kelly
Jets' Matt Forte has knee scope; Bilal Powell could see bigger role in '17 Matt Forte should be ready to go in time for the Jets' offseason program. AP Photo/Lynne Sladky 5:05 PM ET Rich CiminiESPN Staff Writer Facebook Twitter Facebook Messenger Pinterest Email print comment FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets running back Matt Forte, who played the entire season with a torn meniscus in his right knee, underwent arthroscopic surgery last Friday.Coach Todd Bowles said he didn't know the recovery time. For a scope, it can be anywhere from a few weeks to three months, depending on how it was repaired. Either way, Forte should be back in time for the offseason program, which begins in mid-April. Forte hurt his knee in the Week 14 win over the San Francisco 49ers. A few days later, he told ESPN.com that an MRI revealed a torn meniscus, and that he had been playing with it all year without discomfort. Bowles confirmed that to be the case. The Jets had concerns about Forte's knee when they signed him last offseason to a three-year, $12 million contract, yet they still guaranteed $9 million. Because of that, it's difficult to cut him. His $4 million salary is fully guaranteed. He will count $5 million on the 2017 cap if he's on the team, and it jumps to $6 million if they release him. In other words, he's not going anywhere. Forte, 31, rushed for a career-low 813 yards, averaging only 3.7 yards per carry. That makes two straight years under 900 yards. His injury created an opportunity for Bilal Powell, the Jets' best player over the final month of the season.Powell rushed for 411 yards over the final four games, behind only Le'Veon Bell (451) and Jordan Howard (430). Bowles said Powell's impressive stretch run could lead to a larger role next season. He finished with a career-high 722 yards. > http://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/66148/jets-matt-forte-has-knee-scope-bilal-powell-could-get-bigger-role-in-

kelly
Matt Forté Has Played Faster Than His Times Randy LangeSenior Reporter, newyorkjets.com@rlangejets After Good but Not Great Showing at '08 Combine, Jets RB Has Gone On to 9 Fine Pro Seasons The 2008 NFL Combine trained a bright light on a superb stable of running backs. Up top was Chris Johnson, who flew to his fabled 4.24-second 40-yard dash. Not far behind were Darren McFadden (4.33) and Jamaal Charles (4.38). Johnson and McFadden would be first-round picks in the 2008 draft, as would Jonathan Stewart, Felix Jones and Rashard Mendenhall. In fast company like that, it's easy to get overlooked. That no doubt happened to Matt Forté. Forté, who's always billed himself as "Work Horse," had an outstanding career at Tulane, rushing for 2,127 yards as a senior. But while he earned high marks for his versatility and open-field creativity, he didn't record burner times like his Combine classmates : ■ 4.46 seconds in the 40, seventh among backs. ■ 6.84 in the three-cone drill, fourth. ■ 4.23 in the 20-yard shuttle, sixth. VIEW GALLERY | 25 Photos Top Photos of Current Jets at the Combine He did come in first among the backs with an 11.49-second time in the 60 shuttle. The catch there, though, was that he was one of only two RBs to participate in the long shuttle that year. Forté's smaller-school background and Combine showing pushed him down into Round 2 of the draft, where he was selected by Chicago 44th overall. He spent his first eight seasons with the Bears and last year with the Jets. And since 2008, who has led the NFL with the most yards from scrimmage? Why, it's No. 22, Matthew Garrett Forté, with 13,794 yards, 1,700 more than runner-up Adrian Peterson. Not bad for an old Work Horse who came out of the gate running in the middle of the pack. > http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/article-randylangefb/Matt-Forté-Has-Played-Faster-Than-His-Times/5a152546-036f-4d0f-834f-ebff44bf1333

kelly
This is the second installment of our position-by-position breakdown for the New York Jets as we head to the April 27-29 draft: Position: Running back Current personnel: Matt Forte (signed through 2018), Bilal Powell (2018), Brandon Wilds (2017), Brandon Burks (2018), Romar Morris (2018), FB Julian Howsare (2018) and FB Chris Swain (2018). Key newcomers: None. Departures: Khiry Robinson. Projected starter: Powell/Forte. Overview: To say the Jets are set with Forte and Powell is just plain misguided. While they were an effective tandem last season, combining for 1,535 yards on the ground, it would be short-sighted to ignore the position. A Forte-Powell combo could get the Jets through the season, but their birth certificates suggest it's time to think about the future. Forte is 31, Powell 28. The Jets need fresh blood and fast legs. Their longest run from scrimmage last season was only 35 yards, which won't scare too many defenses. They need a young back who can serve as a No. 3 and transition into a bigger role