Pro Day Reports

The two standouts at Penn State pro day were a pair of juniors, Chris Godwin and Garrett Sickels.

Godwin stood on most of his combine numbers but looked tremendous catching the ball. Those on hand said he was very quick and looked natural in all aspects of the position.

Earlier this week, it was announced Godwin will be visiting the Pittsburgh Steelers. Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley was on hand at Thursday's pro day for a little advanced scouting.

Sickels re-did everything from the combine and significantly improved all his marks. He measured a shade under 6-foot-4, weighed 255 pounds and touched 33.5 inches in the vertical jump. His 40 was timed in the high-4.7s to low-4.8s, while his three-cone was a very swift 6.8s.

Sickels worked both defensive line and linebacker drills, looking very athletic and fluid in each. Teams love the fact he can line up at multiple positions and in multiple schemes, with someone referring to him as a “Swiss Army Knife.”

Sickels met with the San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos and New York Jets.

The performance of Jordan Leggett continues to receive high praise.

Two things really impressed scouts today; Leggett’s 40 time and the strength he displayed during blocking drills. The Cincinnati Bengals spent a significant amount of time with Leggett who also met with the Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets.

The Jets had their tight end coach on hand as well as Rex Hogan, the team’s director of college scouting.

Dammit. Was hoping we could snag Leggett later on in the draft. So far other TE prospects have been overshadowing him, but he's one of the few that can be a legit 3 down TE who can block and catch the ball. Exactly what the Jets need. And he would pair nicely with Enunway, who is more of a receiving threat. A great Pro Day could push him up on draft boards. Maybe the Jets have a shot at him late in the 3rd round.

The TE that interest me the most in the later rounds is the kid from Iowa . Great straight line speed, superb blocker and catches the football . Extremely poor man's Howard, LOL .

That's what I was hoping for this Godwin kid from penn state.  Thought he would be a good later round WR but it sounds like his draft stock is rising rapidly.

UCLA, North Carolina, Louisiana Tech, South Florida and Boston College headline the pro-day schedule Tuesday. There will be a lot of eyes on Tar Heel signal caller Mitchell Trubisky.

For those who keep track, I was told Trubisky did not go to dinner with any team Monday night. Receiver Mack Hollins, who blew a hamstring out during his initial running of the 40 at the combine, will not run today.

Tying up a few loose ends from Monday, I’m told North Carolina State safety Josh Jones, one of the more underrated players at the position, looked terrific during his workout. Jones re-ran the short shuttles and participated in position drills, looking terrific. He met extensively with the New England Patriots and San Diego Chargers the night before the workout.

Toledo nose tackle Treyvon Hester, who had labrum surgery after the season and has been on the sidelines since, will work out for scouts on April 13.

UPDATE 1:25

North Carolina

The UNC workout was held outdoors in windy conditions.  For some reason the position drills for Mitch Trubisky and his receivers were last on the schedule so there was a bit of waiting around for the quarterback.

And while Trubisky displayed a good arm and velocity on his throws, overall he struggled with his accuracy.

Receivers were adjusting to errant throws or leaving their feet to grab passes high of the mark.  On occasion the ball left his hand funny and Trubisky was way off the target.  There were a few drops of catchable throws, including a bad one by Ryan Switzer.  Comparatively I thought DeShaun Watson’s workout from a week ago was better.

Running back T.J. Logan had a solid day.

He looked terrific in ball carrying drills, displaying quick feet and a smooth change of direction.  He also caught the ball very well.

Two Tar Heel defenders who stood out were defensive end/outside linebacker Mikey Bart and cornerback Desmond Lawrence.

Neither were invited to the combine but both looked solid in position drills.  I’ll go on record and say I thought Bart looked better than teammate Nazair Jones.

Eastern Michigan

The main attraction at EMU pro day was the teams defensive end Patrick O'Connor.

O’Connor, who’s also working out at Michigan’s pro day on Friday, measured 6046/277 pounds, completed 17 reps on the bench (had three taken away), jumped 31.5 inches in the vertical jump and 9-foot-6 in the broad jump.

He was then put through defensive line and linebacker drills as well as tight end drills.

O’Connor will run the forty, shuttles and three cone at the Michigan pro day.

Boston College

Linebacker Matt Milano stood on his combine numbers but participated in position drills and looked good.  He’s likely sealed himself as a late round selection.

Quarterback Patrick Towles turned in some athletic testing numbers then looked good throwing the ball.

Towles measured 6047/241 pounds including a hand of 9.5 inches.  His vertical jump reached 33.5 inches, he touched 10-feet even in the broad then timed 4.59s in the forty.

