Bart Scott rips Jets for use of CB Darrelle Revis

Before Cam Newton, Darrelle Revis was the NFL’s Super Man. Well, if nothing else, he held the role on the Jets defense.

No quarterback in the league dared test Revis’ side of the field back in 2009. The cornerback was as lock-down as lock-down cornerbacks come. The re-incarnation of Deion Sanders. Heck, that one year may have been better than any Sanders ever had.

Revis allowed just a 37 percent catch percentage, two touchdowns, intercepted eight passes himself and a QB’s rating when throwing his way was a measly 29.1.

This season, the Jets seemed to think it was 2009. And that didn’t make ex-linebacker Bart Scott very happy.

“It’s one thing to leave a guy on an island,” Scott told Newsday at the Super Bowl. “But they didn’t even leave him on an island — they left him in orbit.”

While Revis was far from bad this season, he struggled a bit more than usual. The seven-time Pro Bowler continued to lock down the above average to good receivers, but couldn’t handle those top-notch wideouts. The Jaguars Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns, the Houston Texans DeAndre Hopkins, and the Bills Sammy Watkins all had success against Revis. Watkins, specifically, in the Jets playoff-eliminating Week 17 loss.

In the season finale, Watkins, matched up primarily against Revis the majority of the day, finished with 11 receptions for 136 yards.

“Nobody is undefeated when it comes to Father Time. But I think the Jets were too predictable,” Scott told Newsday. “Everybody knew that he was going to be on an island. Everybody needs helps sometimes, everybody needs just safety presence sometimes.”

Scott did offer his opinion to Newsday on how he felt the Jets could help Revis. Whether it comes in the draft, or free agency, the linebacker said the team has to add a pass rusher.

“They really don’t have a natural pass rusher,” Scott said

Why do people still think QBs didn't throw at Revis in 2009? Oh yeah, because they're blind guessing about something of which they have no actual knowledge.

As I recall, Revis was just about the most targeted CB in the league in 2009. I don't know what the totals were, but QBs threw at him all the time, mostly because he was shadowing their best (and sometimes only decent) receiver.

It was actually Rex's designed scheme to make QB'S throw Revis way, every overload Blitz was designed to make the QB move away from Blitz, and Revis would have single coverage on that side, while any other options the QB could throw to had multiple coverage schemes like brackets, or double teams.  Ryan knew what he had in 09 Revis, and used it to perfection up until the last 2 minutes of the AFCCG when Manning started eating up those Blitzes, and audibles to pick up the overload so he could thow it at the Jets other CB's.

Can someone still answer the q as to why Revis was playing like 15 yds. off Watkins the entire game?? Had Bowles lost that much confidence in him??

as far as Scott's comments go, every CB can use safety help over the top. The problem last season was that Cro needed it a lot more than Revis

Well Manning had two other options. The scheme worked better when a QB had only 2 choices. Also worked better before Lito Sheppard melted and Strickland got hurt.

But that wasn't the only reason Revis was targeted a lot. Teams often couldn't run on us (not with consistency throughout a game, anyway). As I recall, Sheppard was also one of the most targeted CBs in the league that year. It wasn't just doubling up Lito's guy and therefore teams threw mostly at Revis. Not at all. Nor was every pass Revis's way because of everyone else being doubled up. He was also covering the best and most reliable target. He was really great.

But regardless, my objection was to the dopey claim that no one threw at Revis in 2009.

Revis didn't want to get beat deep .  He's mad at Bowles because he feels he didn't get enough help in the form of double coverage zone etc.

If you think you're the best and deserve $17 mil per season base salary you should be able to at least contain Watkins.

It's a lot better than how he was used in Tampa.  He definitely needed help shadowing the dynamic WR's this year as he ages, but he IS getting paid a lot of money to be the CB1.  And to his credit, against guys not named DeAndre Hopkins and Sammy Watkins he did have a very good season.  But it's not like we could depend on Cromartie covering anyone.  The pass rush was the bigger concern.

I don't have FOA 2010 handy but it was over a hundred. It's obviously bad writing but you can't fault the guy that much. People who enjoy silly cliches comprise a much bigger portion of his audience than people who know the difference.

Yes but how do you contain Watkins when you give him a 10-15 yd cushion every play? It's one of the main reasons the Jets D couldn't get the Bills off the field, especially in the 2Q

Agree with the point about Cro and how we really need a #2 CB to step up next year.  Revis is still good but can't be left on an island and will need help from time to time which means we need a more reliable #2 CB.  Can Marcus Williams be that guy?  Can Milliner or Mcdougle step up?   With our salary cap situation I don't think we're gonna have a choice as it's going to be tough to justify keeping Cro around at his cap number.

Doesn't matter if you have four Darrelle Revises, if a QB with half decent accuracy has all day he'll eventually connect with someone.

Still, Jets lost at Buffalo because the no-show offense couldn't stay on the field. Four straight punts, two unfinished drives at BUF 22 and BUF 23 (Fizz 0-5 passing after Ivory's 58-yard blast and Revis' fumble recovery), three straight INTs; one in the BUF redzone.

That's eight blown chances to overcome 5 lousy points to win and clinch a WC.
