jetrider
Quote Joe Namath: Geno Smith will be Jets' starting quarterback Tue Jun. 14, 2016 by SI Wire New York Jets legend Joe Namath believes Geno Smith will be the team’s starting quarterback this season. Speaking at an event honoring vice president Joe Biden, Namath said Smith will be the Jets’ starter even if Ryan Fitzpatrick returns. “I think Geno’s going to be the starting quarterback no matter if Fitzpatrick comes back or not,” Namath said, via Newsday. Fitzpatrick led the Jets to a surprising 10–6 season in 2015. The journeyman quarterback enjoyed a career year, posting career highs in passing yards and touchdowns. However, Fitzpatrick and the Jets have been embroiled in a contract dispute since the end of the season, with the free-agent quarterback seeking more money. “We talk about Fitzpatrick not signing a contract with the Jets,” Namath said. “Well, you got to figure as smart as he is, he just doesn’t recognize that it’s important to play with a good team. Last year was the first time he played with a good team in his career, and he excelled.” Smith was supposed to be the Jets’ opening day starter last year, but was injured at the start of the season after being punched in the face by a teammate. Fitzpatrick remained the starter after leading New York to a 4–1 start. In 31 career games, Smith has completed 57.9% of his passes, with 27 touchdowns, 35 interceptions and seven fumbles. What a mistake that was - keeping Fitz the starter - to waste a playoff-ready team and easy schedule on a playoff-whiffing choke artist.

Still, until Geno starts doing this in games where pass rushers are lining up on Breno, he also stinks. Good to see him doing so well in practice, and it would be great if that carried over to real games, but I'm holding off on such optimism until that happens. Pall this stuff is just preseason, but it would be funny if that pass came with Revis on Owusu after he just publicly put Fitz on his wish list. Probably not, or the bigger story on the play would be the tweaked hammy that instantly came up after Revis got beat deep.
jetrider
New York Jets' bonehead timeout wipes out game-tying touchdown Only the Jets. The eternally hopeless AFC outfit from New York had just scored one of its biggest touchdowns in years, equalizing its game at Green Bay with a beautiful 37-yard touchdown pass from Geno Smith to Jeremy Kerley. The fourth-and-4 play came late in the fourth quarter and would have tied the score at 31. But as the officials in the end zone were signaling touchdown, the officials up the field were blowing the play dead. Unbeknownst to most of the players, coaches and viewing audience, Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg had been running down the sideline before Smith took the snap, furiously asking for the team’s final timeout. The timeout had been granted, but the noise at Lambeau Field drowned out the whistle that came before the snap. The touchdown was wiped out and the Jets went from a presumptive 31-31 tie to having to convert another fourth down. To their credit, the Jets converted the replayed down, but turned it over on downs four plays later. Green Bay ran out the clock to seal (and steal) a 31-24 win. After the game, the biggest question was whether Mornhinweg called the timeout or if Rex Ryan did. Though there was some initial confusion about who called the timeout, but Ryan said after the game that it didn’t come from him. This much was clear: Someone called a timeout and the idea belonged to Mornhinweg, the coach who once won the coin toss in sudden-death overtime and opted to kick off. He was motioning for a timeout with the play clock running down. (See above.) What’s unclear is whether Ryan called the timeout himself or if the official granted Mornhinweg’s request. Why should that matter: By rule, only a head coach can call a timeout from the sideline. But Fox’s officiating expert Mike Periera says while that’s the rule in spirit, it’s rarely applied in real-time. “We’ve never held to that, because when the snap is imminent you don’t have time to turn around to look and see who’s calling it,” he said on a Fox Sports web video. Periera also shared a great anecdote during his recap of the play. He remembered another instance when an assistant’s timeout negated a big play. In that case, the Baltimore Ravens stuffed a fourth-and-1 sneak from Tom Brady. But a timeout from the Baltimore sideline wiped out the play. Who called that timeout? Defensive coordinator Rex Ryan. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• What I never got was how Rex didn't know after the game who called timeout and why. Unless of course he was covering for Marty. And Moronweg didn't fess up and pull the Bilal Powell excuse out of his ass until the following morning. Most likely after staying up all night watching ESPN and NFLN, listening to others speculate about what might've happened. He was clearly seen on film calling timeout so he had to come clean. MM must've thought, "Yeah, that's the ticket! The alignment! Makes me look SMART like I know my stuff!" Cause if that was really the case why didn't he say it sooner and why couldn't Rex explain it? Seemed like a bogus excuse that didn't add up.
