Dri Archer Signed

Can't dislike the move...he's the kind of guy who will catch on with a couple of teams and see if somebody can get him to maximize his skill set.  Hopefully it's with the Jets.

There's reasons for optimism:

Return game

Speed/Elusiveness in the Receiving game

Blocking

Not to many positives to this point for Archer when it comes to running the ball.  He's also had struggles in punt returning.  A lot of it has been poor decision-making for him.  He also likely won't be used much here as a receiver because of his size.  But the kid has talent.  Find ways to get him in the open field and there really aren't too many NFL players who can catch up to him.

Dri Archer passes on 10 practice-squad offers

Dri ArcherAP

Last week, the Steelers released running back Dri Archer to create a roster spot for receiver Jacoby Jones. Unclaimed on waivers, Archer became a free agent.

To date, Archer hasn’t signed with another team. However, he has had multiple opportunities to join NFL practice squads.

Per a league source, Archer has passed on 10 offers to join practice squads, including an offer from the Steelers. Archer, a third-round pick in 2014, instead plans to wait and see whether any opportunities arise to join a 53-man roster.

Of course, he could do both, signing on a practice squad and then joining any active roster. For now, he hopes to see whether any of the tailback-needy teams decide to give him a chance to show off his 4.26 speed.

The team with the most immediate need is the Patriots, who have lost versatile running back Dion Lewis for the season with a torn ACL.

Jets sign Dri Archer

JACKSONVILLE, FL - AUGUST 14: Dri Archer #13 of the Pittsburgh Steelers is unable to catch a pass in front of LaRoy Reynolds #52 of the Jacksonville Jaguars during a preseason game at EverBank Field on August 14, 2015 in Jacksonville, Florida. (Photo by Stacy Revere/Getty Images)Getty Images

Dri Archer got a lot of notice at the scouting combine in 2014 when he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.26 seconds, which was the fastest of the year and the second-fastest in combine history behind Chris Johnson.

That helped Archer become a third-round pick of the Steelers, but he hasn’t able to make that speed translate into a role on offense in the NFL. He had 10 carries for 40 yards and seven catches for 23 yards as a rookie and didn’t have any offensive touches in eight games before being released in November.

Archer will get a second chance to make it work with the Jets. The team announced they signed Archer, who worked out for them in November, to a futures contract on Wednesday. Jets running backs Chris IvoryBilal Powell and Stevan Ridley are all headed for free agency, so it’s unclear what the depth chart will look like at the position when the team starts offseason work.

Archer also returned kickoffs for the Steelers, posting an average of 22.4 yards per return over his two years in Pittsburgh. Antonio Cromartie had the most returns for the Jets in 2015, but is a candidate to be released as the Jets get their cap

Basically he can do what Kerley did, but even better, for less money.  Kerley is a goner, decent player but he just doesn't fit in Gailey's vision for the offense.

Wouldn't be surprised if Gailey gave him a receiving RB role too, he could maybe do the things Bilal Powell did in the receiving game.

Has he ever returned punts? That's all Kerley did this year.

I remember Archer returning KO's, just can't remember any punts

Sideline Santana has done alright in Washington

Hope Dri has a similar career with the Jets

Love this move, Bowles wants speed, Macc is on the job

I like the upgrade in the return game a lot, but he isn't going to do much as a WR according to what the steelers fans said

This was a kid I wanted pretty badly coming out of the draft.  He hasn't panned out so far, and usually its a bad sign when the Steelers let you go, but beggars can't be choosers when it comes to our KR/PR weaknesses.  I like the pickup.

Yup, if we can roster Kerley for an entire season to basically return punts and catch a handful of balls I am sure Dri can do a far better job. I also think a guy like Chan Gailey will find a way to get him the ball in space a couple of times for big plays.
