Next up? The Houston Texans

The Jets (5-4) are 1-3 in their last 4 games are traveling to Houston Sunday to face a Texans (4-5) team who are 3-1 in their last 4 games.  Both teams coming off of huge Nationally televised games; The Texans team knocking off an undefeated Bengals team on the road.  The Jets losing embarrassingly to their ex-Head Coach in their building vs. a division foe in the Bills.  It's truly a battle of a team heading in the right direction battling for the division vs. a team desperately trying to hold on to a season that started very well but is on the verge of sinking quickly to the bottom of their division and out of the playoff picture.

The tale of the tape makes this an intriguing match-up.  Since both teams are better known for their Defense, we'll start the comparison there:

The Texans are doing a little bit better vs. the pass than the Jets this season.  The Texans are holding teams to 222.4 passing yards per game. The Jets?  230.3 per game.  Pretty well evenly matched with the Jets giving up 1 less TD on the season (15) than the Texans (16).  However, the Jets have 10 picks on the season the Texans 7.  The Texans have a slight edge on the Jets on overall passing yards allowed - 2,002 vs. 2,073.  However, the Jets hold QB's to a 57% completion vs. the Texans, 61.5%.  The Jets also do a better job vs. the pass per attempt - 6.1 vs. 7.1  The Texans get home on the QB more than the Jets; 23 sacks vs. 21 sacks.  Overall, they are pretty evenly matched vs. the pass.  The biggest difference is that the Texans seem to do more with their front 4 than the Jets.  The Jets use the blitz a lot where the Texans seem to be in coverage more often hoping their front 4 led by the best Defensive player in the league, JJ Watt, can create pressure without having to send a blitz.

Where these 2 teams differ on defense is how they defend the run.  The Jets have the 2nd best run team in the league giving up the least amount of rushing TD's in the league at 2. They're currently holding RB's to 3.9 per carry.  The only give only 88.1 yards per game on the ground and only 793 on the season.  2nd behind only the Patriots for both of those stats. On the other side of the field?  Well, the Texans are much more vulnerable vs. the run.  1,061 yards and 7 TD's on the season.  They let up 4.3 per carry and 117.9 yards per game.  Finally, from a scoring perspective; the Jets are holding teams to 20.3 per game vs. the Texans 23.2.  The Jets should be able to shut down the run with relative ease as the Texans have been pathetic without Arian Foster.

How does all these super cool stats impact the offense?

What it tells me is the Jets need to bring their running game.  Unfortunately, the Jets running game hasnt traveled well with the only real impressive game on the ground was in London and not actually on another teams home field.  Hopefully, with a couple of extra days rest that Mangold will be 100% and the Jets can get Winters and Giacomini ready to handle JJ Watt because that is not a job that can be done by 1 man.  This also tells me that they cannot rely on Fitzpatrick to carry the offense.  As we've seen in recent weeks, it's too much to ask Fitzpatrick to carry this offense.  He's just not that type of QB.  This is the week the running game needs to come back to life because if the Jets want to have success vs. the Texans and neutralize the pass rushing ability of Watt (9.5) and Mercilus (5.5), they need to be able to run the ball well and get them into short yardage situations when trying to pick up first downs.

Breaking down the Houston's offense vs. the Jets defense isnt as easy.  With Brian Hoyer going through the concussion protocol, the Jets arent sure who they're preparing for on Sunday...him or TJ Yates.  I'll keep this simple.  If the Jets get TJ Yates and fail to have one of their best defensive performances of the year, I think it's safe to say that the season is all but over and we can remove all "defensive genius" tags from Todd Bowles.  There is no way with the type of talent that Bowles has at his disposal that you can let TJ Yates lead a team to victory.

If the Jets get Hoyer, the secondary will have their hands full.  Hopkins is emerging as a top 5 WR in the league and Nate Washington is a deep threat specialist. Not to mention, Cecil Shorts is a solid 3rd option.  If the Jets heavily rely on the blitz for pressure, they better get home because these guys can make you pay.  The Texans have given up 20 sacks on the year, so they can get there but they better be disciplined on the back end when they do.  Hopefully Calvin Pryor is ready to go.  The Texans protect the ball well too, not giving up a ton of INT's. They've thrown 8 on the season but 4 game from a guy no longer on the team.

This will be a game won in the trenches if you ask me.  Whoever can wins the battle at the LOS, will come away victorious.  The Jets need to set the tone on offense and open some lanes for Chris Ivory and the running game.  They need to neutralize the game changing/best defender in the league in Watt and pay attention to the guy on the other side, Mercilus.  Revis needs to show up and shut Hopkins down.  Whoever gets Washington, needs to make sure they dont let him get behind them.  The Jets defense, needs to make Houston one dimensional which should be easy to do but they cannot give their QB all day long to let their dangerous WR's get open down field.

Must win game for the Jets!

As often as must win is mentioned this one is.  Jets lose this game no way they are making the playoffs, I don't care what the math says.

I'll be very disappointed if the jets do not totally shut down the texans.  Our offense should only have to score 13-17 to win this game.  (Unless of course we decide to hand the Texans lots of turnovers.)