in 2018, when Forte likely will be gone. They also should add a fullback to the program; the new offensive system will use the fullback more than the previous one. The last running back drafted: You have to go back to 2013, when they chose fullback Tommy Bohanon in the seventh round. The Jets haven't picked a running back in the first three rounds since Shonn Greene in 2009. Potential targets: This is one of the better classes in quite a number of years. It wouldn't be a surprise to see seven get drafted in the first three rounds, including three in round one -- Leonard Fournette (LSU), Dalvin Cook (Florida State) and Christian McCaffrey (Stanford). The Jets haven't done much with the Big Three in the way of private workouts and/or visits. If they're hot for Fournette, the top-rated back, they've done a good job of covering their tracks. Fournette is a north-south runner with breakaway speed, the type of back who needs the ball 20 times a game. He'll be a quarterback's best friend, and the Jets' quarterbacks need all the friends they can find. Because of their versatility, Cook and McCaffrey would be ideal fits in a West Coast-style offense, but it would be a reach to take one with the sixth pick. Donnel Pumphrey (San Diego State) and Marlon Mack (South Florida), projected as day-three selections, have drawn interest from the Jets. Need factor (based on a scale of 1 to 10): 6. > http://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/68179/jets-must-address-running-back-position-with-eye-on-future
kelly
This is the fifth in a series highlighting players who could be selected by the New York Jets with the sixth overall pick in the April 27 draft: Player: Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU Height/weight: 6-foot, 228 pounds Scouts, Inc. ranking: No. 5. Draft projection: Fourth to 12th. Scouting report: Fournette is one of the best running back prospects in years, a rare blend of power and speed (4.51 seconds in the 40). He probably was ready for the NFL after his freshman season, maybe sooner. He has the ability to run over linebackers or run away from them. As a kid, he trained by doing 1,500 push ups and 1,000 sit ups a day, resulting in a chiseled body by the time he was in high school. He's a north-south runner with elite acceleration if he has a runway. The knock on Fournette is that he's impatient, doesn't wait for holes to develop and doesn't see cutback lanes. He's an adequate receiver and a so-so blocker. Key stats: He finished his career with 3,830 rushing yards and 40 touchdowns -- in only 32 games. He averaged an obscene 6.2 yards per carry, including 6.8 yards against ranked teams not named Alabama. The Crimson Tide was his kryptonite, as he averaged only 48 yards per game in three meetings. Fournette played in one- and two-back sets, although his production was significantly better when there was another back in the game -- 6.36 yards per rush and 33 touchdowns with two backs, 5.1 yards and five with one back, per ESPN Stats & Information. The numbers were similar when the quarterback was under center (6.53, 36) as opposed to shotgun (5.27, four). Scouts say he's best in a traditional, power-running system. Some wonder if he'll be a scheme fit for the Jets, who likely will employ a West Coast offense. Red flags: There could be a minor durability concern for some teams. Fournette suffered a preseason ankle injury last August and it nagged him throughout the year, causing him to miss five games. He skipped LSU's bowl game because he didn't want to get injured and damage his draft stock, which may have rubbed some NFL evaluators the wrong way. He also raised eyebrows by showing up to the scouting combine at 240 pounds and posting a below-average vertical jump (28.5 inches), slightly below the threshold for predicting success in the NFL. He fumbled eight times in 657 touches, not a great ratio. In his own words: "(This journey) came fast. Not for a second in my mind I thought I'd be in the NFL, coming up from New Orleans, out of the 'hood, 7th Ward. It's a dream come true, a blessing." On whether the perception of running backs is changing: "Most definitely. With the running backs we've got in our class and next year's running backs, a lot is going to change. With this group, a lot of these players are going to succeed in the NFL and contribute as soon as they get there." Scouts' take: NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah: "This is a pretty special player. I wouldn't rule him out potentially being off the board before Jacksonville picked (at No. 4), either with San Francisco maybe surprising us a little bit (at No. 2), or if somebody tried to get up there ahead of them, ahead of Jacksonville. He's not going to go to an offensive line as good as Ezekiel Elliott's, but I think he has a chance to be a big-time player." ... AFC scout: "If there's a hole, he's dangerous. If not, he doesn't have enough wiggle to get out of trouble. He needs a good offensive line." > http://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/68189/leonard-fournette-could-be-jets-version-of-beast-mode-sans-skittles
