Parcells, Belichick share ideas, advice

IRVING, Texas - Two longtime football coaches were talking this summer about the way things used to be, back when they worked together and really pushed their players.

They lamented how much more coddling is done these days, especially in training camp. So they decided to do something about it. One said he was going back to the old way; the other said he'd do the same.

That might not seem like a remarkable tale, except that the conversation was between Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick.

And it was one of what's becoming a routine series of calls between them.

"Hey, he's a guy I think a lot of," Parcells said Tuesday. "It's a good sounding board, that's all. I'm probably using him right now more than he's using me."

The two

Bills haven't talked about each other much since Belichick left Parcells and the New York Jets behind six years ago, dissolving a succession plan that was put in writing, ruining what many thought was more than a working relationship.

Belichick has gone on to win three Super Bowls, one more than Parcells. If that alone didn't rankle the Big Tuna, then talk of Belichick winning without Parcells but Parcells never winning without Belichick probably did.

Time apparently heals everything, as might the fact that Parcells' son-in-law, Scott Pioli, is the vice president of player personnel for the New England Patriots. Whatever the reason, the lines of communication are open and the coaches who've combined to win 25 percent of the Super Bowls over the last two decades may even have each other on speed dial.

"I have talked to him say four, five times in the last month," Parcells said. "We just talk. It doesn't take long to get to the point. One of us has something to ask. We just go right to it. I called the other day and I called him back the next morning to ask him another 30-second question about something that he was doing."

Parcells said he's bouncing off Belichick things like how many players at each position should make the 53-man roster.

"He knows what my problems are," Parcells said. "He knows the whole numbers on our defense with scheme and what do we have to keep here ... offenses are similar, too. It's someone to talk to about, 'What are you going to do here?' and 'What are you thinking about there?"

One of their conversations earlier this summer was about practices. It was actually a question about Parcells' practice routine this preseason that led to his disclosure of his renewed ties to Belichick. Belichick already had spoken Tuesday and isn't scheduled to talk to reporters again until after a game Thursday night.

"I sat down with Bill Belichick this summer and we started talking about all this stuff we used to do," Parcells said. "He says, 'I used to get mad at you at the way you used to make us do this. Now I'm going to go do it.' He reminded me of a couple of things that we used to do."

Parcells said that over the years, coaches have become so concerned about players not getting injured in preseason that they've forgotten the No. 1 objective: have players ready for the season.

"Sometimes," he said, "you forget that you have to coach them hard."

The reminder seems to be working. Dallas is 3-0 for the first time since 1985 and New England is 2-1. The Cowboys have given up the fewest points in the NFL preseason, while the Patriots have scored the second-most points and allowed the third fewest.

Sure, it's only the preseason, but it's a good indication their strategy is working -- like in their days together with the New York Giants, Patriots and Jets.

"I've always run a pretty hard camp," Parcells said. "But I'd say this year's camp was harder."

It's still going on, too. The Cowboys left California on Aug. 20, yet Parcells has retained a training-camp approach. For instance, there were two practices Tuesday.

"It's definitely the most challenging camp I've been a part of," said right guard Marco Rivera, in his second season in Dallas and 11th in the NFL. "Coach keeps saying to us we're battle-hardened because of this camp. It's true. If we do the work here, the games are fun."

Parcells also is planning to shake up his schedule during the season. Players on the fringe of the roster will get less work on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays -- which means more snaps for veterans.

That's actually part of a bigger change that involves scrapping the 21st century approach of "more shorter segments, quicker work, and then on to something else," rotating the emphasis between the offense and defense.

"I'm going back to where you're going to have to stick it out," Parcells said. "I just think that helps the mental toughness of your team. That's what Bill and I really were talking about. He told me that's what he was going to do. He asked me what I've been doing and I told him, 'I'm doing the same thing as you."

So, let me get this straight. TX's constant, "aggravating" references to noodle arms and some guy named D being fat (ha!) is old and tired. Yet, Max's repetitive references to BB "stealing" money from Hess is not.

Got it.

Garb, have you forgotten what kind of message board this is? That's right, it's a Jets message board, not a Patriots message board. Which brings me to my next question. Why do Patriots fans post on a Jets message board? I mean what is it with that?

When Max references the subject for the 30,000th time , the yes we have a problem.

I know, I know.....just making a point. Let's stop this "be fair to everyone" stuff that gets thrown around. This is NOT a democracy.

