowney's status will depend on how he feels after going through practices this week.

Last week, Clowney practiced in full pads on Wednesday, but that practice seemed to aggravate his back injury. He wasn't able to practice on Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Then his back injury was so painful that he wasn't available to the Texans for Monday night's game in Cincinnati.A few weeks prior, Clowney suffered a sprained ankle in Week 5 that was initially thought to be minor enough that he'd be able to avoid missing any games. As the week went on, it became clear Clowney's ankle injury was more severe than originally thought and he missed the Texans' Week 6 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

There's another complicating factor in Clowney's return. Typically Clowney's return to the lineup has meant a downturn in playing time for Whitney Mercilus. But Mercilus has now had three excellent games in which Clowney either hasn't played or played very little. His seven tackles for loss since Week 8 are the most in the NFL. He's also had all of his 5.5 sacks when Clowney wasn't playing."I think everybody’s in a competitive situation," O'Brien said when asked about the rotation between Clowney and Mercilus. "The answer to that is we’re going to play the guys that practice the best. If you’re out there practicing and you earn it on the practice field then you’ll play a lot in the game. If you are out there and you’re not practicing well, you’re not going to play a lot. If you’re in there and you practice really well then we’ll put you in the game."

O'Brien has admitted he messed up his QB situation from jump street when he benched Hoyer in game one. Now Hoyer may be out for this game, which is advantage Jets since Yates plays well ONLY against Cincinnati. Jets should win this game, but it will take a total team effort where catches are made, not dropped and points are not left on the field.

The Jets' injury report reveals C Nick Mangold didn't practice because of neck and hand injuries. The "hand" is a new one; Todd Bowles neglected to mention that earlier. QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (thumb) and DE Sheldon Richardson (hamstring) didn't practice. Fitzpatrick said he will play Sunday. Richardson said he's optimistic; Bowles called it a game-time decision. CB Darrelle Revis was limited with a sore hip, but he's expected to play.

-- New York Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick says he will start Sunday against the Houston Texans, just nine days after having surgery to repair a torn ligament in his non-throwing left thumb.

Fitzpatrick threw some passes but did not practice Wednesday. The plan is for him to do more during Thursday's practice, as coach Todd Bowles wants to see how Fitzpatrick handles everything from snaps to handing off the ball."It's more painful now than it was before the surgery," said Fitzpatrick, who will continue to use a protective glove like he did after suffering the injury Nov. 1 against the Oakland Raiders. "Part of that is they cut my hand open."

Fitzpatrick said the stitches will remain in his left hand/thumb when he faces his old team Sunday. Keeping it clean of infection actually will be one of his biggest concerns."I don't know how long they will be in," Fitzpatrick said of the stitches. "Just anytime they open you up, infection is a big concern, so just keeping everything clean, that is one of the main things we are kind of keeping an eye on."I don't think [the pain] will go away. But as the season will be going on, I will be getting better. So I have to wear my brace and all that so I don't see a whole lot of difference [between] what's happened the last few games [playing with the brace] and what will happen the rest of the season. .... It still has to heal, and it is going to take a lot of time. ... [The surgery is] not really a quick fix overnight."

Since trading Fitzpatrick to the Jets for a conditional late-round pick in March, Houston hasn't been able to fix its quarterback situation. Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett had their struggles early before Mallett was eventually let go. Hoyer (concussion) didn't practice Wednesday, and T.J. Yates, who replaced him during the Texans' Monday night win over the Cincinnati Bengals, could start against the Jets.Houston also claimed Brandon Weeden off waivers Wednesday, a source told ESPN.com's Tania Ganguli.Fitzpatrick has an opportunity to show the Texans they made a mistake trading him.

"I have been on enough teams now that you don't hold grudges, but it plays into it," Fitzpatrick said."The fact that they didn't necessarily want me at the end of the year plays into it a little bit for me from that personal standpoint, but it is not a big thing other than we are trying to win a game and get back on track."

"They had their plan of what they wanted to do, and I didn't happen to be in those plans. Everybody has to move on in this league."

