Don't look now, but Jets are being 'out-tanked' by Bills

i?img=%2Fmedia%2Fmotion%2F2017%2F0811%2F

The New York Jets aren't the only AFC East team focused on the future. The Buffalo Bills are, too.

And they're attacking it more aggressively than the Jets, which could sabotage general manager Mike Maccagnan's perceived master plan.

By trading oft-injured wide receiver Sammy Watkins and cornerback Ronald Darbyon Friday, the Bills have added to their stockpile of draft picks. Don't forget, they traded down during the 2017 draft, snagging a 2018 first-rounder from the Kansas City Chiefs in the Patrick Mahomes deal.

So now the Bills have two first-round picks, two second-rounders and two third-rounders.

Their new management team has positioned itself to be a major player in the 2018 draft, and that will be useful if the team decides to dump Tyrod Taylor and seek a franchise quarterback.

If the Bills and Jets are trying to trade up to the No. 1 spot to select, say, Sam Darnold, guess which team will have the most ammunition to make that happen?

Not the Jets, who don't have any extra draft picks and aren't projected to receive any compensatory choices. Right now, their best bargaining chip is Sheldon Richardson.

Fans already on board with tanking will no doubt hope the Jets lose them all, securing the No. 1 pick in the process.

The Jets and Bills face each other in Week 1. Some might call it the Tank Bowl. Clearly, both franchises competing for more than just one game. They're trying to brighten their futures.

Bills now have two firsts, two seconds, and two thirds next year. They're in excellent position to trade up for the QB of their dreams and still have plenty of picks left.

they won't have to trade up, but it shows teams are looking to next years QB class as a good one

The Bills have been a consummate team of pretenders over the last few years, I guess they finally realized they were in purgatory and decided to make the most logical move to rectifying that by reinvesting in draft capital.

Wouldn't shock me if he the Bills went full Glennon-Trubisky and drafted a QB to replace him but kept Taylor around. I'm on record on not being sold on a class of QB's that have yet to play their "final" year of college (Darnold is consensus number one until he's not like a bunch of other QB's in the past) but you don't dump a promising (if snake bitten) WR or budding CB if you're confident in your QB's chances of succeeding. He's just a means to an end with one last chance to prove he's the poor man's Russell Wilson. Quite the scenario to be in, but hey he's getting paid like a starter for now and has a fruitful career as a well paid backup in his future.

They traded a SOLID Press Cover CB in Darby for Butter hands MAtthews?!?!?!

DARBY >>>>>>J. Matthews

Matthews has better stats than Watkins. Watkins was already missing camp time with injuries this offseason.

Watkins was a hilariously bad pick for them. Worse than even the Jets blunders since they gave up two 1sts for him. Even when healthy, he has only flashed talent and hasn't shown the ability to take over the game even when healthy. Add on top of that, he's been a dunderhead with statements insulting "the little people" and tweeting about he and OBJ are going to set the record for salary with new contracts...

Darby was great his first year, not so much his second. He may not have been rebounding in their camp and if they're going to play the same defense Carolina does then he'd be playing his weakest ability. He was drafted for Rex's scheme which is very different from McDermott's scheme.

The Bills got better imo. A more consistent, non-injured receiver who has better stats than Watkins despite his "butter hands" reputation and a corner with similar stats to the one they traded who fits their defensive scheme better. They got extra picks for the privilege of doing it. It almost seems like they have some sort of plan.

If any fans should be pissed, it's Jets fans because it's obvious Buffalo is preparing to go for a QB next year and have the draft assets to get it done.

I'm still of the belief that the Bills are going to be the worst team in the division when it's all said and done this season. This doesn't help them at all.

Looks like the are trying to out tank us. Dammit Mac!

Smart moves IMO. They're loaded up for the 2018 draft. Watkins is too iffy with his injury history, getting a 2nd back is pretty nice return.

But I don't think we have to worry about them stealing our tanking spotlight! They're still a 7-9 team like last year.

The bills are now commuted to rebuilding through the draft, something macc talks about but doesn't commit to.  The jets had the chance to move down in rd 1 and add picks but chose not to.  The move now is to eat sheldons salary and trade him for  2 next year

Miami and Buffalo might both give us competition in the Darnold sweepstakes.

At this point Miami and Buffalo are actively managed teams with some type of plan.  Can't say it is a good plan, but it is a plan.    They are proactive.  Macc and Woody seem to like watching the world come to them.

This is another example of the Jets conundrum, and I think it comes from Woody.  They only do deals that appear clearly in their interest.  They don't do deals where someone can say both sides won.

In the NFL, to get players you can spend money and use draft picks.  No one was spending a draft pick on Decker, since he already cost $7mm.    He probably knew he could sign with Tennessee, which is a team on the rise.   So the Jets asked him to take a pay cut, he declined, and he signed for a bit less with TN.

No one is giving up a 1st round draft pick to pay SR or Mo big money.   I don't know why anyone on this board or the Jets think as much.   If the Cowboys really offered a second round pick last year, Macc should be fired, unless Woody veto'd the move, which is possible.

But Bowles and Macc will be another team that gets fired because they took jobs working for Woody.  This insanity needs to stop.

Watkins is a great talent but he is never on the field and was FA after next season.  Not sure how this trade was a loss for Buffalo

Wrong.  Last season was the only year he had significant down time.

2016 - 8 Games  28 Receptions 430 Yards  Avg 15.4  2 TD

2015- 13 Games  60 Receptions 1,047 Yards Avg  17.5 9 TD

2014- 16 Games  65 Receptions 982 Yards Avg 15.1 6 TD

The Rams were in desperate need of a deep threat and that is exactly what Watkins gives them.  They have had no deep threat at all for the past few years, so this was a good move for the Rams. Mathews is a downgrade for the Bills -- a placeholder during the tank. They do get the Rams second round pick in the 2017 draft, but that doesn't do anything for them this year.  Their intentions are very clear.  They may or may not do well with that pick next year, but it is definitely a loss for the here and now.  Productive, explosive players don't grow on trees.