I just can't stand Pats boards. Stuff like: I still think Chad Jackson will be the rookie of the year! Pats will go undefeated! This the best Patriots team ever! Willie McGinest is a POS! Branch is lazy!

I mean, really now. Some objectivity????

Wow, I found that to be a very interesting article. I thought those two were still feuding, goes to show how misleading the media can be. I wonder if Mangini was part of any of those lets toughen up training camp conversations....

Thanks for sharing Faba....

Torrance Shipman: Courtney, this is not a democracy, it's a cheerocracy. I'm sorry, but I'm overruling you.

Courtney: You are being a cheer-tator Torrance and a pain in my ass!

But in all seriousness, Willie is a POS.

But in all seriousness, Willie is a POS.

Why's that?

He was a huge part of your teams success. You guys sh*t on every player that leaves and take them for granted because you think Belichick can replace anyone.

Hell, you could even argue that you guys wouldn't have even won a single SuperBowl if it wasn't for Vinatieri. He was a massive part of your success. But as soon as he leaves what do you guys say? "Oh, he's just a kicker" or "Any kicker could make the kicks that Adam made" but when he was with you guys he was known as the best PK of all time.

You Pats fans always call us delusional but in reality your some of the most homer, delusional fans on the face of the earth. You guys act like the Pats can do no wrong and will win a championship year after year.

Newsflash, you're not the defending champions anymore. The last game you guys played that meant anything you got your asses handed to you by Denver and Brady looked like a deer caught in the headlights.

Willie McGinest will be missed. He was a clutch player on the field and true, veteran leader in the lockerroom.

David Givens wil be missed. He was a clutch player on the field and a true #2.

Deion Branch IS missed. Please read my numerous posts on the subject.

Adam Vinatieri will be missed too. For obvious reasons. That kick in the snow to tie the game against the Raiders was one of the greatest sports moments I have ever witnessed in my life. But man, does it stick in my craw when people constantly give AV all the credit for the SB victories. Last time I checked, it took a field general - Tom Brady - to march the team down into FG territory. Because of this.....opposing fans giving Adam all the credit....I have ill feelings towards Adams play this year. What I want is to see him choke....at Gillette....with four seconds left and the game on the line. Why? To piss you all off. ;)

He was a huge part of our team's success but the second he left, his true colors came out. He proceeded to throw just about every other defensive player under the bus for last years disaster and then proceeded to throw a fit over Seau wearing #55 even though he personally gave him permission to do so over the phone. It really makes me wonder what this guy was like in New England and Belichick just kept it all under wraps.

:soapbox:

First, we are not the only team's fans that blow smoke up a players ass until they leave. I seem to remember quite a few years worth of posts that Chad made Lav Coles. :-s

Anyways, I think alot has to do with how the player leaves. Player like Givens, who were drafted in the 7th round, and work their asses off and earn their right for a payday. More power to them. Would love for them to stay, but it is a business. Ditto Deoin. If he is traded. I will miss him, but he came into the league, after the draft pundits said the Patriots reached for him, worked his ass off and prooved all the skeptics wrong.

Then there are players like Willie, Ty and AV. All Patriots' icons. No doubt. Unlike the two players above, they were rewarded quite well while playing in New England since the mid-90s. Willie and Ty were both receipients of the albatross contracts the Patriots' previous FO gave out like PEZ candy and unlike other players with similar contracts. They earned most if not all of their 50+ million contracts. Even AV was the receipient of unusual FO movements in regards to his contracts. Very few if any kickers have their contracts guranteed. AV's was on several ocassions. Now, I am not saying they should take the vet minimum, but the bottomline is they decided to leave for greener pastures. Again, more power to them, but do not expect me to wax poetic about them after they leave. Especially, when the team I have rooted for the past 2+ decades has rewarded you beyond what most players in your respective positions earn ever, and start whining about being 'wanted' and shown 'respect.' Go look at your bank accounts, you were wanted and shown respect.

I hope Willie and Ty enjoy the extra cash they got for being mercernaries in the twilight of their careers, because neither is likely to see the playoffs again. Maybe, Tedy and Tom never win a Lombardi again, but guranteed they will enjoy more post season success before they call it a career. The only thing they did, was not try to squeeze every last dime out of the FO.

It's because TX is a loser and has over 10,000 posts on several Jets message boards.
