joewilly12
Mike Maccagnan’s top priority is rebuilding Jets, even if it means bringing in players with bad character Tweet email Jets GM Mike Maccagnan will do whatever it takes to fix Gang Green. (JULIO CORTEZ/AP) Mike Maccagnan is the new Father Flanagan in town, eager to save wayward souls to help save his bad football team. The Jets are in the business of winning games. No matter how much anyone waxes poetic about character, the bottom line in this bottom-line industry: Character doesn't really matter. Bad character and Maccagnan's mantra that players must truly love football are not mutually exclusive. Sketchy dudes can give their heart and soul to the game. The Jets general manager has proven that his top priority in rebuilding the mess that he inherited a couple of years ago centers on finding committed players regardless of their questionable makeup. In the past week, the Jets claimed a player who missed eight games last season after twice failing the league's substance abuse program and set up a meeting with another player who might or might not have wanted to retire (depending on who you ask) before missing the entire season with an ankle issue. The Jets' decision to claim 25-year-old nose tackle Mike Pennel off waivers from the Packers last week was the ultimate low-risk endeavor. Pennel technically doesn't even have a contract. Maccagnan will have a month to assess whether it's worth doling one out to the 6-4, 335-pound Pennel, who is scheduled to be a restricted free agent. If not, they'll cut him loose. No harm, no foul. Free-agent cornerback K'Waun Williams is scheduled to visit with the Jets on Wednesday, according to a league source, after the strangest of seasons. Williams, who started 10 games for the Browns in 2014 and 2015, filed a grievance against Cleveland in September seeking money for an impending ankle surgery and his 2016 base salary. The Browns suspended Williams for two games last August for refusing to play in a preseason game in Green Bay. Williams, 23, reportedly claimed that he was going to retire after losing his starting nickel corner job before saying that a sore ankle was the reason why he couldn't play against the Packers. The Bears claimed Williams after the Browns waived him at the end of August. Chicago ultimately parted ways with him. Williams was recently medically cleared after undergoing surgery to remove bone chips in his ankle. In September, Maccagnan picked up talented, but troubled tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins a few days after a second D.U.I arrest and accompanying embarrassing video from the incident. The general manager was in a particularly giving mood, because his tight end situation was a mess. Seferian-Jenkins didn't really help much, but he did stay out of trouble for the rest of the season. What does this all mean? Well, the Jets are desperate to find guys who can help them wash away the stink of the 2016 season. The talent void on Todd Bowles' roster is obvious. There's no real harm in making low-risk, high-reward moves with the hope of one or two sticking. The NFL isn't made up of choir boys. Nobody is perfect. Plenty of players have baggage, but there's a malfeasance threshold that Maccagnan shouldn't cross. Last year, the Jets didn't draft Tyreek Hill, who had pleaded guilty to choking his pregnant girlfriend in 2015. Of course, if Maccagnan even thinks about drafting Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon, who punched a woman and broke bones in her face, we'll have an altogether different story. JustInFudge
Well that strategy really created a wonderful locker room experience this past season that really helped keep the team together through some tough times...so why not keep the chemistry going strong!!!! Joe W. Namath
The new Father Flanigan. Hahahaha. Funny stuff. By this time next year we will have a new gm, coach and hopefully the number 1 pick in the draft. And the future will be bright.

Gas2No99
A solid move to replace Bruce Cater/EJ Henderson/David Harris would be to trade for Philly's solid 3-4 OLB under Chip Kelly who is no longer a fit in Schwartz's 4-3 system: Mychal Kendricks. Eagles re looking to dump him and his contract. He'd be worth a flyer on young talent locked into a contract.
ChuckkieB
Mac's top priority is to make sure he doesn't get himself fired so he's already playing with fire by going into 2017 with Petty and Hackenberg as his QB's. I cannot believe that he will go to war with his job on the line with Petty as his QB. A free agent signing like Glennon or the drafting of a QB in the first round seems like the only plays for him. Tinstar
Seriously, I wish this bunch would tell us all prior to it happening, the move the jets front office could make that would be correct in their eyes .

We all know that there is a large delegation on JN of people who want to nothing but attack every single move made by the front office. A few of those folks are in this thread. They are not hard to find. They hate everything the Jets do without exception and are prone to repeating themselves over and over and over.. Exactly, what does one have to do with the other? Are the fans who are complaining about the lockerroom saying that a player with a violation of some kind can't be a good teammate or has to be divisive? Why? #27TheDominator
This is kind of pushing it. Drugs don't necessarily equate to bad character. At least I can see the worry about the suspension risk, but the other kid? Maybe if it weren't the Browns, but their sh*t med staff nearly got Winslow Jr.'s leg amputated. rangerous
manish is pumping out some more bs. doesn't sound like any of these guys have done anything to anyone but themselves. they'll grow up. but if mac was truly intent on having bad boyz he'd be keeping sheldon, geno, henderson and while we're at it throw in fitz to keep them all fighting each other. Mychal Kendricks - LB - Eagles The Boston Herald's Jeff Howe reports the Eagles are still working to trade LB Mychal Kendricks. GM Howie Roseman is likely still holding onto Kendricks, DE Connor Barwin, C Jason Kelce, and even RB Ryan Mathews in an attempt to trade them for whatever he can acquire. Kelce is probably the biggest asset, but Kendricks is still just 26 and was viewed as a building block in the previous 3-4 scheme.
