I agree with you and hope this happens.

It will.  The empty stadium, the fact that Darnold might decide to stay at USC to avoid this sh_tshow, the fact that all of Mac's draft picks not named Leo suck.

That's a bold as hell statement to make, so bold in fact that I'll call it stupid and incredibly biased. They haven't done a damn thing yet expect have a good camp. And you're already writing them off?

Ridiculous. There are many criticism one can make about Mac, but its hard to take any of yours seriously because of your obvious darksider agenda.

I'll be bumping this thread when OJ Howard is making multiple Pro Bowls while Brady continues to put up 40-burgers on our secondary

Adams was the best pick we can make and about as obvious as Leo was two years ago. These guys will be cornerstones of our defense for years to come.

And Josh McCown still hasn't won the QB competition, he cant until after the preseason games have started.

Oh good.  Nothing like a negative whiny rant to rub in peoples faces when they are feeling down. I wanted OJ too. (Or Mike Williams).  We took a safety. Get over it and move on.

Best player maybe. But best pick?  I mean we are still talking about safety.  You can change it to ILB, OG, RT or NG and it would still be a fair point. Non essential positions at 6 overall are risky. If any other player pans out at QB, LT, WR, Edge Rusher, CB....then Adams has to be elite to justify the pick.

Don't be silly.  How can you expect someone to do a told you so bump without being able to say "I told you so."?

Lets see how this pan out, afterall it was only Costello's opinion.  BTW, it does appear that Marcus Maye may have been a nice pick in the second round.  Like most I was initally disappointed with another rsafety in round 2, but it is a position of need and if Maye works out, that would be great.

Building a winning program doesn't happen over night.

How does starting Hack over a generally near-equal McClown stop us from building a winning program?

It takes time and making good decisions.

How does starting Hack over a generally near-equal McClown equate to a bad decision?

Please limit answers to non-touchy-feeling-players-crying-tears-emotions! answers, if you please.

The decision to give Hack a job he doesn't deserve doesn't advance the cause of building a winning program.

Define "deserve".  Did McClown "deserve" to be signed?  I would say his resume to-date would indicate a major "**** no he didn't" to that question.

So what harm does starting a near-equal Hack over McClown, who doesn't currently "deserve" to be on an NFL roster, much less be a starting QB, hurt the Jets going forward?

Quote

Say what you want about McCown, he's an actual professional.

A professional journeyman loser, according to his resume.  He has less on-field success than any QB in recent Jets memory, and that's says something.  I'd rather play Geno Smith, if that tells you anything.

Quote

Hack hasn't earned anything

Neither has McClown.

Quote

and they shouldn't give him the QB job

I agree.  If he is generally equal to McClown, he wins the competition due to his youth and potential upside.  By his play being generally equal.  On the field.

Putting raw players in positions they aren't ready for isn't a recipe for success.

Putting placeholder loser journeyman in positions where the do nothing for the team long term and take snaps away from young players does.....what for us again?

McCown is a crappy QB but is better than Hackenberg.  This isn't socialism.  If Hack can't outplay a career loser like McCown in TC and preseason he doesn't belong in the NFL let alone starting

Ok. 2017 wasnt the year. How abput 2016? 2015? 2014? 2013? And on and on.....

We have one first round pick on offense. One. James Carpenter. The core of our OLine was just cut or retired. We have a 6th rounder and a bunch of street free agents, late round picks, and other teams castoffs on Offense.

Did they even PICK an offensive lineman in the draft? I honestly dont remember. The team has zero offensive talent in place. Quincy Enunwa is a nice player, but not a building block. But hey, we'll get to see that Todd Bowles Defense in action with our two new safetuea!

You know, the way we had that Herm Edwards, "draft 3 Corners a year" Defense, and the Rex Ryan, "I need first rounders at every position" Defense.

