Pats make Daniels the league's youngest coordinatorAssociated Press

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Patriots promoted 29-year-old quarterbacks coach Josh McDaniels to offensive coordinator Friday, making him the youngest coordinator in the NFL.

Charlie Weis left as coordinator after the 2004 season to become coach at Notre Dame, and no one took his place in 2005. McDaniels and coach Bill Belichick split most of the play-calling duties.

McDaniels joined the Patriots in 2001 as an assistant in the scouting department and was a member of the defensive coaching staff for three seasons before becoming quarterbacks coach in 2004.

That year, quarterback Tom Brady produced the highest rating of his career, 92.9, which was also the second-highest single-season passer rating in team history. Brady's 28 touchdown passes ranked second in the AFC and tied his career high from 2002.

The move is the latest shuffling on the Patriots' staff. Earlier this week, linebackers coach Dean Pees was appointed defensive coordinator, replacing Eric Mangini, who left to become coach of the New York Jets after one season as New England defensive coordinator. The 35-year-old Mangini is the youngest head coach in the NFL.

Mangini, in turn, replaced Romeo Crennel, who left after the 2004 season to become coach of the Cleveland Browns.

The Patriots, winners of three of the past four Super Bowls, were eliminated by the Denver Broncos last Sunday in the second round of the playoffs.

Good move by the Pats.

He basically acted as OC this year and he called all the plays (other than Brady at the LOS).

Can someone explain to me what the hell Belly did this past season? Man what a figure head.

I told you they wouldn't win anything without Charlie Weis. I hope you Pat fans are happy with you AFC East title. That is all you will sniff for a long time.

so I guess all that talk last of season about Weiss leaving but "Belli will take over the play calling without missing a beat" crap was just that, a bunch of crap...

IMO, it was BB's complete arrogance why he didn't name an OC last year.

Also, the Pats offense was more productive last season then any years CW was the OC.

At least get your facts straight Max.

Unlike the Jets, the Pats will reload instead of rebuild this offseason.

Another deep playoff run next season is an absolute guarantee.

Live with it.

The Pats didn't win the Super Bowl last year. You should take off the homer glasses.

Not much for me to live with. The Pats run is over. It is now Mangini Time.

DAMN Tx, don't get start getting soft and agreeable now...its no fun when you agree [-X

Does it really matter? Either way, we owned the Jets just like we have since Belichick came here and we will continue to own you until he leaves. How's that?

From his press conference.

Did you call all of the plays last year?

"Bill [belichick] is responsible for whatever ends up being given to the quarterback and goes into the game to be called. We worked together on that as a staff. However it ends up getting in to Tommy [brady] or the quarterback that was in the game, Bill is responsible for that. That's about all I can say on that."

The Pats passing offense was more productive because they could not run and couldn't keep the better offenses off the scoreboard.

Look at Brady's road numbers if you think he was in better hands with ole Josh compared to Charlie.

I love Brady but even the Herald(below) gives him mixed reviews and acknowledges he could have used a coordinator.

Interesting Shelter, because sometime during the middle of the season, at one of his press conferences, BB said that McDaniels was responsible for calling the plays.

Keep in mind, Brady called/changed a ton of plays at the LOS this year.

Shelter,

Please explain to me why one OC versus another would have an impact on Brady's road games versus his home games?

Brady's best two games of the year came on the road versus the Steelers (which he won single-handidly) and the Falcons.

Not sure I see your point at all.

yeah, "productive" meaning they were behind so often that Brady had to throw 4000 yards, rather than run out the clock with a decent sized lead in seasons past

they didn't have enough offense to win a superbowl either, something they had with Charley Wizzle

1) You are 100% correct.

2) You are 100% wrong (5 turnovers in a divisional playoff game will end the season for many teams).

You missed big time BO.

Last year was an abbreation in the Patriots' dynasty. The offense with the exception of last year had been in the teens in yardage and points. Only last year with a productive running game did it become dynamic.

the same offense that had 1500 yards by Dillon, or put up all those points against the Panthers in the 2003 SB? or 41 on the Steelers in the AFC Championship last year?

Not for nothing mate, but you can't win the Super Bowl every year.

For crissakes we made it to the 2nd round of the playoffs and only lost because we turned the ball over 5 fricken times.

BB did a great job this year. He cut, I mean placed, Duane "highway" Starks on IR earlier this year because he sucked ass. He realised his mistake and took care of it.

The Pats were lucky to make the Playoffs with the brutal schedule to start the season and all of the injuries.

Don't you wish the Jets could have had coaching like that?

Admit that the only reason the Pats won those 3 Super Bowls was because of Eric Mangini and now the Jets have him!

Crap! I forgot to that Eric Mangini was the reason the Pats won those Super Bowls. Damn it!

BTW: I predict a 6-10 season for the Jets next year.

Tx, I've been working and looking at the board but as you know I only chime in when I have something to say.

And all I have to say is that the Jets are in turmoil right now and I love it.

The OC is pissed, the DC was fired, and 35 year-old Mangini is running the show.

New England Patriots: 2006 AFCE Champs...........

Because we all know that Jets fans love their two Division titles! If it is three let me know.

Of course I'm not counting preseason titles!

BB is the HC and has final say. He probably let him call most of the plays but remember this, BB was and is in every meeting when they work on the game plans (offense and defense).

A big factor in the lack of a running game had a lot to do with Dillon being hurt and his backup, Kevin Faulk being out for most of the season and the "metaphors" being a little weak and banged up... just like our Jets unfortunately we didn't have Tom Brady!

Dude, the AFCE didn't even exist in 1968.

The Pats have won more friggn' Super Bowls in the last 4 years then the Jets have won AFCE titles in their entire history.

That's pretty friggn' sad.

..and before the past 4 years, the Pats won what exactly?

4 AFCE titles and 2 AFC Championship titles.

I obviously can't defend the Jets record, but the Pats were mediocre for most of their existence and winning the division once every ten years or so is not exactly something to brag about. The past 4 years of course, is something to brag about.