kelly
The Jets turned to a trifecta at running back against the Raiders in Week 2, a formula that could be emulated for the foreseeable future.“Yeah, I think you saw we did a good job with the backs, all of them playing,” offensive coordinator John Morton told the media Thursday. “That’s the way we want to do things. Guys have specific plays, specific roles and that was another encouraging thing that we saw – Eli (McGuire) coming in and doing some good things, Matt (Forté) doing some good things and even (Bilal) Powell. If we can just keep that going and play by committee, that’s a good thing.”As a unit, the running backs averaged 4.5 yards on their 21 carries in The Black Hole. Forté led the charge with 53 yards on the ground and a 34-yard reception, followed by rookie Eli McGuire, who received his first regular season carries. The 2017 sixth-round pick gained 29 yards on his six attempts and reeled in a seven-yard pass. Powell, who averaged the NFL’s second-highest yards per carry last season with 5.5, had 13 yards on six rushes. “It was fun, man, but at the same time, I was a little nervous,” McGuire said. “I didn’t know what to expect in a real NFL game. The only thing I knew was that the speed of the game was a lot faster. My first carry was an outside zone and my mindset was to just get to the outside. It was fun to get that first carry, to get my feet wet with the starters.”Forté said he thought McGuire played well and liked that he protected the ball. The 10-year vet said he he’s never been a part of a three-back backfield, but believes it could provide him with an ability to stay healthier for longer.“It worked well,” Forté said of the committee approach. “We were all pretty productive. Obviously it wasn’t good enough because we didn’t win the game. He’s (Morton is) the OC and has the decision to make on what guys he wants in on specific plays and stuff like that. I felt pretty fresh during the game, so that’s an added positive. I know Bilal probably felt the same way, too.” > http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/article-7/Jets-Like-Their-RB-Trio/ca00fd4e-24cd-4798-ad86-2fc6861101ee

kelly
-- Todd Bowles subscribes to the hot-hand philosophy. Or, in this case, hot legs. When it comes to distributing the rock, the New York Jets coach prefers to stay in the moment and ride the most productive running back -- or so he says. With that in mind, it should be easy to figure out the rotation Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. Bowles should stick with Bilal Powell and rookie Elijah McGuire. If Matt Forte(turf toe) is healthy enough to play, he should be one of the guys, but not The Guy. Don't get me wrong, Forte still has value to the offense and he's an excellent presence in the locker room, but he doesn't have big-play ability. In 2,276 career carries, he's never had a run longer than 68 yards.Last Sunday, Powell went 75 yards for a touchdown on his first carry, McGuire went 69 yards for a score on his fourth.Let's not over-think this: The Jets (2-2) need to keep feeding Powell and McGuire.Bowles said the backfield plan remains a "work in progress," but he said Powell and McGuire will continue to get the ball. How much he didn't say. "We left some plays out there on the field," he said. "I know they got the two big runs, and we're running the ball, we're making progress every week. We just have to keep making progress and utilize the guys we have and try to take advantage of certain situations when we can."The three-headed monster looks good on paper, but it's hard to execute because certain runners need the ball to develop a rhythm. Clearly, Powell doesn't need much time to get his engine churning, although there was a fluky element to his touchdown run. The Jacksonville Jaguars, thinking he was down by contact, stopped their pursuit. The Jets turned to Powell and McGuire, who combined for 256 yards, because Forte was out with the injury. When Forte is playing, the coaches have a tendency to forget about Powell. That's directed mainly at the previous offensive staff, although new coordinator John Morton was guilty of that in the first 26 minutes of the opener. Former center Nick Mangold offered his take on the running-back situation, saying Powell has been "overlooked over the years." Mangold said he hasn't watched too much this season, but he left no doubt about his opinion."B.P. is the guy," Mangold said Tuesday on SNY TV's "Jets Stream" podcast. "That's the guy you want to roll with." When he found out that Forte was out last week, Mangold said he picked up Powell for his fantasy team. Smart move. > http://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/71812/time-for-jets-to-feature-bilal-powell-and-elijah-mcguire-in-backfield
