Jets announce Jeremy Bates as their new QBs coach & 2 Other Offensive Assts

Jets have hired two offensive assistants and a strength & conditioning assistant

The Jets continued to fill out their offensive staff, announcing the hirings of offensive assistant/assistant quarterbacks coach Mick Lombardi and offensive assistant Jason Vrable. The team also made an addition to their strength staff as Joe Giacobbe will serve as an assistant strength and conditioning coach to Justus Galac.

Lombardi spent the past four seasons on the 49ers staff and was an offensive quality control coach in 2016. He also held the positions of offensive assistant, defensive assistant and assistant to the head coach with San Francisco.

A student assistant coach at Fordham in 2009-10, Lombardi started his NFL career as a scout with the Patriots in 2011.

Vrable, who was the Bills offensive quality control coach from 2013-15, served as Buffalo’s assistant quarterbacks coach last season.

Most recently at St. Peter’s, Giacobbe designed and implemented year-round training programs for all of the school’s 19 Division I sports programs. From 2012-15, Giacobbe was the director of player performance for the Rutgers football program. He played center and nose tackle as a Scarlet Knights walk-on from 2002-06, helping RU win its first bowl game in program history as a player and contributing to the school's Big East title in 2012 as a coach.

Giacobbe is a fascial stretch therapist and a certified strength and conditioning specialist and registered strength and conditioning coach from the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Mick Lombardi is in his fourth season with the 49ers and his first as an offensive quality control coach. He returns to the offensive side of the ball after spending last season as a defensive assistant. He served as an offensive assistant in 2014 and an assistant to the head coach in 2013.

Prior to joining the 49ers, Lombardi served as both a scouting assistant and coaching assistant for the New England Patriots, where his duties included evaluating players, breaking down film for the offense, assisting all offensive coaches, running the scout team, and charting plays for the coaching staff.

Lombardi was hired as a training camp intern in the scouting department for the Patriots in 2011 before being promoted to a full-time post prior to the regular season.

Before his time in the NFL, Lombardi was a student assistant coach at Fordham University for the 2009 and 2010 seasons. In that role, he was responsible for film break down, scouting reports, and the scout team.

Lombardi graduated from Fordham University in the spring of 2011 with a degree in communications.

Michael Lombardi is an American football executive and media analyst. Until 2016 he was an assistant to the coaching staff of the New England Patriots and is a former analyst for the NFL Network and sportswriter at NFL.com. Lombardi also previously served as an NFL executive with the San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns, St. Louis Rams, Philadelphia Eagles, and Oakland Raiders.

2014 to 2016 - New England Patriots: Hired by Bill Belichick as an assistant to the coaching staff.

2013 to 2014 - Cleveland Browns: Hired as General Manager and VP of Player Personnel. On February 11, 2014 Lombardi was replaced by Ray Farmer.

1998 to 2007 – Oakland Raiders: Hired by owner Al Davis to become Senior Personnel Executive working closely with the owner on all football matters. Liaison with head coach and owner; responsible for pro and college player evaluations; and handled veteran contracts.

1998 – Philadelphia Eagles: Promoted to Director of Pro Personnel after serving as a consultant to team owner Jeffrey Lurie in 1997. Managed the professional personnel department and advised owner and chief financial officer on all player contracts and salary cap issues.

1996 – St. Louis Rams: Prepared advisory reports for ownership during head coach search.

1987 to 1996 – Cleveland Browns: Joined team as Pro Personnel Director in 1987. Promoted to Director of Player Personnel in 1992 where he worked under head coach Bill Belichick and was responsible for all college and pro personnel decisions; managed salary cap and player personnel issues; oversaw staff of 13 college and pro scouts; handled all player contracts and advised head coach on all football matters.

1984 to 1987 – San Francisco 49ers: Hired as a scout, reported to head coach Bill Walsh and assistant coaches in all matters of college scouting and supplied information for use during the NFL draft.

1981 to 1984 – University of Nevada, Las Vegas: Hired as Recruiting Coordinator by Runnin’ Rebels head coach Harvey Hyde.

1977 to 1981 – Hofstra University, Hempstead, N.Y.: Defensive lineman and long-snapper.

Jay Cutler signed a 7 year contract with the Chicago Bears worth $126.7 million on January 2, 2013. $38 million becomes fully guaranteed on the 3rd day of the 2014 League Year. Cutler’s 2016 salary is guaranteed for injury upon signing with $10 million becoming fully guaranteed on the 3rd day of the 2015 League Year and the remaining $6 million becoming fully guaramteed on the 3rd day of the 2016 League Year. Cutler’s contract contains roster bonuses from 2017 through 2020 that total $2.5 million. Each week that Cutler is active he will earn $156,250 of that roster bonus. If Cutler fails to attend offseason workouts his salary will be reduced by $500,000.

Offensive Coordinator Jeremy Bates was fired by the Seahawks by then head coach Pete Carroll on January 18, 2011. A difference in "philosophy" was stated as being the reason behind the move.

Two months later they drafted Russell Wilson.

Jason Vrable will enter his fourth year in the NFL and with the Bills in 2016 as he takes on a new role as the team’s assistant quarterbacks coach.

Vrable spent his first three seasons with the team as the team's offensive quality control coach. Vrable transitioned to working with QB coach David Lee in 2015 after spending 2014 working with the wide receivers and 2013 with the quarterbacks.

Vrable helped Bills QB Tyrod Taylor seamlessly transition during his first season as the Bills starting quarterback. Taylor, who became the first Buffalo quarterback to earn Pro Bowl honors since Drew Bledsoe in 2002, established a new franchise record for rushing yards by a Bills QB in a single season with 568 yards. In addition to providing a dynamic threat on the ground, Taylor made the Bills a viable threat through the air as his 99.4 passer rating is the second-best in team history behind only Jim Kelly in 1990.

In his time working with the wide receivers, Vrable helped lead Sammy Watkins to the best season by a rookie wide receiver in franchise history, recording  a team record 65 receptions for 982 yards and six touchdowns.

Vrable helped guide QB EJ Manuel in his rookie season in 2013, as Manuel set franchise records in both touchdowns (11) and completions (180) by a quarterback.

In his role as an Assistant QB coach, Vrable is responsible for the breakdown of film and assisting with the implementation of game plans.

Prior to joining the Bills, Vrable spent two years as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Charleston (WV). He had prior coaching stints at Syracuse and Robert Morris.

Vrable was also a former college quarterback at Marietta College

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports the Jets are a "possibility" to acquire Jay Cutler.

The Jets hired Jeremy Bates as their new QBs coach on Wednesday. He and Cutler have a long history together, and by most accounts, the two really like working with each other. Bates was Cutler's QBs coach in Denver early in his career when he went to the Pro Bowl, and then Bates was brought over to Chicago in 2012 to work with Cutler again. On top of Bates, the Jets also currently employ former Bears teammates Matt Forte and Brandon Marshall. It could be a match. The Bears are fully expected to release Cutler over the next month.

I am starting to believe the Jets may carry 9 qb's on their roster this year.

Interesting pick up, reassembling the '09 Trojans, maybe go after Carrol next year, lol.  

The reports on the '09 Trojans aren't inspiring, bad on 3rd downs, offense was mediocre, but they also faced major issues with a freshman QB taking over.  It'll be interesting to see how they have evolved from then to now, with different experiences.
