Abraham retires/Jets trade for Hunter

Donnie Abraham By Dan Leberfeld

Date: Jul 14, 2005

Jets cornerback Donnie Abraham has decided to retire.

The veteran cornerback was mulling retirement this off-season, and missed a big chunk of the Jets off-season program.

But Jets coach Herman Edwards talked him into coming back briefly. He attended the team's June OTA's.

But after further thought, Abraham has decided to end his career after 10 years in the NFL.

This decision led the Jets to send an undisclosed late round draft pick to the Dallas Cowboys for cornerback Pete Hunter. This trade will be official if he passes a physical on Tuesday.

The Jets have expressed some interest in free agent cornerback Ty Law, but right now he is out of their price range.

I've never seen Pete Hunter play but he sounds like a big man with a GREAT size/speed ratio. I read he runs a sub 4.3 and he's also 6'2 208lbs. And he is much younger than Mickens. Hunter is 25 years old.

Donnie Abraham sucked, imo. Not quick enough to play nickel and too slow to play outside.

Pete Hunter is toast waiting to happen on every pass play. Still, I like adding an athlete of his size and speed if only to play on specials.

Good luck to Donnie, as well. I've always ripped him as much as I possibly could because of his Herm affiliation, but he wasn't a bad player for us and made some huge plays when it counted. Apparently Donnie has some personal/family issues that he's working out, so I wish him the best.

Cowboys To Deal Cornerback To Jets For Future Pick

By Rob Phillips

IRVING, Texas - Cornerback Pete Hunter wanted a chance to compete for a starting job. It appears he will get his wish.

The Cowboys are expected as early as Thursday to trade Hunter to the New York Jets for a late-round draft choice in either 2006 or 2007. Hunter's performance will determine the compensation.

Hunter, who was expected to meet with Jets officials in New York on Thursday and take a physical, had signed his one-year minimum tender with the Cowboys for $656,000 as a restricted free agent.

A former fifth-round pick by the Cowboys in 2002, Hunter won the starting job at right corner last year in training camp but tore his right anterior cruciate ligament in Week Three at Washington and was placed on injured reserve. The Cowboys cycled through three different starters on the right side but never found a permanent replacement.

Hunter is back at full strength after rehabbing his knee for the past nine months. But the Cowboys' cornerback situation is substantially more competitive now than it was when he got injured last September, making Hunter expendable.

After being criticized for not addressing cornerback in free agency last year, the Cowboys made an early splash this off-season by signing former Browns starter Anthony Henry to a five-year, $25 million deal, which included a $10 million bonus. They further improved their depth by signing 12-year veteran Aaron Glenn, who played for Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells as a member of the Jets.

Henry is expected to start at right corner this season alongside Terence Newman, with Glenn to step in as the nickel corner. That would have left Hunter competing for a backup spot with Lance Frazier, who started eight games last year, and 2004 seventh-round picks Jacques Reeves and Nate Jones.

Parcells reportedly approached Hunter about moving to free safety, where the Cowboys are looking to fill the void left by Darren Woodson's retirement. Reports claimed that Hunter balked at the idea and insisted on competing for a starting job at corner. Trade rumors swirled that the Jets were interested in trading veteran corner Ray Mickens to the Cowboys for Hunter, but Jets management claimed the trade had never been discussed.

But Hunter put all the rumors to rest during the Cowboys' three-day mini-camp in May, claiming he would play "wherever they need me to." Parcells said he had no intentions of moving Hunter to safety, but he might consider using him there in nickel situations.

A native of Atlantic City, N.J., Hunter played safety in college at Virginia Union but should have an opportunity to start for the Jets. He had 55 tackles, 3 interceptions and one sack in three seasons as a corner for the Cowboys.

With Hunter gone, Reeves, Jones and Frazier will compete for backup spots behind Newman and the Cowboys pair of free-agent signees. Hunter's impending departure also means only three players now remain from the 2002 draft - Roy Williams, Andre Gurode and Tyson Walter.

This is from the cowboys web-site . Hunter has good size for CB but I was not that impressed with him the couple of times I saw him play for the Cowboys- by the way my one of my best friend's is a Cowboy fan so I have watched Hunter play

Well i guess that means I need to get a new Jets jersey for this season. #-o

Derrick Strait ?

The opportunity is there for Strait - it is good to have a lot of competition going into training camp- we have a lot of young guys there to battle for spots in the secondary
