By Glenn Naughton   Rich Cimini of ESPN New York is reporting the Jets worked out up to seven kickers today, but more notably took a look at the recently released Dri Archer. Can't be much worse than what we have.  Cro should be running back kicks, but at punt returner I'll take a guy who is elusive over Kerley, who runs right at defenders.

the steelers waived him, he cleared waivers and has been out of work for 3 weeks.  I found some steelers fans opinions of him and they were not nice, lol

Good. It's about time the Jets took note that returning kickoffs and punts is a skill and not everyone who's fast or shifty should be allowed to do so without some sort of seasoning.

returning kick offs is an unnecessary skill in today's nfl.   Down the ball. Stats say unless you have a Hester or Deion like player you are better off downing it

punt returns are a different story

Has anyone asked Bowles what the **** is going on with the special teams? It's a direct reflection of the coaching. No one has good special teams personnel(save the Hesters of the world)...it's all execution.

you would have to ask maccagnan.  you can't fix the entire roster in 1 year, but he ignored specials.  Oh wait, he brought in the concussion guy

I dont think it's really on Maccagnan save a viable returner. Punt team, punt return, kick off team and kick return have all been collective disasters...and its not just the kickers and returners. They just look poorly coached- guys who play well on specials are generally coached up. The Pats have guys who buy in to playing on those units....starters too.

Christine Michael was cut in Dallas.  I liked him coming out of college, not as a return guy, but just as good a place as any to post.  JMO.

Cowboys waived RB Christine Michael.

Michael's Cowboys "career" ends with 15 carries for 51 yards. Dallas is the second team in three months to give up on the 2013 second-rounder after the Seahawks gave him away in September. Michael is a freak athlete, but has never shown a feel for the professional game, and has reportedly caused headaches in the locker room. It's alarming he couldn't carve out a role on a team rolling with Darren McFadden as a workhorse. Now 25, Michael will likely get a third chance, but his fantasy future is grim.

The New York Jets hosted 12 free-agent tryouts on Tuesday, and it's not hard to figure out the theme -- special teams.

They worked out seven placekickers, one punter and four kick returners, including Dri Archer and Trindon Holliday.

Archer is the most intriguing name. A third-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelersin 2014, he's a 5-foot-8 speedster who averaged 25.3 yards per kickoff return before getting cut after eight games this season. Holliday, a 5-foot-5 blur, has played for five teams, including the New York Giants. They also worked out Tandon Doss (Jacksonville Jaguars) and Damaris Johnson (Houston Texans).

The Jets are hurting for a kickoff returner. They lost their top two, Chris Owusuand Zac Stacy, to season-ending injuries, so now they're down to Kenbrell Thompkins, Devin Smith and Antonio Cromartie. Smith cost them a touchdown with his fumble in last week's loss to the Buffalo Bills, so the coaches probably will be hesitant to go back to him. Cromartie is returning from a thigh injury, so he's not the best candidate.

As for the heavy interest in kickers, the Jets probably are gathering information for their contingency list. Randy Bullock, signed last week to replace Nick Folk, didn't have any hiccups in his Jets debut. None of the free agents are experienced veterans. The only notable is Andrew Furney, who spent time in the Jets' training camp. The others: Corey Acosta, Michael Barnard, Tommy Frevert, Zach Hocker, Marvin Kloss and Giorgio Tavecchio.

The Jets have zero wiggle room on the roster for a player that is strictly a returner. Specials coverage has been better in the last few weeks, as has been Quigley.

You have to remember injuries are hurting the special teams. When Cro goes out, Marcus Williams gets a start and he's taken off of specials. Antonio Allen and Jarrett would be solid special teams players but they're done for the year. Injuries trickle down.

Dri Archer is a RB also we could use a scat back.

He's been worked out by at least 5 teams already and is unemployed. He's not very big and obviously as a former third round pick you have to figure there is something teams don't like about him. Which player are you cutting for this guy to return a few kicks? He wouldn't see any offensive reps.

Sucks that Devin Smith fumbled because now they are afraid to use him.  He was a k and punt returner at Ohio State.

Don't turn the ball over and don't get hurt, the two biggest things that screw up a young player quick in this league.  It appears to me that Bowles is the type that if you lose his trust you are in trouble.

Yeah.  So far the kid looks a little overwhelmed by the NFL.  Have a feeling we'll have to wait until next year to see if he is going to be anything in the NFL

Sometimes circumstances dictate your career.  Perhaps Devin Smith would have been better off getting drafted by San Diego or somewhere else where the QB can utilize his skills.  Assuming he can stay healthy.  Although it is really about "the catch", OBJ may be an unknown if he were drafted by the Jets and would never be on the cover of Madden or 50 different commercials.