Agreed.  You cant lose 4 of 5 games, down the stretch during a playoff run with one of those teams being the Houston Texans.  I think Hoyer makes them a harder to defend because he's actually been playing well, so I dont want to say we should shut them down, though I think they still should that's not giving that offense enough credit.

If TJ Yates has to play and they let him get off...oh boy...we might see planes with banners flying over the practice field next week.

Hoyer is not very good, not always horrible but not good, If we take away Hopkins there should be no way they do much of anything.  Time for this defense to be what it is supposed to be.

Texans have no run game and Yates is good ONLY against Cincy, so I am rooting for him to start, Hoyer is just a guy at QB and doesn't scare me as much as our HC decisions. Bowles has yet to show he knows how to manage a close game, so I hope the Jets get an early lead. The longer the game goes on with the score close, the more I fear Bowles making a bad decision.

I'll keep this simple.  If the Jets get TJ Yates and fail to have one of their best defensive performances of the year, I think it's safe to say that the season is all but over and Todd Bowles should be murdered in front of his weeping family.

What's wrong with you man? That's a totally inappropriate thing to say. I wouldn't wish that on Kotite, or any other Jets coach former or current. Excessive to the max.

He's been pretty solid this year.  13 TD to 4 INT.  I'd take that type of production.

Eh.  The 2012 Ravens lost 4 of 5 to end the season, including a loss to the 8-8 Steelers.  The 2011 Giants lost 4 straight and 5 of 6 going into the Jets game, including losses to the 5-11 Skins and 8-8 Eagles.  The 2010 Packers lost 3 out 4 twice including losses to the 6-10 Lions and 'skins and 7-9 Dolphins.

Ravens - Joe Flacco - Super Bowl winning QB

Giants - Eli Manning - 2 times Super Bowl winning QB

Packers - Aaron Rodgers - Super Bowl winning QB, best QB in the NFL

Jets - Ryan Fitzpatrick has never won more than 6 games.

Well played, sir.   I was being snarky but I dont think its comparable really.  Those teams were good.  Not sh*tty like the Jets.  Obviously they had better QB's but the year before their SB run, everyone of those teams won 10+ games and had consistency at the QB position with a franchise guy.  Not 4 games the year before like the Jets with a journeyman QB starting his first year here who has never won more than 6 games in a season.

The big question is do I bench DeAndre Hopkins? I would have to be crazy, right?

One of Cecil Shorts/Nate Washington probably goes off on Cro, if he's back.

If Cro starts again, my leash with Bowles is going to get very tight.  Which should make him worried because I'm cool.

This sounds excessive.

Agreed. There's no reason his family needs to be weeping at the time.

I love the fact that you pointed out that Eli is a big ******* doofus but you failed to mention that pre-Super Bowl Champion Joe Flacco was not yet Elite.

I have no idea what we are going to get from the Jets defensively.

Two weeks ago I would have bet the ranch that they would smack Jacksonville around silly. Didn't turn out that way.

Everything on this team is up and down. Good for periods, bad for others and in the case of the Oakalnd game REALLY, REALLY BAD.

Most games are won or lost on the LOS...the Jets have lost that battle the last couple of weeks (although I do believe they won it against Buffalo)

The NFL is very strange this year. A couple of weeks ago the Chiefs were dead and buried after losing Charles. They go out and win three in a row and they are right back in the hunt. The Texans are in it. Buffalo, Miami...all considered dead a few weeks ago, now back it in it.

The Jets need a good performance in all areas this weekend just to get out of this funk.

There are only 2 things you can count on with this Jets team; coming out flat and making some stupid game decisions.  Otherwise, you have no clue what team is coming out week to week.  Which I guess is another thing you can count on.

Washington seems to be more of a slot receiver. The Texans offense does not really concern me. Their defense concerns me.

I think they have Shorts playing the slot.  Washington is a deep threat that mostly lines up outside.  At least that's what it looked like on MNF.

Any offense concerns me the way the Jets D has been playing lately.  And a deep threat as effective as Washington especially concerns me if Bowles is serious about starting that POS Cro again.

Have you seen this guy on TV?  Pretty sure his family doesn't weep.  They just stare blankly.

Hopkins 13.8 per catch and Washington 15.8 per catch.

The last 2 times Washington faced the Jets, he went for over 100 yards receiving on the day.

1 Hopkins has I believe missed practices this week

2. Washington is 32 years old has played in 7 games so far this season and hasnt reached 500 yards yet. In his 10th NFL season he has surpassed 1000 yards receiving ONCE

3. Yates is the starting QB for the first time this season behind a questionable OL that just got Hoyer concussed and nearly gor Mallett killed earlier

Summary.

Revis will eliminate Hopkins and Skrine and/or Williams should be OK with Washington while Yates will be running for his life against Williams and Sons

1. Hopkins will play and is a tough cover for anyone.  I highly doubt he's out this Sunday.

2. Washington may be 32, but he can still get behind a defense as evidence, he average 15.8 per catch.   He's had multiple catches over 40 yards on the season. If Cro is active and Bowles actually plays him, expect him to go off.

3. Is it official that Yates is the starting QB?

I agree, the Jets should handle this team.  If its Yates, they better...but this isnt as easy at it sounds.  The Jets D has been terrible lately so, I'm not banking on some great performance.
