FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A former major league baseball player is in the Broward County Jail after being arrested on suspicion of DUI and vehicular homicide.

Police said Jim Leyritz was behind the wheel of a Ford SUV that collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Southwest Seventh Avenue and Second Street in the Himmarshee area of downtown Fort Lauderdale.

The impact caused the other car to roll over and the female driver of that vehicle was ejected and she died after being taken to Broward General Medical Center, police said.

Leyritz was arrested on suspicion of DUI because he refused a Breathalyzer test, police said.

The 44-year-old is most remembered for his three-run home run off while playing for the New York Yankees against the Atlanta Braves in Game 4 of the 1996 World Series. He began his career in 1990 with the Yankees, played 11 seasons in the majors with six different teams, and retired in 2000.

Leyritz is being held on $11,000 bond. According to police records, he was booked at 4:30 a.m. Friday.

He lives in Davie, Fla./QUOTE]

That sucks for everyone involved.

That intersection is very close to a tunnel that goes under a canal or viaduct

by the intercoastal, and people go really fast going in and coming out of that tunnel. Its a very dangerous area when there is light traffic.

leyritz is a scumbag though

dudes got enough cash to take a ****ing cab!

Everyone should have cab money. There's no exuse any more for lack of cash. The $25 cab fare is a a pittance compare to the consequences.

Condolences to the victim's family.

Very sad and tragic. But everyone should wait and see what his BAC comes back at. I know when Jim was playing here in socal, he could pound down an impressive amount of beers after games. He was fun to run into at bars . That being said, if he was drunk, he needs to do some serious time. I'll never understand how these guys drink and drive. They can easily afford a cab to and from a bar.

It's innocent until proved guilty... you all really are terrible human beings.

tell that to the family of the 30 year old girl he killed.

NO...Leyritz is a terrible human being. He killed someone with his car, because he is an idiot who got wasted and decided to drive home. He has a reputation of being a big boozer, and anyone who gets into an accident at 3:30 in the morning, on their birthday, smells like alcohol AND refuses a breathalyzer is guilty in my book. period.

There is no excuse for this crap. I was in the car when my brother was killed by a drunk driver who ran a light.

call a cab. get a limo. walk. get a ride from a friend who isn't drinking.

He is terrible as well, if it is hos fault they should run him over with a car going 30mph, if he lives he goes free, if he dies, he goes free as well.

You're kidding me right?

This is a terrible thing but guilty until proven innocent only applies to the court of public opinion and to people who have zero understanding of how the American justice system works apparently.

Yes, but with OUI you have to prove you are NOT drunk. You are arrested on suspicion so, technically, you are guilty until innocent. It's pretty simple; if his BAC is fine, then alcohol is not a factor. But he still was involved in an accident that killed someone so someone did something they shouldn't have and witnesses say HE ran the red light. So even if he is cleared of being drunk (unlikely), he failed to stop at a red light and plowed right into her car so he will be done there.
