Bowles horrendous time managment rears its ugly head.....again

Bowles horrendous clock management cost us about 40 seconds and a 2 min warning clock stopage. You always take your TOs on plus side of 2 min warning that is coaching 101. By "saving" the TO we started drive with 1:52 and the 2 min warning lost to the change of possession. Had he called TO after 1st or 2nd down we would have gotten ball back with about 2:40 and the 2 min warning. That's indefensible and embarrassing for a 3rd year coach.

I would hire John Morton as head coach and fire Bowles at the end of the season. No matter how much Bowles "overachieves"  with a at best 8-8 record we will always be at a disadvantage with him leading the team.

Unless I am not remembering correctly, Bowles made the right call.

The Patriots could run the clock to the 2 minute warning even if we used the time out.

I don’t know what it is but the Jets haven’t had a coach that was able to grasp the concept of how important timeouts are since Parcells. Rex was dogsh*t with them too, and Mangini kept it together his first year before god knows what the hell happened. Not to mention Herm having to bring in a clock management specialist.

What is so hard to grasp about not burning your TOs in a close game? Absolutely take the delay.

What was actually worse was the decision making at the end of the first half where after escaping a scoring scare with a missed FG Bowles had his sketchy quarterback throwing the ball.  Instead of going into halftime with a lead, the game was tied and you knew it was all over.

You sure? When did the Patriots start that drive?

Pretty sure when watching, it didn't matter if the Jets used a time out since the Pats could take it down to the 2 minute warning. Not sure where you're getting 2:40 left.

They stopped the Patriots on second down at 2:50 If they call timeout there and then get the third down incomplete they would get the punt back around 2:40 with the 2 minute warning stoppage available. If the patriots convert the third down it doesn't ****ing matter that they kept the timeout the game would be over at that point. That's why you call timeout after the first or second play. In all likelihood you know the patriots will have to throw the ball on third down to convert and win the game out right. They aren't running the ball 3rd and 7 to get you to call a timeout or run the clock down they will throw to win the game as they did. That's why any coach without marbles in their head like Bowles will call timeout after the first or second down knowing the opponent has to throw the ball on third down.

Again if what you're saying is true you're assuming the Patriots are throwing the ball with 2:40 left. I say they threw it because the Jets still had a TO. If the Jets call a TO with 2:40 left, the pats can run the ball down to the 2 minute warning leaving the Jets with no time outs. It was the correct call.

Bowles can't coach, if this team is in rebuild why are they playing 38 yr old qb & not playing young receivers they drafted

So he should play the younger guy even though the coaches jobs are to play the best 11 players and win

I don't want to get on him b/c I think he's done a great job bringing this team together and getting them ready to compete but his game management really needs improving.  The wasted TOs are a weekly thing, if you waste one early 2nd half(which you should never do) then you can't waste a 2nd and that last drive of ours where we kicked the FG we wasted at least 2 minutes taking our time which really hurt us on that last drive.  even w/ the burned TOs if we don't waste all that time on our FG drive we have a much better chance to tie on the last drive.

uh the time management was when mccown was forced to call 2 time outs because he couldn't get the play off.  even if your recollection is right the series was two patsie runs followed by an incomplete pass.  that brought them to 2:05 when the patsies punted.  the jets took over with 1:53 left.  so where's the beef?  at that point in the game they only had 1 time out left due to mccown.

The wasted time outs started in the preseason. Amazing how they burn through their timeouts, only to run a play that goes nowhere.

Again the wasted two time outs was inexcusable especially with a 15 year veteran QB but this is not a problem that only happens to the Jets. It happens to every NFL team. Maybe the real from Morton to Bates was slow. Maybe it was on Bowles who was indecisive. Maybe it was the players in the huddle. No one knows. They have to clean it up but it's not a Jet problem.

Yes this was the most not talked about error in the game

You have a point but when you get on this board fans complain how Bowles is not aggressive at the end of the half. It's almost weekly.

Don’t agree, you need points to beat the Patriots. McCown threw a bad pick, the fault rests with him. You play to win, you don’t play not to lose.

Props to you. If you are the fan who says hey Bowles should be more aggressive before the half, you have to live with the decision. It's the fan that flip flops and mmqb the calls shouldn't complain

On a side note, the rhetoric was the players are quitting on Macadoo. But you won't read that this week. Why? Because the Giants won. It's lazy reporting.

Don Lagreca had a similar point; always hear about the stirring halftime speech or the military vet that spoke to the players during the pregame and how great that all was. But every team does that kind of stuff every Sunday. For one team because of the outcome it gets reported like it's the very reason they won. But the losing team did something similar.  The press makes up a lot of stuff after the fact if a team wins. Never heard of a losing squad that had great chemistry either.

Year one Bowles was a rookie HC and was in over his head.  Poor in game management in general but the vets and Fitz's insanely good year bailed him out.

Year two Bowles still with poor in game management AND aging vets were out of control with their combined ego trips.  Bowles and his over the hill OC and his other assistant coaches lost all control.

Year three Mac (correctly) purges the vets.  Bowles purges his CS.  Bowles either gets lucky signing Morton and a few other CS upgrades or he is actually settling in to his HC responsibilities.  Mac signs a few waver wire FA's and all of a sudden there is team chemistry happening here.

Bowles is managing the team, both in game and in prep, much much better.  Mac created the roster that Bowles is able to coach.  Win/win.

it started in 2015, it's been a recurring problem.  to be fair it is an issue for most teams but not as bad as it has been for us.  nothing drives me more crazy than wasting a TO in the 3rd qtr of a close game.  TOs are so precious in the 2nd half and we give them away like Tannenbaum used to give away draft picks.

I don't mind the aggressiveness, I just mind the personnel on the offensive side of the ball that is tasked with executing the aggressiveness.

People have been killing him for being too conservative. As a coach you get blamed either way. That is why they make a lot of money I guess lol.

Just refusal to acknowledge mistakes and learn from them regarding time management is the depressing part. Even if we field a good team in the future, if he's the coach he's definitely going to cost this team in a few close games with his decisionmaking.

Just hang a sign in the locker room saying "TAKE THE DELAY OF GAME"

It'd be nice if any of our awesome beat writers would ever ask Bowles if they had a policy in place about burning timeouts in the second half. The team sucks, but the failure to grasp situations that a 12 year old in Madden can, is maddening. The timeout is worth more than 5 yards.

The greatest coach ever burned a TO to save a five yard too many men penalty.

This is a sound strategy depending upon down and distance and the time of the game; and you also have to factor in if you have offense that can gain the five yards back, the Pats have Brady and the Jets don't and that is a big big difference...

Exactly. Belly feels it's more important to not take a 5 yard penalty.

Turn on any game. I see QB's jump up and call a time out all the time right before the play clock hits zero.

Now we should take 5 yard penalties? Get the damn play in quicker. From Morton, to Bates, to McCown. Get it in quicker. Get the subs in quicker.

Also needed to have the team in a hurry up during the second to last possession.