They neglected the offense for so long, Jets fans are numb to it. And when they draft Darnold or Allen or whoever next draft, and we watch him fail, like all of the others....dont be surprised. Because its predictable. But hey! We got us some damn good safeties! And McCown sure does have presence. We should give him more reps to continue his 15 years of "development".

wait a second.  how many teams go into the season with all 22 positions set?  you can probably count them on one hand. i agree they haven't spent a ton of high draft picks on offense if you disallow hack, smith, geno, amaro over the past 4 drafts. the thing here is they pulled the plug on mangold (he probably only had one more year anyway) and let clady go.  neither of these two guys were in the future plans.  they firmed up the center position with johnson and the right side with winters and probably shell.  in reality there is only a hole at lt especially if beachem can go.  but offensive line churning is noting new.  a couple of seasons ago the patsies played a ton of players on the oline.  how'd that work out.  the steelers have had problem.  so have the chargers.  the biggest problem is not yet finding a qb.  imo costello is just being a blowhard like he usually is.  sure it would be great if hack beat out mccown outright but even if it's close he should get the nod.  if mccown was signed expressily to start this season they should have signed a guy like cutler. the second biggest problem are the wr's.  the wco requires the wr's do some reading and reacting.  it takes a while for them and the qb to get on the same page.

we'll see what happens.  i think hack will win out.

How many teams end the prior season with a BIG ? at the QB position and how many teams  start the following season  with a BIG ? at the QB position.

I hope Hack wins out also.

you know back in 74 terry bradshaw was benched in favor of joe gilliam.  it happens.  i just hope the jets are doing everything they can to get hack ready for the show.  and no matter what costello or serby or maneesh say, are any of them qualified to analyze a play and know if the qb missed the throw or the receiver missed the route?  i doubt it.

The Jets haven't had a decent QB since Joe Namath the closest was Mark Sanchez its been a sad long run.

no doubt.  i'm just not going rely on costello/serby/maneesh to tell me how good hack/mccown/petty are playing.  if mccown is so good, what does he need first team reps for?  he's seen everything.

Where was this argument last year?  As I recall you were apoplectic at the thought of starting anyone other than a loser journeyman QB who did nothing for the team long term and took snaps away from younger players.

The reason you start McCown is the same reason you should have started Geno last year.  The alternatives are worse.

So the GM failed to upgrade the QB position.

He has NOT been clearly better. And he sucks. If they start McClown its just a repeat of the mistakes of the last 2 years.

I hope Hack beats him out because this will be a distraction to the team.

That's mostly right but I still don't think you can make a definitive assessment on a 22 yr old QB who is a couple months into learning a foreign system.

It's really simple...  You start McCown until you've been eliminated from post season contention OR he has a couple horrific games in a row then you hand it to Hack.  It was obvious right they announced the McCown signing.

I guess, I'd ask what you consider close?  Hack hasn't thrown a pick yet. He will, but he hasn't yet. McCown has. He has also "completed" more "passes" in camp so far as well. McCown isn't going to go out there and play great.  He will go out there and be bad or just ok.  If you think he can go out there and actually raise the talent level of this team and play very well...fine. I get the argument then. But if we are just saying yeah they both suck...but McCown has more experience sucking....that is pointless.  Play the kid who MIGHT potentially one day improve.  Not the 38 year old guy who never will and is likely regressing more and more as time takes it's toll on him.

Close, I don't think is a metric that I can ascertain from reading a summary of tweets on JetNation.  Fact is, Bowles, Mac, and Co. see these guys a hell of a lot more than we do.  And, while I don't heap praise on any of them, acting like they're actually idiots and can't discern who's better is only idiotic on the part of the fan saying it.

Under the PI and UR penalties as enforced, things are not equal. Defenders are nullified by design. Spare pass rusher, defenders are less valuable than a center, LT, RT, QB or other skill position guy.   And if QB is not Priority #1, jeezI don't know what you are thinking, But the Jets front office figures to be hiring.

So you draft by position not by talent.  You would take a mid round QB at 6 because QB is important.

Not how any GM runs a draft.  How fans who love to second guess talk though.

Oh come on man, you know what he's saying. Don't be that guy on the internet. Positional relevance is an important thing to consider. Positions that are more important get more value when creating the boards, as they should.

I don't doubt their ability to gauge who gives them the best play. I doubt Bowles' ability to act in the teams interest over his own and take the more difficult path of developing a young QB.

I get that Bowles is almost certainly getting fired and he's not interested in developing a young QB for the next guy.  But f*(k him. That's why you need a GM to keep him in check and force the issue if needed.

Honestly, do you believe that Todd Bowles sits down with his offensive coordinator, and QB coach who tells him to start Hackenberg or Petty and he instead starts Josh McCown  ?
