A day off? Better give that a rest

Eric Mangini wore the kind of smirk you wouldn't want to see if you were asking your boss when you were going to get your next day off. "When we get to the point where we've made the progress that we need to make," he said, "then we'll have a day off."

On the training camp schedule distributed by the team, this coming Sunday was scheduled as a day off for the players. But it turns out that after practicing in front of the public at Giants Stadium Saturday, the team will stay in New Jersey and hold a second practice Sunday at the Meadowlands. That one is closed to the public.

That means the players' first scheduled day off is Aug. 12, the day after the preseason opener.

According to the NFL's collective-bargaining agreement, players aren't required to be given a day off before the first preseason game. After that, they must have four days off per month for the rest of the season. So although Mangini's schedule appears to be within NFL rules, don't be surprised if some veterans start grumbling.

Bottom line

Every time I look up from my hydrating fluid of choice, safety Kerry Rhodes is making a play. He has stood out more than any other defensive player.
