SALARY CAP dept. : which Jets could be gone after this season to create cap space ? ? ?

In the really wide view that any player move effects the salary cap? Uh, yeah, I guess. Rookie contracts, even expected future starting QBs have minimal effect on cap as contract values are slotted, and money comes from a seperate (but still under cap) rookie money allotment.

Today is rookie reporting day for the Jets and QB Sam Darnold still hasn't signed his rookie contract. Time to worry? Relax, the real deadline is Thursday, reporting day for the veterans. The first practice is Friday. The Jets have a recent history of signing their first-round picks just before the start of camp, so this is the norm. Rookie deals are slotted, but the issue of offsets sometimes is a sticking point for high picks.

Jets DE Leonard Williams just saw one of his fellow top-10 picks from the 2015 draft — Rams RB Todd Gurley — land a huge contract extension. Williams said he's not thinking, "What about me?" He said, "I think everybody's time will come. It's hard to compare." Williams is signed through 2019, just as Gurley was before his extension. One difference: Gurley is coming off a monster year, Williams not so much.

Darron Lee's four-game suspension for substance abuse could jeopardize his future with the Jets. He has one year left on his rookie deal. The Jets must decide by early May whether to exercise a fifth-year option for 2020. The worst part for Lee: His $1.8M salary in 2019 no longer is fully guaranteed. The suspension triggers default language in the contract. This means the Jets can easily cut him. Lee, the 20th pick in 2016, improved this season, but hasn't lived up to expectations.

CB Trumaine Johnson, a healthy scratch, admitted he overslept on Wednesday. A source told ESPN he missed practice and was late for meetings. Johnson said he was "upset" upon learning before the game that he'd be benched. He apologized to teammates. "Put that (loss) on me," he said. "I'll take it. I'll take the L." Because of cap ramifications, the Jets can't cut him until 2020.

Quincy Enunwa's recent contract extension with the Jets is $33.4 million over four years, including $10 million in fully guaranteed money. There's an easy escape for the Jets after the 2019 season. In reality, it's more like a two-year, $16 million deal. If Enunwa makes it to 2021, it'll be a three-year, $23.8 million deal. He can earn an additional $2.6 million in escalators in the third and fourth years. Bottom line: The Jets are paying him like a No. 2 wide receiver. Now he has to stay healthy and earn it.

Three Jets drafted in 2016 — LB Jordan Jenkins, RT Brandon Shell and CB Rashard Robinson (49ers) — are in line for raises in 2019 based on the NFL's proven performance escalator. Their pay increases to $2.02 million because they played in at least 35 percent of the offensive/defensive snaps over their first three seasons or, in Robinson's case, at least 35 percent in two of his first three seasons. They had been scheduled to make $720,000, the fourth-year minimum. Only players drafted in rounds 3 to 7 are eligible for the bump.

This one just keeps getting better and better.  Give up a 5th round pick for Robinson at the trade deadline.  While we are sitting 3-5 and going nowhere.  The guy plays 20 defensive snaps for us in 2017.  Then he gets suspended 4 games to start this season. After his suspension he plays 83 defensive snaps in 2018.  Less than 7.5%.  And he earns a raise from $480K to $2 mil.

Also the laughable todd bowles listed him as one of the  very biggest improvements performance wise and then the guy never played.
