Matt39
Sports Illustrated's Don Banks reports Jets DE Sheldon Richardson could still be suspended this season. The same is true of Raiders OLB Aldon Smith. Richardson was arrested on July 14 on a variety of serious traffic-related charges. Richardson, of course, was suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the league's substance-abuse policy in a separate matter. JustInFudge
Aldon had a lot more runs ins with the law, no? I know Sheldon failed drug tests but isnt this his first time in trouble with the law?
Lupz27
See the injustice here for Richardson is whether right or wrong the story, not the actual final outcome of the official penalties, traffic summons will determine his fate, the law says fine and revocation of license (assuming dropped to reckless driving ), but the NFL says you lose millons, and your job for an extended period of time. flgreen
Richardson may get a 1-4 game suspension for the stupidity in Mo., but it won't be the 1 year Smith just got. The 10 game penalty will come next time Richardson picks up a joint.

fitzgod
The cops said they smelled weed However they found NO evidence of weed in the vehicle or on or in any of the occupants so there were NO drug charges Not sure the NFL is suspending players for traffic violations

shuler82
wouldn't the nfl wait until after his hearing before imposing any additional punishment? if all sheldon gets is a slap on the wrist and a speeding ticket, how does the nfl suspend him? The NFL doesn't have to wait but it's unlikely the NFL takes to punishing a player for something the player was not convicted of committing so the NFL likely waits to see what the court does. The NFL has to conduct its own investigation before it can assess a punishment and without access to a police report or other state evidence that satisfactorily proves Richardson violated a player policy the NFL has little to go on other than Richardson's own statements. If Richardson pleads guilty or no contest to any crime then that is compelling evidence that Richardson did what was alleged and the NFL can easily punish on that admission. So that is another reason for the NFL to defer to the criminal proceedings.

Any employer can do this. If I got arrested and made the national news my employer would be like "you're kyrptonite, see ya." Zero evidence that he himself was smoking fwiw Zero? Lol. There is some evidence. Enough for "beyond a reasonable doubt"? Maybe not. But ZERO? Smelling it in the car is some evidence. Sorry just pet peeve when people say "no smoking gun" means there is "zero evidence." wouldn't the nfl wait until after his hearing before imposing any additional punishment? if all sheldon gets is a slap on the wrist and a speeding ticket, how does the nfl suspend him? Jiffy Lube would fire its employees if they made the paper doing stuff like this. Why does NFL have to act like a court of law when every other employer can fire people for getting arrested for beating wives, bringing guns to airports, drugs, etc.? NFL is actually pretty darn lenient when you think about it. Probably because of the huge financial investment made in some of these guys. I'd be in the parking lot with a box in 30 seconds if I pulled a Greg Hardy or an Aldon Smith. No questions asked. These guys are lucky it isn't game over for them. ylekram
its moving violations. he has already gotten 2 delays. how long do you need to discuss a moving violation with no accident or injuries ? it wasn't a ticketed moving violation. it was a criminal arrest. unless the DA has a very favorable plea bargain for Richardson, Richardson will ask for a continuance. thats how criminal cases work in the states. he hasn't even made a plea yet, never mind pre-trial

munchmemory
Does the NFL really think that being away from the structure of football for a year is going to do these guys any good? I don't think so. IMO, they are trying to find a suitable--and meaningful to the player--punishment. They're all millionaires. So fining them means next to nothing. Klecko73isGod
So your position is that the NFL's duty is rehabilitation and not punishment? I'm ok with fining them and not letting them play in games. But making them stay away from their teams and away from that structure just seems counterproductive to me. bitonti
all the charges were misdemeanors. the worst thing Sheldon did in July was not inform the Jets he was arrested. If that results in a 1 year ban, it would be surprising.
