Top 10 ILB's - Clark Judge - no Vilma???

Recommended Posts

1. Ray Lewis, Ravens

He's tough, relentless and plays the run and pass effectively. I haven't seen a linebacker who moves better sideline-to-sideline. He hits hard and inspires his teammates. Plus, he plays big in big games. Opponents must always account for him when they're on offense, and that's a mark of a special player.

2. James Farrior, Steelers

He finished second to Baltimore's Ed Reed in the Defensive Player of the Year voting, and for good reason: Farrior had a career season, making his first All-Pro team and leading the Steelers to the No. 1 ranking in team defense. He's an above average tackler, strong at the point of attack and good in coverage. In short, he has it all.

3. Al Wilson, Broncos

The club's co-captain on defense, Wilson leads by example. He ranked second on the club in tackles; had 2.5 sacks; intercepted two passes and forced two fumbles. He's relentless, physical and consistent and one of the reasons Denver hopes to move forward in the defensive standings this year.

4. Keith Brooking, Falcons

He's a rock-solid, productive player who hasn't missed a start the past four seasons. A four-time Pro Bowl choice, Brooking has exceeded 100 tackles in each of the last four years and had a career-high 2.5 sacks and three interceptions last season.

5. Antonio Pierce, Giants

The Giants scored a coup when they signed him away from Washington. Pierce does a great job of shooting the gaps and rarely misses when he has a chance for a tackle. In his first year as a starter last season he had 112 tackles and two interceptions -- numbers that made the Giants pay big bucks for him once he hit the open market.

6. Brian Urlacher, Bears

There are times when he looks like the complete player, but his performances aren't as consistent as you'd like. Nevertheless, the guy's a marvelous athlete who produced 100 or more tackles in his first four years and has the ability to drop into coverage.

7. Zach Thomas, Dolphins

Some scouts consider him one of the game's most overrated players, but you can't ignore his penchant for making plays. OK, so the defense is arranged that way, but Thomas produces -- with at least 145 tackles in each of his past four year. Plus, the Dolphins leave him on the field on third downs, a sign of how valuable he is.

8. Nick Barnett, Packers

He has size, mobility and quickness and runs to the perimeter as well as anyone at the position. Plus, he's terrific at taking on blockers aimed at him, using his hands and feet to steer clear of offensive linemen. The results are the evidence, with Barnett making a career-high 123 tackles last year.

9. Jeremiah Trotter, Eagles

I love this guy. He leads the Eagles for three years in tackles, then leaves in a contract dispute. Two years later he's back and takes less money to return to the team. OK, so he's limited against the pass, but he's terrific in his tackle-to-tackle play. Next to Ray Lewis, he's the best run defender in that area.

10. Tedy Bruschi, Patriots

There is no physical attribute that stands out about him, but look at what he means to one of the league's toughest, most reliable defenses. Bruschi is a team leader who repeatedly makes big plays to suck the air out of opponents. He's smart, outstanding at fighting off blocks and a sure tackler. And he's an inspiration to his teammates.

Its hard to argue any of those players being top 10 - they've done it for more than one year. Another year or two and Vilma may very well be up there. Morbid thought, but hell, if Bruschi never plays again, you can argue Vilma makes that list.

Bruschi isn't even playing and Antonio Pierce doesn't deserve to be in the Top 5, hell he doesn't deserve to be in the Top 10. DJ Williams and Dunta Robinson get in the Top 10 at their spots, Vilma, THE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR ON DEFENSE, should be as well.

Oh and **** Nick Barnett.

James Farrior had been a bust his entire career until last season. 1 great season, big deal.

Antonio Pierce? Come on gimme a break. Career journeyman with 1 good season in a great system, and vilma had a better season last year anyways.

Nick Barnett looked like sh*t last year. He had 123 tackles because that defense never lost the field. And now all of a sudden tackle numbers count? I guess Sam Cowart is the greatest linebacker in Jets history!

Zach Thomas tackled like an old woman last year, he's slipping and fast.

Oh and F#ck Nick Barnett.

LOL

Nick Barnett is a monster. Top 10 material. Had a bad year because he had to carry the defense for the 2nd straight season. still had 124 tackles.

Antonio Pierce? Not a super star but a great MLB. WTF are you talking about Shane? That guy carried that top ranked skins defense. Journey man ?? he's only played for the skins. #5 ?? no way ...Id put him @ 10.

Vilma & Dj Williams should even be mentioned yet.

Where the **** is Donnie Edwards??? The guy is top 5.

Vilma = 1 Year Wonder

go take a flying leap, Tx. i am looking forward to bringing this back up during the season when Vilma is one of the cornerstones of our D and watch you come up with a typical Tx non answer to why you said something like this.

GG - Why? It is true. I like Vilma and wanted the Pats to draft him even though he is smallish for the Pats proto-type backer, but he has played only one season.

I believe he will have a long successful career, but to be top 10 after one good season? No way. I seem to remember another Jets' player that had a real good rookie, err third/first season and has been so so since.

All 125 lbs of him?

Like I said: Vilma = One Year Wonder

vilma will be a star in the league for years to come, but i can understand him being left off the list this year.

pierce is a joke as far as top 10 and i am surprised nobody said anything about zach thomas - his play has been declining for the past few years. if you asked all 32 gm's who they would rather have vilma or thomas my guess is most would go with vilma.

I'm wondering how TKO Spikes got left off the list.

Doesn't he play the strong side for Buffalo? Great LB, though. I'm still pissed the Jets let him got to Buffalo without a fight.

As for Vilma, if the Jets don't figure out the NT spot, and if Pouha can't play right off the bat, Vilma could easily disappear this season.

My bad, I only read the LB part of the title.

Vilma's talent should win out but you're right, the Jets (or any team) needs to be strong at tackle to have good ILB's.

C'mon Tx, even though you are trying to get a rise out of Jets fans, you have obviously had one too many Pabst Blue Ribbons if you seriously think he is a one year wonder. Vilma is a baller with serious talent. He will be fixture at MLB for the next 10 years, and he will make the Pro-Bowl THIS year, mark it down.

PK i was just responding to Tx's smart a$$ response that was just done as most of his posts to get a rise out of someone. I just think That Vilma had an amazing rookie year... defensive rookie of the year..and that this is the beginning and no i dont have a crystal ball, but i do have a good feeling about him.

Look, Vilma has had exactly one very good year. Let him string together a few more before you enshrine him in Canton.

And I agree, he will make the Pro Bowl this year.

if he makes the pro bowl this year..arent you concedeing that he will have two good years in a row? whats the difference between that and projecting further? think before you type and totally contradict yourself...

I'm not sure if Vilma will make the pro bowl.

With Ray Lewis a shoe in, and Farrior, Al Wilson and Zach Thomas already written in stone as great players its not gonna be easy.

If he makes big plays and helps win games, especially against the Patriots, then I think he'll make it. But that's just stating the obvious.

What makes me more mad is that a proven, almost Hall of Fame caliber ILB, Donnie Edwards isn't on that list. But what makes Clark Judge a god about these things, what makes him know anything more than the rest of us? These type of things are rarely true, and are just for some mild entertainment.
