CLAYTON : teams to regress.. we're #4 ~ ~ ~

Offseasons can be tricky for the NFL's top teams.

Playoff teams draft in the final 12 picks of each round, making it hard to replace aging stars or find elite, young players. Because of four-year rookie contracts and the inability to open extension talks until the final year before free agency, the chances of keeping successful draft choices between Rounds 2 and 7 aren't great, particularly with the salary cap going up more than $10 million per year. If a team is loaded with great talent, cap problems hit, forcing general managers to pick and choose which players to keep.

Several teams improved during the offseason, but others regressed. Here are the five teams that took a few steps backward this offseason, starting with the defending Super Bowl champions and continuing in order  :

4. New York Jets

The Jets went against the odds last year and had great success. They totally rebuilt the secondary by hitting free agency hard. General manager Mike Maccagnan traded for gold, getting Brandon Marshall and Ryan Fitzpatrick in trades. Normally, big free-agent spending sprees don't work out. For the Jets, the plan worked. They won 10 games and almost made the playoffs. An easy schedule helped, but Maccagnan's checkbook made it easy for Todd Bowles to have a successful start as a head coach.

But every spending spree creates bills, and the Jets paid for it in 2016. Cap dollars were tight. They are offering around only $8 million a year for Fitzpatrick, who's now an unhappy free agent. Cornerback Antonio Cromartie was cut. Damon Harrison left in free agency. The Jets are currently down six starters who each played at least 499 snaps last season.

Change was needed, though. They finished the season with 11 starters in their 30s, and improved speed was needed on defense. The tight cap gave Maccagnan limited ability to upgrade the roster. Except for left tackle Ryan Clady, no Jets acquisition cost more than $3.5 million per year.

Nothing more than another article showing anti-Jets bias by the media.

Fitz, Ivory, Harrison, Pace, Cromartie, and Brick. There's a reason why they left those  "Starters" names out of the article.

Which of those do you think they'll miss the most?

Not sure I agree.  We did have literally the easiest SOS last year (tied w/ Carolina).  Finishing 10-6 means we should (in theory) have a tougher SOS this year.  On top of that, we don't have a real starting QB at the moment.  So I think there's genuine reason to think the Jets will regress.  Obviously I hope the Jets surprise to the upside but I'm keeping my expectations low.  OTOH, if we surprise to the upside w/ a "bridge QB" then it's almost like fool's gold.  I'd rather have Hackenberg show real promise to be a legit franchise QB but finish 5-11 next year.  We all know it's a QB league (generally speaking).  And w/ the Jet D to pair with a franchise QB, that would be the makings of a serious championship foundation.

Good point - the Fitz option may still work itself out ... That would leave us with 5.

Ivory for Forte is an upgrade

Harrison loss is a downgrade

swapping out Pace is a roll of the dice

Cro out is likely an upgrade

brick for Clady will depend on health

at worst an even swap

also we've heard rumors the Fitz # is around 8 ... But don't believe Clayton actually knows that for sure either

My post was a dig at those Jets fans who think the media has an anti-Jets bias, regardless how accurate the article is.

I think the above article is very accurate.

Forte for Ivory is a up grade as long as you don't use last years stats(He missed 3 games with a sprained MCL) and hope that Forte at 30(31 in Dec) still has gas left in the tank..

TexMex has demeaned every one of those players, and I was looking to see if he would address that.

Fitz may still be signed, but Tex doesn't think he's any good anyway.

I like Ivory, but he's no workhorse. Forte will be a huge upgrade in the passing game receiving, and blocking.

Harrison is immovable, but only a 2 down player. McLendon is a very good run stuffer in his own right with more rush skills. I think we're fine there.

Pace is nothing more than reliable, and still available if no one works out.

Cro was absolutely horrid last year.

Brick was bad, and getting worse every year. Clady is a huge upgrade, and due to stay healthy. He wasn't injury prone before these last couple years freak injuries, and two years removed from the Lisfranc.  It's a good gamble.

I'd say he has at least as much gas left as Ivory does. He's not the type of back that gets hit hard a lot.

Ivory runs out of gas half way through each game.