Towles looked good throwing the ball, showing a strong and accurate arm.   Just a single pass he threw hit the ground.  After the workout Towles spent a significant amount of time with the New York Jetsand Washington Redskins.

Towles is an intriguing quarterback prospect.  He offers next level measurables and arm strength but his tape is very inconsistent.  If he receives proper coaching and is given time to develop Towles could surprise at the next level.

If we pass on a QB in the 1st round, I think this kid Towles is the only other QB that interest me in this draft .

I'm not finding a Projectable Draft Round for Rios. Seems like an UDFA at this point

UCLA

UCLA's pro day is finished and results are coming in, but here’s what I can tell you: cornerback Fabian Moreau strained his pectoral muscle on the bench press and is presently undergoing further evaluation. He did not participate in position drills.

Prior to the bench, Moreau met with a host of teams. On Monday, he met with the Detroit Lions, Miami Dolphins, New Orleans Saints and Cincinnati Bengals. He also spent time with the defensive backs coach of the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday.

Bruins receiver and return specialist Kenneth Walker timed 4.32s in the 40.

UPDATE Receiving a few more updates from UCLA pro day.

Cornerback Marcus Rios measured 5110/192 pounds, completed 18 reps on the bench (33 inch arms)and posted a 10-foot-4 broad jump.  His forty came in at 4.49s, he timed 4.2s in the short shuttle and 7.22s in the three cone.

Rios met with the New York Jets at length after pro day.

Why is that?  Seems to be a late pick / UDFA?

I know what he is considered and that's exactly why he interest me .   Every QB in this draft needs time to sit and learn the NFL . Some may need more time than others, but they all need to sit . In a draft like this, why waste a pick on a QB like that when you already have 2 of them on the team . What I look for is a kid who was highly thought of coming out of high school, but fell through the cracks because of where he played and the type of coaching he received .

This kid can throw the football, is well liked by his teammates and is athletic as all get it . I like his release, his ball placement his mobility and his toughness .  His accuracy improved every year and he transferred from Kentucky in his final year to get experience playing in a pro-set offense .

He has a step learning curve, but I think he's a better prospect than Petty and can possibly survive on the Practice squad .

IMO, he's worth taking a flyer on  while you use the draft to add players at other positions of need .

I wouldn't put him ahead of Hackenberg potentially, but both players have the same kind of learning curve only for different reasons .

Ashland, Ohio is a town between Akron and Columbus with a population of 20,000. It had a lot more folks in it on Wednesday.

Ashland College held its pro day at the local high school and 16 NFL teams were represented, including the Bears, Saints, Steelers, Raidersand Lions, who all sent their tight ends coaches to work out Adam Shaheen, one of the fastest-rising prospects in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Shaheen (6-6, 278) stood on all of his numbers from the combine, but was put through a brisk workout that had everyone talking. So much so, he left his pro day with private workouts set up with six teams: Cleveland, Tampa Bay, Arizona, Philadelphia, Dallas and Tennessee.

The tight end class is one of the deepest we've seen in years, but I think on Friday morning of draft week -- the day after Round 1 ends -- there will be teams vying to get near the top of Round 2 to take this tight end.

So how did Shaheen end up at Ashland and not down the road at Ohio State or some other big-time football program? He told me at the combine that he weighed 210 pounds out of high school and went to college to play basketball. When his father reminded him that there were exactly zero 6-feet-6, back-to-the basket forwards in the NBA, he switched sports and went to the closest school to his home.

And somewhere, Urban Meyer is kicking himself.

Other notable pro days on Wednesday

CONNECTICUT

A heavy defensive coaching presence was felt at UConn's pro day as the Jets sent their defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach, the Lions sent their defensive backs coach, as did the Panthers. They were part of an NFL contingent represented by 25 teams on hand to watch an indoor workout on FieldTurf by 10 players, including one who has a shot at the first round.

» CB Obi Melifonwu was not measured but did weigh in at 219 pounds. He stood on all of combine numbers, with the exception of the short shuttle (4.30 seconds) and three-cone drill (7.06 seconds). This is a really smooth player who makes everything look easy. he has a chance to get into the first round.

» WR Noel Thomas (6-0 5/8, 201) ran the 40 in 4.49 and 4.50 seconds, had a 33-inch vertical and a 9-foot-10 broad jump. He pulled a hamstring on his second 40 and his day was finished.

» OL Andreas Knapp (6-8 1/2, 311) ran a 40 in 5.25 seconds, had a 30-inch vertical, an 8-10 broad jump, and added 23 lifts on the bench press. Like Thomas, he also pulled a hamstring running the 40 and did not work out. He's now on the NFL's radar and is going to have a lot of teams wanting to work him out. He's projected as a late-round pick or priority free agent.

