Inside Slant

While Paul Hackett was conservative, predicable and stubborn in his ways with his West Coast offense, new coordinator Mike Heimerdinger is expected to be more dynamic.

First off, quarterback Chad Pennington will be throwing out of the shotgun a lot of the time, something he never did under Hackett but thrived on while playing his college ball at Marshall.

The Jets will try to overwhelm defenses with three and four-receiver sets and using multiple personnel formations in order to get one-on-one matchups, especially now that the Jets have acquired tight end Doug Jolley and re-acquired receiver Laveranues Coles.

"We have some progressions, but if Laveranues Coles is one-on-one and wasn't in the original progression and he has a go route, we're probably going to throw that go route to Laveranues," Heimerdinger said.

During 2002 and 2003 while the coordinator in Tennessee, Heimerdinger and the Titans proved to have one of the more prolific offenses in the NFL. During those years, the Titans produced back-to-back 3,000/1,000/1,000 yard seasons with Steve McNair throwing for more than 3,000 yards, Eddie George rushing for over 1,000 yards and Derrick Mason recording 1,000 yards receiving.

Last year, with McNair hurt, backup Billy Volek produced back-to-back 400-yard games and Mason and Drew Bennett combined for 176 catches.

Everyone is expected to be involved in the offense under Heimerdinger, with Wayne Chrebet probably getting more than the 31 catches he had last season and Jolley making around 50 catches himself. And all of this revolves around running back Curtis Martin, who's coming off a career year in which he led the NFL with 1,697 yards rushing.

Pennington is most excited because he had more options and chances to make big plays than he ever had under Hackett.

"The most obvious difference will be down the field," said Pennington, still rehabbing from offseason shoulder surgery. "Just the opportunities coach Heimerdinger will create for us. All across the board we're excited because all the skill players have a chance to do great things in the offense."

Let me go on record as saying I am all for this. That being said, Chad is going to get hurt this year.

Jay Fiedler is VERY important to the Jets chances in 2005.

Fiedler has had his own problems remaining healthy the past couple of seasons.I suspect he's lost some of the toughness he displayed earlier in his career.

Farm Boy, your avatar sux!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First, I hate Miami! :D

What's wrong with my Avatar? It isn't who you think it is! (yeaah, right!) Just a water boy from the Pats organization gettin' up on his soap box after the last Jets game. His missing tooth is from the fracas with an assistant coach! :)

I wish I could disagree with you Max but as I was reading the article I said to myself "I wonder how many games Fiedler starts with this offense" It's going to happen, I just hope he gets it done.
