By Glenn Naughton   In an effort to boost his team’s pass rush off the edge against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, Jets Head Coach Todd Bowles turned to rookie linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin and  former Kansas City Chiefs 2013 7th round draft choice, Mike Catapano. Mauldin saw his most extensive action of the season as […]

great article.

it's great to see bowles / rodgers try different things to get the best 11 on the field for each situation.   as fans we always bitch when coaches to make changes to something that clearly isn't working.   mauldin and catapano certainly look like they've earned playing time, i hope they keep it up the rest of the year.

Mauldin is having success by sheer will and desire.  Gotta love players like that.  He may not be the most gifted pass rusher from the 2015 draft class, or even close to it, but he's consistently going to maximize his abilities.  That's all you can ask for if you're a coach or fan.

Mauldin had that nice highlight reel sack and a good day....Catapano didn't have a highlight reel play but had a great game!  He had a strong day coming off the edge against his former team mate left tackle Brandon Albert.  Catapano showed both power and speed against the former All Pro.  The tandem worked well together and the William's interception was a perfect example of the outside rush working.  Mauldin came flying off the edge and was at Tannehill's feet as he threw it while Catapano bullied Brandon Albert straight back into Tannehill forcing the quick release that turned into a pick off.

The first pass Smith caught, it looked like one of those I am not going to drop this one no matter what receptions. He caught it like someone had tossed him a wet fish.   He kind of enveloped the ball.  The second was a tough catch and he took it like a pro.  It is a mental hurdle, not a skill thing

We need these young guys this week. This Giant Oline is a clusterf*ck of bad & injured players. I love the idea of getting younger as the season progresses while other teams are struggling with injuries up front. That 1st game in Gillette the Pats got the usual cast of suspects for the most part all game, Pace, Davis, Harris, but the 2nd time around they'll get more speed from Mauldin, Reilly & Catapano plus a little more Henderson instead of Davis in the flat.

Jets lead the league with 17 sacks since Week 9.

Without a true edge rusher, the Jets struggled to find the quarterback early in the season despite sending pressure as much as any team in the league. Improved play from Muhammad Wilkerson, who has four sacks in as many games, and the development of rookie Lorenzo Mauldin has allowed New York to get more pressure over the last month despite blitzing at a much lower rate. With the secondary struggling, getting pressure without extra rushers would go a long way to solidify the defense.
