Not Enough Sacks? Mo Wilk Points to Secondary Struggles

As if the 3-9 New York Jets didn’t have enough going wrong as they prepare to play out the four remaining games on their schedule, struggling defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson today offered an explanation as to why the team’s defensive line has produced just 13 sacks since picking up 7 on opening day.

One day after wide receiver Brandon Marshall credited the team with staying together through tough times and lauded head coach Todd Bowles for managing the roster during times of crisis, Wilkerson put the team’s struggling secondary under the microscope.

According to Connor Hughes of NJ advanced media, Wilkerson simply said “little tighter coverage and we get those sacks”….Oh boy.

On the one hand, Wilkerson isn’t wrong, but he’s not entirely right either.

Yes, the Jets secondary has been absolutely atrocious this season, but a quick look back at several big pass plays will show opposing quarterbacks sitting in the pocket for what seems like an eternity, unmolested and free to (eventually) find an open receiver, with Wilkerson giving minimal effort.

If Bowles is lucky, this will be the last of any finger-pointing during a season in which there’s plenty of blame to go around.  Be it the D-line, the secondary, the quarterback play, the coaching, the inability of the team’s linebacker’s to slow down opposing tight ends…just to name a few.

Bowles and company have enough to deal with on the field, and the last thing they need is internal friction off of it.

hmmm...i guess that why they make a distinction between sacks and coverage sacks.  maybe if wilk beat his man there would be more sacks.  same thing for sheldon.  and the thing is they were able to put pressure on brady in the first half but then disappeared in the second.  wilk is rapidly approaching hainsworth status.

Its about time someone undermines Todd Bowles and Kacy Rodgers publicly I've been saying it all year long why are the CB's playing 7-10 yards off the line of scrimmage.

Theres deep issues on this team look for more frustration to come out in the up coming weeks.

Had enough of Todd Bowles I have.

What would you say the market is for him if there even is any? Browns have any interest in a swap for him and J Thomas?

Can't deal him this soon because of the cap hit ($26 million).

A struggling secondary doesn't explain Mo getting pancaked all game. Real team leaders point the fingers at themselves first. Always. It's so disappointing to see when Mo had such a good attitude and play to go with it two seasons ago. Watching right now what Del Rio has done with this Raiders team. Jets have to hire a proven coach this time.

Actually until recently I was one of Mo's biggest fans.  Made a post a few weeks ago saying I thought he would have a bounce back year next year.  That the broken leg, plus not being in camp, really hampered him physically.  I still believe that.

Suddenly he is acting like a jerk.  What he said may be partially true, but he is still playing like crap.  All he should do is take ownership of his poor play.

The leaders on the defense this season were supposed to be Wilkerson, Revis, Sheldon and David Harris. The lack of leadership that the first 3 have shown (in different ways) is appalling and ridding ourselves of them (we can't get rid of Mo) will be addition by subtraction.

It's also disappointing to see Harris' Jets career end like this. He still plays hard game in and game out, always leads the team in tackles, and doesn't talk trash. He's a team leader by example and deserves better than to be surrounded by lazy, overpaid crybabies.

With Mo's contract, his poor play this season, I don't see anyone giving up any real assets for him.   Joe's 32 YO.  He's said he wants to stay in Cleveland.

At 32, new location he doesn't want to be,  He could hit that rapid downhill slide.

Best we can hope for is Mo comes into camp next year in much better shape, with his old attitude.  He's a local kid.  From what I read he is from a tight knit family.  Hopefully he is upset that his family is being subjected to all this negative response to him.  If he wants that to end, he shows up on the football field next season.

He was a fairly well liked player by the fans until this season.  Think most fans will embrace him again, if he keeps his mouth shut, and plays good ball

Jets definitely need to replace the secondary this offseason. At the very least they need to get an impact player or two back there.

I understand what your saying, BUT this team needs a rebuild.  The Jets are not going to be a winning team next year.  To much fat has to be cut.

Got to start thinking young players in the next two drafts.

Man I hope Macc is better then we see so far.

I think Mac has done good so far. We agree. Would rather get solid young guys in free agency than superstar big contacts. There are some very good young players - but I am not sure if they will be allowed to hit the open market.

Big Mo throwing the DB's under the Jet team bus. Typical Jets, but he's not way off either.

Have you watched mo play this year?

On Monday night it looked like he was dropping into pass coverage to avoid actually putting effort in.  Someone should show him the tape and ask if he's like to comment.

Joe put it perfectly on JN radio....said Mo looked like he was being used as a spy all day.  He was basically popping out of his stance, resting his hands on the O-lineman and dancing with him while he peeked in to the backfield.

Wait, between Revis calling it quits n Mo blaming the DBs, you want Sheldon gone for sure? Like the only defender that seems pissed off after games, you want him gone cuz he likes to smoke? Shaun Ellis liked to smoke.