Jets QB Threw a Little Today, Will Take Snaps Thursday & Still Plans to Be Ready to Go vs. Texas

Ryan Fitzpatrick was back at practice today, and even though the Jets quarterback only did a little throwing before observing the rest of the team's practice ahead of Sunday's game at Houston, he made his timeline to return to the starting lineup from his thumb injury very ho-hum."I definitely will do a lot more tomorrow," Fitzpatrick said matter-of-factly at his locker right after practice. "I think it was a pretty positive day today in terms of being out there and throwing."

So then you plan on starting Sunday?

"Yes" was his one-word answer. But let's get real. We're talking about a football player preparing to butt heads and bang hands with live opponents less than two weeks after undergoing left thumb surgery. Yes, the procedure lasted only "about an hour or so." Yes, it was to his thumb, his left thumb. But it was indeed surgery."I think that's why so many of the guys respect  him in the locker room," wideout Brandon Marshall said a few minutes later, "because at this point everyone's banged up. You have guys that want to milk it a little bit or may not have the grit or the toughness to push through. And he does, so we respect that."

To be sure, Fitzpatrick played with the injured thumb for the win over Jacksonville and the loss to the Bills. He wasn't sure if Houston would be in the cards but he's passing all the mile markers so far."I wasn't sure really what to expect, to be honest," he said. "Coming out of surgery, I didn't feel great the first couple of days, just groggy and trying to get over that. But I feel a lot better today than I did yesterday, and hopefully I'll take the same step tomorrow."

Todd Bowles isn't committing totally to the Fitz-as-starter outcome just yet. "I can tell you tomorrow," said the head coach. But he also knows how this play has been diagrammed and is being executed."That was the whole plan, just to have him throw some today, take some more snaps tomorrow. He should feel significantly better," Bowles said, adding that Geno Smith practiced well with the first team and that "if somehow Fitz doesn't play, we're more than confident that Geno can do the job."Something more than plain competitive drive could be pushing Fitzpatrick toward this start. He downplayed it as he did with the surgery, but you can hear it in his words: He wants a shot at the Texans, his team of last season.

"I've got a lot of buddies on the other sideline, so that's part of it," he said. "And I've been on enough teams now where you don't hold grudges. But I was on that team last year, I was still under contract, and now I'm on this team this year. The fact that they didn't necessarily want me at the end of the year plays into it a little bit for me."But Fitzpatrick assured that it's not that big of an issue for him, perhaps just enough to help the healing along while giving him that little extra edge.

"We're out there trying to win a game and get back on track," he said, "so the personal stuff has to be set aside and I've got to try to win a football game."

- While much of the quarterback attention will surround Ryan Fitzpatrick looking to make Houston regret trading him, the other quarterback in Sunday’s Jets-Texans game is flying under the radar.

T.J. Yates is expected to make his first start since his rookie season in 2011, in place of the injured Brian Hoyer (concussion). The New York Jets defense knows it has to take care of business against a quarterback who was literally sitting on his couch drinking coffee when the Texans called him three weeks ago to return.“He can run, he’s big, he has a strong arm,” Jets coach Todd Bowles said. “We know that he can run, he’s a good athlete that way. He’s got a cannon of an arm. He can throw the ball in there and he’s started some games in this league. So you’re scared about any starting quarterback coming into the league and can start in the game the next week you’re playing him.”

Yates threw his only touchdown in the past four seasons on Monday night in relief of an injured Hoyer to help the Texans upset the Bengals.

In 2011, Yates played in six games and completed 61.2% of his passes for 949 yards and three touchdowns, with three interceptions, and fumbled four times. He helped lead the Texans to a playoff victory over the Bengals that season.Since then, he has played in nine games and attempted a total of 47 regular-season passes.

Bowles says the Jets won’t go back and watch old film of Yates, but rather prepare by studying Houston’s offense.“We’re playing against the scheme,” Bowles said. “You can’t go back and look. We know the guy can throw the ball. We know he’s a good football player, so you work on what you see on film.”Bowles added, “If there was a vast difference between a running quarterback and a throwing quarterback, you kind of look at some things. But he’s a true quarterback. He can throw the ball. He’s not too far behind Hoyer, so we’ll just get ready to play Houston in general.”

The Jets won’t need to watch a ton of film to know who Yates will be looking to throw to. DeAndre Hopkins is the most targeted receiver in the NFL thus far, and Darrelle Revis will likely have his hands full.“One of the best in the league,” Revis said of Hopkins. “He kind of reminds me of Anquan Boldin. They give him a lot of targets. They move him around, he is a go-to-guy.”

