REPORT DATES: Rookies July 29th, Veterans July 29th

SITE: Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY

CAMP OBJECTIVES: New offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger steps into the role formerly filled by the deposed Paul Hackett, and inherits a few concerns. First, he likely won't have the full services of quarterback Chad Pennington, who is coming off shoulder surgery. Heimerdinger must make sure new backup Jay Fiedler (Dolphins) is ready to play in case of another Pennington injury, and also needs to get Laveranues Coles (Redskins) up to speed in the receiving game. With Curtis Martin nearing his sell-by date and LaMont Jordan now a Raider, the Jets need Derrick Blaylock (Chiefs) to be ready at running back. On the line, tight end Doug Jolley (Raiders) and second-year player Adrian Jones must be ready to occupy starting positions. The defensive question marks are fewer, though Lance Legree must prove he is capable for taking over for departed nose tackle Jason Ferguson (Cowboys) and a still-sketchy cornerback situation needs to be sorted out. In light of the team's kicking woes in the 2004 postseason, second-round draft pick Mike Nugent (Ohio State) must put Herman Edwards' mind at ease with some early consistency.

PRESEASON SCHEDULE: vs. Detroit (8-12); vs. Minnesota (8/19); at N.Y. Giants (8/26); at Philadelphia (9/1)

Here are your three main camp storylines:

1) Will the Healthy Chad Pennington Please Stand Up?: Chad has an entirely new, brutally complex system to learn and an OC that doesn't tolerate pansies. If Chad is not throwing to DInger's satisfaction, having Fiedler start the season at QB is a definite possibility, whether or not Chad is 100% by the opener. Herm will whine, but Dinger will slap him in the grill.

2) Vilma Minus Ferguson Equals Trouble?

If no one out of Lance Legree, Tim McGill and Sione Pouha is capable of occupying blockers at the point of attack in Ferguson's old spot at NT, then Vilma is in for a long year. Vilma's game is NOT about taking on blockers, and if he has to do that this year because the NT position is weak look for opponents to run it like crazy on the Jets.

3) Is Nugent Going to Crack?

The kid is playing in NY (yes, even if it is the Jets), and he was brought in to replace a guy who is credited with knocking the Jets out of the playoffs last season (no, not Herm Edwards, though he's just as culpable). In short, there is a TON of pressure on Nugent to make every kick he lines up for. If he starts pressing and misses a couple early, particularly in tight games, that doubt could linger into the season where the fans will be unforgiving. Think of it this way: can anyone name the kicker that replaced Scott Norwood in Buffalo?

1) Why is everyone acting as if Jason Ferguson was a Pro-Bowl NT?? He was a decent player, nothing more. In a worse case scenario, there may be a slight drop-off in performance with the NT by committee. Lets not put Ferguson in Canton just yet (to coin a Parcells phrase). Vilma and the run game will be fine.

2) Steve Christie replaced Norwood and lasted 7 or 8 years in Buffalo

good point...i liked fergy but alot of people are givin him too much hype...i think legree and pouha will be plenty good enough to replace him..

Fergy wasn't great at all, of course, but his ability to hold up the OL at the point of attack is huge and not something that is easily replaced. It's a fine art being able to take on the center and guard and stand them up.

That's so true.

Pretty tough for a 200lb MLB taking on blockers, pushing them aside and making the tackle at the LOS.

Vilma will lead the Jets in tackles next season.

Unfortunately, 75% of them will be 7 yards downfield. #-o

You talk as if the Jets defense will take a step backwards next year. There is no reason to believe that.

Year 2 in the regime will get better. I am sure Donnie feels there are things he can do better and will work towards correcting them.

I think between McGill, Pouha and Legree he'll have enough bodies to throw at the NT position to avoid a huge 2002 Patriots-type defensive collapse, which was so well illustrated by RichardSeymour at one point. But still, it's a huge concern. Legree is really a DE playing DT, Pouha is big but might not be physically ready for the punishment he will take and McGill, while he thrived in NFLE, will be in a different world in the NFL. He wasn't exactly taking on Alan Faneca and John Hannah over there.

I'm not saying that at all.

The Jets have all the pieces in place to have another very good defensive team this year.

TS made an excellent point about Fergy's role in allowing Vilma to pretty much roam free.

I happen to agree with his comment that if Vilma has to start shedding more blockers this year, his productivity MAY slip a bit.

Vilma's strength is attacking the ball. That is much easier done when nothing is in your way.

And again, by no means am I saying the overall defense will take a step backwards this year. They are too strong of a unit.

Once again, Ferguson is a good player, but far from irreplaceable. No Ferguson = No problem! = Vilma goes to the Pro Bowl this year

I remember nearly every jets site wanting the Jets to cut loose Ferguson after the 2003 season he had as our NT.

Cowboys think they will have success as Fergy playing a 3-4 nose tackle? KEEP DREAMING

And will people stop acting like Fergy was some 400lb run stuffing garbage pale machine? The guy was 305lbs. Thats 10lbs less than Drob.

And I couldn't believe this report I read a week ago. Saying something like "With Ferugson gone, 3rd year player Dewayne Robertson better get ready to see double teams"

HELLLOOOOO DUMBASS!!!! DID YOU WATCH ANY JETS GAMES LAST YEAR? YOU FRICKIN IDIOT. ROBERTSON WAS ALWAYS DOUBLE TEAMED AND FERGY WAS ALWAYS LEFT 1 ON 1.

That comment was so stupid, it really pissed me off.

Ferguson, all he did last year was make tackles 2 yards downfield. He started off hot in the beginning as a pass rusher, but did nothing much after that. Totally overrated and overpaid.

McGill, Pouha and Legree will easily outperform what Ferguson did last year. What a damn joke. Ferguson was an average DT his entire career, so once we lose him to free agency, all of a sudden he is Warren Sapp.

Cut the sh*t, he's was an average player.

I think it was foxsports.com

Anyways, that was I think the dumbest comment I've read about the football on a legit news source website in a looong time. Some people, I don't know how they get their jobs in what they do.
