And you thought Idzik's picks were done making news

Thank God we got so much better at drafting.

Word.  Mac's first 7th round pick will have a better career than 12 of Idzik's 13 picks in '14.

Admittedly, coming away with two DT's in two drafts makes the fact that every other pick could retire tomorrow and no one would notice seem less upsetting.

I was actually excited abut a draft where we had 75 picks. I thought, hey the odds are.....

Idzik deservedly takes the fall for that, but it's an indictment of the entire organization that those picks failed like that. Every scout, every coach, every personnel hack should have been purged.

100% for sure a case where avg joe mock draft fan would have done better.

Basically the average NFL career for guys who make rosters is something like 3 plus years. So some of these players are almost ancient history because it's like 4 years since Idzik's first draft. Even guys like Sammy Watkins who were top picks are on the bubble at least with their original teams. The NFL landscape of players is changing drastically every 3 years.

I think the sh*t-ass beat reporters are missing out on a goldmine by not writing a book about the lead-up to that draft. Like, if you told me that Idzik just really hated Rex, hated Woody, and hated his job and and tried to pull a Major League so he could get out of it, I'd completely buy it.

I think they all were, so there is justice.

Interestingly enough, Idzik did some college "scouting" of his own during the 2013 college football season.  I know for sure that Pryor was Idzik's pick all the way.  He went down to UCF to watch Louisville at UCF and came back with a hardon for Pryor.

Yeah, as much as I'd love to hang Pryor around Rex's neck, I recall the story about Idzik calling Rex and telling him "you're gonna love this guy" or something.

As Tanny had a Hardon for Vlad.  They are both numbers guys with little ability to see the forest from the trees.

It wouldn't be upsetting to you @T0mShane, (but not much is) but for those of us who were encouraged by the likes of Anderson, Shell, Burris, and Jenkins along with Leo and Simon...we are actually looking forward to watch them take what we hope will be the next step toward being quality NFL starters.  Even Peake gets a pass for last season IMO.  When the QB play is as bad as the Jets had, how productive is a part-time seventh round receiver going to be?

As we always say, you need three years to grade a draft, Mac's first class is about to enter their third season, so saying they're great or terrible at this point is early.  What we can say is that they've shown signs of being capable NFL players at the very least...far more than roughly 13 of Idzik's 19 picks.

What a great post and a welcome  breath of fresh air to see around here.  Idzik is comparable to no one other than Matt Millen and I would argue he was worse.

Included in that "19 picks" are 7 picks taken in the sixth and seventh rounds. Jace Amaro had 53 catches as a rookie, or 43 more than Devin Smith has had in two seasons. Smith and Lorenzo Mauldin are likely cuts this year, and if they draft a QB, Petty will be gone too. Darron Lee was getting replaced by Julian Stanford and Bruce Carter at times last year and looked like the overmatched gimp strong safety we all knew he'd be even before he had the crippling soft-tissue injury that most 180-pound dudes get when they take steroids to get up to 220 lbs. Brandon Shell showed so much promise that they gave Jags castoff Kelvin Beachum $11 mil to replace him. Let's leave Hackenberg out of this conversation as a small mercy to you. We can hope they improve, but it's blind optimism to suggest that Maccagnan is light years better than anyone, even someone like Idzik, yet.

Mac's drafts have been as bad or worse

Are u f*cking kidding me? So he took a flyer on Hackenberg with a 2nd rounder. I'd rather fail picking a QB at 2, then pick Stephen Hill, Vlad Ducasse, and all the rest that have failed since David Harris was taken in the 2nd round.

You guys expect too much too soon out of draft picks. My god, every WR Macc took late or picked up as UDFAs is better than all of Idziks picks except Quincy Enunwa who most of you boobs called a bust too. Robbie Anderson might turn out to be better than Quincy when it's all said & done at being a wide receiver. Quincy is a bit of a hybrid who still is working on his hands, though he gets better every year.

Ive said this before, a blind folded monkey throwing darts would have probably done a better job than Idzik. I still don't get the Macc hate yet? No GM is gonna draft at 100% success rate. We picked at f*cking 20 last year, who would you have taken over Lee there? Macc is trying to add speed to every level of the defense. If he comes away with Adams in this draft Lee, Adams could be similar to Wagner/Thomas combo in Seattle. Until we get a QB he's gotta find starters & he's doing that.

What moron GM uses 14 picks in 1 draft without at least 1 trade up...what a fkg idziot

He was a complete failure who single handedly set the jets back years.

There is no comparison to Macc except from those who actually thought Gen Smith was an NFL QB.

I don't know how much Tannenbaum relied on his scouts, but Idzik did what Idzik wanted.  Not saying that Rex Ryan -- or any coach -- should be the ones making the draft selections, but other than Tajh Boyd, Rex didn't have much input into any of Idzik's draft picks or FA moves.
