How is David Harris still here?

$6.5 million cap savings if cut.  A total, and complete liability in coverage.  Basically he's a very expensive 2-down Inside Linebacker

And it's not like there are better, cheaper alternatives in free agency and the draft who can do stuff, like cover

They might be waiting to see if they can sign Kevin Minter from Arz. He is 26.

Exactly, if Minter comes in Harris goes.  Then our oldest LB would be 26

and this would be good for us.

I wonder what the team's average age was before the cuts and what it will be at start of the season.

Although he has aged, he did lead the team in tackles last season again.  That might be more of an indication of the talent around him than anything else but Harris definitely contributes on the field.  I would hope that if we do sign a younger LB that Harris gets a reworked contract to remain with the club.

If Maccagnan hits on his free agency targets our oldest DL would be 27 (Wilkerson) our oldest LB would be 26 (Minter)

and our oldest DB would be 28 (Skrine)

what's the hurry?  It's not like he has some roster bonus coming up or anything.  Cutting him now before we sign replacement makes no sense, does nothing more to help the cap numbers than cutting him weeks from now.

If we cut Harris who is the savvy vet on the D? Wilkerson the superstar who skips work on his birthday?

The jets need 1 leader who cares about the team more than himself. That is why harris is here

His name is Leonard Williams.

This. Harris is still a solid player. It's not his fault that Bowles idiotically has him covering TEs.

Yeah there is one. What about the second level? Darron Lee has been playing LB for like 3 years total.

Even as a 2 down linebacker. Harris has significant more value on the Jets than any other team. I think you are under valuing all the things Harris does that is not necessarily present on Sundays

Ok and in nickel formation who is supposed to cover TE if the offense is in 4-5 receiver set and TE is lined up between the numbers?

David F'n Harris

Because it creates$6.5 million in cap room and he is not good

Very simple. They are going to keep him until they sign his replacement. Then cut him. Otherwise, they could be caught with their pants down

He is that irreplaceable?  Between FA, draft, cuts and trade any semi-competent FO could replace Harris

Well you have to get a guy in FA before cutting him because we literally have no one else and if you create a big hole before the draft you are forced to fill that hole.

Henderson is not going to be around most likely and we sure as hell can't think of Lee as a solid run stopper.  I'm not opposed to cutting him but we are super thin at lb

when the Jets find a suitable replacement, he can be cut.  There is no additional benefit for the Jets by cutting him today rather than a month or so from now.  There's no roster bonus pinned to any specific date.  We save the same cap room if he is cut March 7th or May 7th.

Henderson is already gone

It matters nowhere that you are thin at LB in March.  I thought we were cleaning house with overpaid vets who suck

Harris is a two down LB who can't cover a one legged man running a drag route

Basically anyone in the draft past round 4 is a suitable replacement

If they cut Harris now, and they can't sign a replacement, then they are up the creek without a paddle. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush

Yeah and when Harris is starting for us next season and getting shat on every Sunday by JAG TE's and RB's (again) what will be the excuse?

What evidence do you have that says that's going to happen? Besides, if we are going in the tank, who frickin' cares?

The idea that we can't possibly cut Harris until we sign Kevin Minter is exactly the kind of stupidity that will keep this team mediocre forever.

Doesn't have to be Minter. Any replacement player needs to be signed. That way you are not stuck having to draft an ILB

Which is my point. Harris can't cover. Never has, never will. He should never be allowed outside the tackle box, ever. Bowles is a moron for having him covering anybody.

Great. Then sign some bum off the street, or draft one on day 3, or pick up a UDFA. But there is no reason a rebuilding team should be paying $6.5 million to a 33-year-old who runs like he has a load in his pants and can't cover a corpse with a blanket.
