It's really not, hence not moving him despite the light, at best, rumors. They're probably not going to end up taking a $30 million cap hit either, mostly because they won't be better off taking the hit and then being QB-less.

They're already on the hook for 17.  Your mistake is that you just think you can snap your fingers and make the cap number go away.

Well, this is good news as far I am concerned, but the Jets financial situation is no walk in the park either. They won't be going on any more shopping sprees any time soon. Mac will still sign some free agents, but they will be  lower tier, lesser known role players. He needs to hit another home run in the draft for this team to really start to look like a contender. Right now, they are barely past frauds. Beating one team with a winning record in a season does not constitute a contender.

Yeah, $17 million isn't anything for a long proven franchise QB, it's closer to a coup. Your mistake is that you actually think/believe that NFL contracts are straight up and this is an unprecedented situation. Teams restructure deals every offseason for cap space, this is no different.

No, it's near the top of what it costs and worse it's a little more than half of what he's getting.

No, you're the one who thinks that you can magically make his cap number go away.  They can't restructure the 17.  If they restructure the remaining 13 it turns to what?  4, 5, 6 this year?  That's still over 20 and drags it out.  For a team that needs help all over.

Youre completely missing the point.

$20m+ is still fine for a QB like Brees too, 20+ teams in the league would love to have that kind of "problem." QB is, far and away, the most important position in this league. Teams spend years, some even decades, hoping to land one. The Saints have one of the tippy top tier best ones out there, they'll keep it that way, and work with it.

No, 20 mil is not fine.  Thats top of the charts for a QB.  One thing to pay that for Rodgers another for a QB with 2 or maybe 3 years left on a team that needs 3 years to get good and needs help at so many positions.  Makes no difference how good your QB is if you cant field a team around him.  Youre just fixated with what he is today, I know what he is.  I also know what the Saints are, its not good.

Yes, yes actually it is. Yes, yes it does make a difference how good your QB is. The Saints are not a mediocre team because they have Drew Brees or because they pay Drew Brees.

Oh yeah, how good were the saints with Brees last year?  They sucked.  With him.  And 20 mil means he makes more that just about every QB who is better than him.  Most by a wide margin.  So no, its not good.  Youre wrapped up in how good a player he is, not what he brings to the Saints W/L totals, how much time he has left as a top QB and what they would be able to do with the money.  You refuse to even consider it.  Fine, we agree to disagree.

Yeah, still no....At 20 million the only QB on his level making less money is Brady, who volunteered for it and signed his deal long before anyone else. Again, the Saints don't suck because they have one of the best QBs in the league. In fact, they're closer to being good again becusse they have a QB like Brees. I'm not considering it because it doesn't make sense, he hits the open market and he gets $20 million easy, but the Saints would be nuts to let that happen. That they inevitably have to find another QB doesn't mean they should let one of the best in the league go immediately.

Question about the Saints ... which is more egregious, Brees at $30m cap hit or Byrd at $10.9m?

Neither player will actually end up having those cap hits, so I'm going with their whole 2014 draft minus Cooks. The 2015 draft was off to a slow start too. The only starters they've drafted in their past two drafts are Cooks and Anthony, their 2015 first basically got redshirted playing a utility backup role.

You keep saying 20, his number is 30.  You're off by 50%

7-9 isnt closer to being good.

Actually, you kept saying 20, I was just rolling with you. Now that its convenient, we're back to the $30m cap hit that wont actually happen.

That's dramatic and all, but you know what would make them truly terrible with no end in sight? Dumping one of the handful best passers in the league.