None of them.  Pace will be back at vet minimum if need be.  Cro had a terrible year so can't see how you can regress there.  We upgraded from Ivory with Forte and Robinson.  Brick had a terrible year and Clady is better then him but everyone seems hung up on how many consecutive games each player has played.  Personally I think Clady will play every game this year so upgrade there.  Harrison is the only player we will miss but I don't see us really missing him much as we got a good NT to replace him and our line is elite.  Fitz is the elephant in the room but personally even if he doesn't come back and we roll with Geno (and I'm one of the biggest Geno haters) I think the performance won't take a huge hit with Gailey at the helm.  I actually want to go with Geno this year and if he performs even average we will get a decent compensatory pick next year when he leaves.

I love the offseason when the media predicts the Jets to be crap because it usually turns out to be the opposite once the reg season rolls around.

How can the Browns honestly regress???  I know they lost a lot of players in FA but c'mon its the Browns sure maybe they can regress from 2nd worst to worst in the NFL? LOL  These articles are so silly but entertaining on slow news days.

This is why Robinson is the actual upgrade to Ivory's skillset.  We just upgraded the entire position by getting Forte and re-signing Powell.

The pre-emptive whining and excuse making is laughable.

We're a better team now than when the final whistle blew vs. Buffalo, in multiple potions.

The only Q is at QB, where most Jets Fans think Geno > Fitz.

So just stop with this tripe already.  If we take a "step back", it's because one or multiple someones failed, big time, to meet reasonable expectations in 2016.

Brick> Clady = huge upgrade (Jets got lucky!)

Ivory + Ridley + hurt Powell > Forte + Robinson (younger Ivory type) + healthy Powell = huge upgrade

Pace > Anybody = huge upgrade

Harrison > new guy from Chicago = slight downgrade but our Dline superiority cancels it out

Cromarty > Marcus = upgrade in youth & ball skills

Fitz> Fitz or Geno ? I actually think Fitz comes back but other than protecting the ball, Geno could make the offense more potent

Breno > Somebody else =  Huge upgrade (I'd be shocked if Breno is out starting RT.)

Defensive speed 2015 > Defensive speed 2016 =  huge upgrade

Tightends 2015 > Tightends 2016 (Amaro & Sudfeld) = upgrade

Quigley > The Aussies = huge upgrade whichever one wins in camp

Special teams speed 2015 > Special teams speed 2016 = huge upgrade

Kerley > Peake & Harrison = upgrade (Size & speed and Special teams upgrade)

Geno Smith is making very little coin. If our Coach & GM thought for one moment that Geno Smith is bad for team chemistry or that he had no talent to work with he would have been cut for a Brian Hoyer type already. F*cking sick of the freaking whining around here regarding Geno Smith. According to Bowles, Geno has been studious & working extremely hard since he got his jaw crushed by the Neanderthal. Maybe, just maybe, he got the time he needed to step back, take a breath (sit & learn like he should of in 2009) and comes out stronger in his next camp. Matt Ryan would have looked like sh*t throwing to the likes of Stephen Hill, Clyde Gates, David Nelson, Jeff Cumberland ect., sh*t, Matt Ryan imploded when Jones went down, White aged before our eyes & Gonzales retired! Give the guy one chance with superior players & a more simplified offense like Gailey runs & let's see what happens. I've never seen more fans scared of being proved wrong.

It's the same team, a year older, with a harder schedule and we've gotten worse at the QB position. Maybe the Jets surprise people, who knows, but there's really not much to be excited about on paper with this team. We're in a QB-driven league and Geno Smith is our starter a year after we choked away a playoff spot to Rex Ryan.

Give Geno Marshall, Decker, Amaro and Forte, and he will produce significantly better than Fitz.

Geno has an upside, the only thing Fitz has is a downside.

The hatred for Geno Smith on this message board is hilarious.

Geno should be the Jets starting QB for 2016.

Sure, he will have his share of bonehead plays, but he will absolutely deliver far more big plays than a noodle-armed, 33-year old below average QB.

Big plays win football games.

If you saw only Ken O'Brien vs. Dolphin career highlights or Steve Grogan vs. Jets career highlights you would think they were HOF QBs.
