Mangini retains Westhoff; silence reigns

DENVER -- The Jets' carousel of coaching confusion kept spinning Friday, with confirmation that Mike Westhoff will be retained as special-teams coach.

A person with knowledge of the situation said head coach Eric Mangini apparently has slapped a gag order on the assistants while he continues to assemble his staff.

Offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger's status remained a topic of speculation Friday. Attempts to reach Heimerdinger, who is unhappy about being retained, were unsuccessful.

The rest of the staff also was incommunicado, the first sign that Mangini has adopted the Bill Parcells-Bill Belichick policy of "one voice," with assistant coaches basically being off-limits to the media.

Westhoff's situation was resolved Friday after three days of meetings with Mangini. It is believed that Westhoff will receive a new contract -- his existing deal had only one year left -- and will keep some of his assistant head coach duties. But the circumstances were unclear because Westhoff and a team spokesman declined comment.

It is believed that Heimer.dinger, who was passed over for the head coaching position, wants to be freed from his contract, which has two years left, to pursue other opportunities. The Jets have refused.

Heimerdinger's long-term future with the team could be resolved once the Broncos' playoff run is over. Heimer.dinger, a college roommate of Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan, is the logical choice to succeed Gary Kubiak as Denver's offensive coordinator once Kubiak officially becomes the Texans' head coach.

If Heimerdinger ultimately leaves, Mangini appears to have targeted Browns offensive line coach Jeff Davidson as a possible coordinator.

I wonder if it was Mangini or Bradway that did this...seems like there is already a power problem

This is a Mangini move. And it is the right call. You want to bitch Dinger? Bitch to your wife because you ain't talking to the media.

Bradway would have said hey guys please don't talk to the media. But if you want to, that is okay. Do whatever you are most comfortable with.

Phil you must have sold your soul to Woody... cmon brother you have to seem some problem in this. The Jets are just haggling over the money..they are interviewing other people behind the scenes.

Woody is a clown. You want to know when I learned everything I needed to know about Woody? When he sent Jay Cross on Mike and the Mad Dog. He was sent there years ago to generate buzz\answer questions on the new stadium.

Jay Cross got schooled. Got it handed to him big time. I thought, man if that was Woody's boy and he was that unprepared for these 2 radio clowns we are in for a bumpy ride.

If the Jets win it all it will be in spite of Woody.

I thought so too.

Nope. As it's been said a bunch of times, the NFL got wise to that & doesn't allow it as a means to get out of a contract. Only REAL promotions can get a coach out of a contract.

Position coach to coordinator is a promotion.

Coordinator to head coach is a promotion.

Head Coach to GM is a promotion.

Coordinator to Coordinator+AsstHC is not a promotion.

...many of you just crack me up. Didn't some of you critisize BB for putting a gag order on his coaches? Now Mangini does it and he's a fantastic human being. Can't wait 'till an actual injury report comes out...watch for Mangini to play cat and mouse with it....and I don't want to hear any complaining about it either.

Actually we are all for "one voice".

Unfortunately it's looking like while the voice is Mangini's the words will be Bradway's.

It is about time we had a head coach that showed some authority and layed down some rules. Discipline is a good thing.

this is one of the problems with mangini as HC. he has accomplished nothing as a HC and he is making the rules for people that have a much longer, more accomplished resume. it will hinder his ability to attract quality assistants and coordinators in his first couple of seasons.

Accomplishments have nothing to do with it. He is the boss and the people that work for him either follow the rules or get out. To make a new boss prove himself to underlings is counterproductive and undermines his authority.

That's life. If the people who don't like taking the orders from 35 year old don't like it, they should become a HC. If not, they should shut the hell up.

What's going on right now is a direct result of years of mismanagement and backdoor deals going to the dogs.

I hate to tell ya, but this "Gag-Order" won't stop Dinger from complaining openly if he so chooses. Such orders are utterly unenforceable, other than firing the guy, and Dinger is under no obligation to follow it in any form.

These gag-orders are followed because teh Asst's believe in the head guy. And most of the JEst staff will, likely, believe in MAngini and follow it. But don;t expect that from an angry Dinger, who I do not believe respects Mangini in any form, and feels (likely) passed over by an inferior coach and inferior football mind.

The HC can fine anyone on his staff. Though most of the time it will be done in private. Believe me Dinger does not want to make this difficult or it will end up hurting himself more than anyone else.

Do we all like our bosses - I am sure many of us might not -we still show up and work hard every day-or I hope so anyway. If he really wants to get promoted and or make more money he will take this on and do his best job
