-- McGraw Must Step Up --

Fri Jul 1, 2005

ESPN's Len Pasquarelli reports it wasn't many days into his New York Jets tenure that teammates bestowed a nickname on FS Jon McGraw, the team's second-round choice in 2002. "The Natural," they dubbed him, and with good reason. At least from a physical standpoint, the former Kansas State star was certainly the football embodiment of the baseball movie's fictional Roy Hobbs and easily passed the "eyeball test." Long and rangy, and with prototype size and movement skills, it appeared McGraw was destined for stardom. But in three seasons, McGraw has logged only eight starts, has missed 15 games to injury, posted only three interceptions and is rehabilitating from offseason groin surgery. The upshot: With a lot of young safeties on the roster, and even after the recent release of S Reggie Tongue, team officials privately concede that it's time now for McGraw to step up. For now, McGraw is listed No. 1 at free safety, teamed with second-year pro Erik Coleman, the fifth-round pick who was one of the steals of the 2004 draft. But the New York coaches also like second-year veteran S Rashad Washington and a pair or rookies, fourth-round pick S Kerry Rhodes of Louisville and fifth-rounder S Andre Maddox from North Carolina State. McGraw needs to first prove he can stay healthy then demonstrate he can make plays

If McGraw sprains his toe in camp, Bradway will have his walking papers pre-printed. Maybe Jon can hook up with Scott Frost and start a Sucky White Safety academy.

LOL!!

I have to agree with the premise of this column ... McGraw is a very talented player who can really excell if he ever stays healthy for more than five minutes at a time ... but that has become a "BIG IF" with Jon McGraw

He can go either way.

Scott Frost or Gary Fencik/John Lynch.

Imho, he is too fragile to play football. He breaks down far too much. Our starting safeties will be Maddox and Coleman.

F Glass Joe/Jaw. He's too brittle.

Of which Derek Pagel is also a card carrying member

If he gets hurt this season he's done and I'll be the first to say good riddence. =D>