RIos was a 4-star recruit, but he ended up missing a year because of some crazy infection.  I think he had a really good year as a junior, but I don't remember him from 2016.  Seems like he tested well enough and he is long enough even for the Seahawks.

Good info. You made me do a quick look...I found this. Wonder what happened in '16..

2016 - Saw action in all 12 games on special teams and made two starts in the Bruin secondary (Cal, Washington State) ... Credited with 18 tackles on the year ... Had multiple tackles in five games ... Totaled a season-best of five tackles at Cal.

2015 - Appeared in 13 games and made 11 starts ... Honorable mention All-Pac-12 Conference selection (coaches) ... Finished eighth on the team with 49 tackles ... Led the team with seven pass breakups ... Made a season-high 8 tackles against BYU ... Registered at least three tackles in eight games.

2014 - Returned to the field in spring 2014 and put the pads on in the fall ... Saw action in 12 games working on special teams and in the secondary ... Made one start (Utah) ... Credited with 14 tackles on the season, a quarterback sack, a forced fumble and a couple of interceptions ...His first interception at the Bruin two-yard line ended Cal's hopes of a rally in the game's final minute ... His second, in the fourth quarter at Colorado, gave UCLA an opportunity to win the game in regulation ... Recorded six tackles in his start vs. Utah ... Had two stops each in games vs. USC and Stanford ... Registered three tackles, a forced fumble and a sack in the bowl win.

2013 - Did not see game action.

2012 - Graduated early from high school and participated in 2012 spring practice ... Saw action in nine games as a reserve in the secondary and on special teams ... Credited with three tackles on the season ... Made one stop at Colorado ... Had one tackle in win over Utah ... Recorded one tackle vs. Stanford.

They switched to a 4-3 in 2016.  There were a bunch of stories about how that was going to free up McKinley.  I don't know if that had any effect on the secondary, but it might have.  Sometimes coaches like to get underclassmen more reps all things being even and I think Nate Meadors is another kid that will probably get drafted.  They also have a good safety Jaleel Wodood that played some at CB.  Like you said, Rios is probably a 7th at best, or likely UDFA.  They got a 5-star Darnay Holmes this year, so be ready to talk about him in a few years. Bet he returns a kick for a TD.

At Ohio St Pro Day: Belichick, Bowles, Tomlin, Hue, Harbaugh, Mularkey, Payton, Caldwell, Lewis. Seven GMs incl Maccagnan. Also M Ross NYG.

What is interesting about that is Notre Dame's pro day was at the same time... so no interest in DeShone Kizer?  Unless Morton/Bates were at Notre Dame but I would think Maccagnan would be on-hand for a QB.

Wasn't just Bowles + Macc at Ohio State's pro day. Was told practically "entire #Jets org" was in attendance (i.e., lots of scouts+coaches)

Also heard new OC John Morton was at Stanford's pro day ... And #Jets reps spent a lot of time w/ RB Donnel Pumphrey at San Diego St pro day

Further confirmation Eric Saubert, who measured 6047/249 pounds, timed between 4.65s to 4.69s in the forty. There is a slight correction on his vertical jump as it was 35.5 inches, not the 34.5 inches we previously posted.

He ran the three cone and short shuttle but I’m told there were problems with the turf as all the players slipped and were asked to rerun the shuttle/cone runs multiple times. As a result times are all over the place.

During drills Saubert looked terrific.

He caught every ball thrown and trapped just one pass, though it was a low ball drill.  Scouts on hand were impressed with his blocking as Saubert showed much better leg and hip drive.

The Dallas Cowboys and Cincinnati Bengals had tight end coaches on hand.

Perspective on D'Onta Foreman's 4.45 40 at 237 lbs today: Using combine data since 2003, no RB weighing 232+ has ever run that fast.

Of those weighing 225+ only three backs have run faster than Foreman: Knile Davis (227) 4.37 Chris Henry (230) 4.41 Mario Fannin (231) 4.41

Florida State

It seems everyone at Florida State pro day who participated at the combine improved their forty time by one-tenth.

As has been reported, running back Dalvin Cook timed in the low to mid 4.4s then looked really good in drills.  New York Jets running back coach Stump Mitchell was on hand for the workout.

Receiver Travis Rudolph timed 4.56s in the forty, better than his 4.65s at the combine.

Reports are receiver/return specialist Kermit Whitfield ran in the low 4.3s, but that time still needs to be confirmed.