“You see some plays on film and they throw the ball up to him and you figure the DB is coming down with it and he ends up with it instead,” Revis added. “He definitely has great ball skills. Every time the ball is in the air, you can tell he feels he wants to go attack it.”

Revis did not sound like he was taking anything for granted with Yates.“You got to go back to previous games that Yates started and try to pick up tendencies,” Revis said of how to prepare for Yates with little film to go on this season. “That is how we got to look at it.”

- Although Houston Texans receiver DeAndre Hopkins hasn't practiced this week, that rest is only precautionary.

"I'm 100 percent," Hopkins said Thursday, twice, during media availability.

The Texans' No. 1 receiver will face a New York Jets defense this week that includes All Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis. Hopkins' availability for the game is a major positive for a team going through quarterback turmoil.Starting quarterback Brian Hoyer isn't expected to play Sunday as he recovers from a concussion. T.J. Yates will start his first game since Jan. 15, 2012, when he started a Texans playoff game for then-starter Matt Schaub.

Hopkins has been a favorite target of all of the three quarterbacks who have played for the Texans this season -- Hoyer, Yates and Ryan Mallett, who is no longer on the team. He has been targeted at least 11 times in every game this season. According to ESPN Stats & Info, his nine-game streak of at least 11 targets is the longest of any player in the past 15 years.

Hopkins' 123 targets this season ranks first in the NFL. His 927 yards ranks third after the Pittsburgh Steelers' Antonio Brown and the Atlanta Falcons' Julio Jones.

UNC fans used to refer to T.J. Yates as "T.J. Yikes".  Proving that not only do UNC fans lack creativity but also that he cannot be trusted at any level.  No excuses if we fail to beat him.

My co-worker played SS for UVA.  He injured T.J. Yates on a Python blitz.  Bowles uses those types of blitzes too.

Who is the Texans back up?

Brandon Weeden.  They just claimed him off waivers yesterday.  Since he is only now getting acclimated to the playbook, I doubt we'll see Weeden on the field unless the circumstances are dire.

Jets DE Sheldon Richardson (hamstring) missed practice for the fourth straight day and is listed as questionable for Sunday. If he plays, it'll be a first for 2015. No Jets player who missed an entire week of practice was active for that particular game. Todd Bowles said it will be a game-time decision, but I'd be surprised if Richardson plays. CB Buster Skrine (shoulder/hand) is questionable. He was "limited" after two full days, so that's a concern. QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (thumb) is good to go.

-- Texans quarterback Brian Hoyer returned to the practice field Friday for the first time since suffering a concussion that caused memory loss, but he will not play Sunday against the Jets.Hoyer did not practice with his teammates. Instead, he worked off to the side with a trainer. Hoyer was injured in Monday night's win over Cincinnati. T.J. Yates will start for Houston (4-5).

Texans receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who said Thursday he was 100 percent healthy, on Friday practiced for the first time all week and is expected to play Sunday. Hopkins did not practice Wednesday or Thursday while nursuing a knee injury."T.J. is a good quarterback; he threw me my first NFL touchdown, preseason against the Vikings," Hopkins said Friday. "He knows what he is doing. He is in here working extra to gain a better edge of this offense and we are doing a good job of helping him out, doing things after practice and before practice with him."

Yates entered Monday night's game against the Bengals after Hoyer told coaches he was struggling to remember plays. Hoyer was then diagnosed with a concussion.Yates threw the game-winning touchdown pass to Hopkins, the only touchdown scored Monday night in Houston's 10-6 win over the previously undefeated Bengals.

-- Defensive end Sheldon Richardson will be a game-time decision this Sunday, New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles said.

Richardson was on the side and did not participate in practice this week due to a hamstring injury, which does not bode well for playing against the Texans.

ESPN.com Jets reporter Rich Cimini notes that no Jets player who had missed an entire week of practice this season was active for that week’s game.“I’ll see him warm up before the game and make a decision after that,” Bowles said.

Bowles said quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick (thumb surgery) is ready to go and will start against the Texans.Safety Dion Bailey (ankle) has been ruled out while cornerback Buster Skrine (shoulder/hand) is questionable. Skrine was limited on Friday after going through two full days of practice earlier in the week.
