Jets got 3 first round "talents"

Lee is the player everyone wanted except they have forgotten it. We suck at covering TEs, RBs and making plays in space within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage. Guy can cover, rush the passer and cover lots of ground in a hurry. Maybe the most well rounded lb available this year.

Hackenberg is a HUGE question mark. But his "talent" is not arguable. Sky is the limit, etc.

Jenkins was the Georgia LB in the first round before his "pass rushing specialist" teammate shot up boards. I'm really happy he fell into our laps.

Discuss.

I don't love the Hack but He is young with huge upside. They all are. That seems to be the philosophy. If we hit on a few of them we'll be set. I like swinging for the fences better than the alternative.

Lol, gotta love Draft Day homer optimism.

hackensackme, lol. his o-line was ******* horrible. no one would have done well with what he had to work with there. yet he stayed instead of leaving (when he rightfully should have). dude has tons of talent

Um, no one is looking back in hindsight and making excuses for Hackenberg.  That offensive line was THE problem and everyone knew it.

Penn State cannot run the ball.

It cannot protect its quarterback.

And it all starts up front where there are four first-year starters on the line — tackle Andrew Nelson, center Angelo Mangiro and guards Brendan Mahon and Brian Gaia.

Franklin and O-line coach Herb Hand have leaned on six offensive linemen, with veteran Donvan Smith starting at left tackle and Derek Dowrey being used as a backup guard.

Senior guard Miles Dieffenbach, a two-year starter, has yet to play this season after tearing an ACL during spring drills. He's expected to return and his absence has been significant through six games.

The Lions have just one scholarship tackle in their senior, junior and sophomore classes, something Franklin alluded to earlier in the season.

Hack was considered 1st round talent after his freshman year, he fired his coach and OC, bought in some new guys and didn't work out,

hopefully he learned something, Mac decided to give the kid a fresh start, can reach Smith on bombs unlike Mr. Playoffs.

This guy came to Penn State in the wake of the 'death penalty' levied on the Lions. Then his HC leaves after his freshman year for the pros. The kind has to be some kind of tough to go through what he has. Limited in scholarships and yet Hack won more games than he lost every year. Mentally tough, great arm talent. Just has to get up to speed with Chan Gailey. Will be the starter year two.

I seriously do NOT get it why so many are willing to stroke Mac for the Darron Lee pick. Do you guys even remember when you sold out? This is 100% garbage as far as I am concerned. Does Eric Mangini, the 3-4 defense, and Jonathan Vilma at all ring a bell with any of you? Darron Lee IS Vilma, like looking in a f*cking mirror. Lee is a prototypical 4-3 linebacker he is custom fit for that formation. In a 3-4? He'll get enveloped in blocks. I doubt he'll be able to get off blocks and make plays. There were MANY better players to take at 20. IMO, This is Mac's WORST pick since he got hired here and possibly the first of many....

Dude you cannot compare our D-line now, which is easily top 5 even after losing Snacks, to the crappy defensive line we had in 2006 with D-Slob, Von Old Hoffen and trash.

Vilma had no protection as a ILB.  Not to mention look at Mark Barron with the rams.  Guy was a bust as a safety, switches to lb at the same weight and plays great.  Lee is going to be that type of player

The NFL is a much different game than in 2004. Lbers with speed are the current norm as opposed to the thumpers of previous years. Look at guys like Kuechly, Bobby Wagner , Jamie Collins they are all smaller faster Lbers.  But don't worry maybe we'll draft a QB who will run the triple wing.

Well good thing that we have a coach that has said, about a million times, that he designs his base defense around the players.  Nevermind the fact that Lee is more Deone Buccanon/Bobby Wagner than he is Jonathan Vilma.

Mangini's 2 gap read and react defense has very little in common with Bowles' defense.

So you think that because our DL is better that they'll protect the little twerp Lee from getting beat up big old meanies?! WTF are talking about? This is not a game about retaliating against playground bullies. I think I've officially reached the twilight zone. Maybe if the DL protects Lee enough, maybe the DL can get some from Lee?! This is just totally f*cking weird.

Football is about MEN. It's about controlled aggression. If pocket Lee can't shed blocks (which he will INEVIDABLY have to do) then he should play pussy soccer. Either way, Mac still screwed the pooch.

Jenkins may end up a steal, but first round talent LBs are generally much faster.   I understand not being in love with the Lee pick OMG workout warrior underclassman from Ohio State), but size shouldn't be that big a deal.  This isn't the same 3-4.  I have been waiting for them to draft a tweener speed guy.  He will probably be doing what we all hoped Antonio Allen was going to do.  The way Bucannon was gong to be used in Arizona.

NO. Not when the player drafted has IDENTICAL size and physical attributes as Vilma. Like I said, Lee and Vilma might as well be looking in a f*cking mirror. It's garbage as far as I am concerned. I'll believe this shrimp can do something for this defense only when I see it. But honestly, right now I think we're looking at a BUST.

Why do you think the Rams gave Mark Barron a $40 million extension?

the Lb position has changed

This is a great post how Lee's skills fit into the 3-4 versus a 4-3 defense.

That is like fitting a square peg in a round hole.

If the Jets don't move to a 4-3, Lee will get eaten alive. The Vilma situation is a perfect example.

Weird, I thought the NFL was about winning.

Huh. Turns out it's about men.
