Supplemental draft--Dolphins make the only pick....

The Miami Dolphins selected USC DT Manuel Wright in the 5th round of the NFL's Supplemental Draft today. Wright was expected to be drafted higher--perhaps the 3rd or 4th round based on a unique size/speed ratio he possess--but dropped due to character and conditioning issues that surfaced prior to the Supplemental Draft.

With DT's Larry Chester and Tim Bowens facing injury issues, Wright could garner siginificant playing time with the Dolphins if he shows up healthy and hungry to paly. The Dolphins are expected to employ the base 3-4 defense this upcoming season.

Wayne Chrebet look alike--except with 4.4 speed--Agim Shabaj of Michigan State and UNLV CB Charles Ealy went undrafted, but are expected to sign free agent deals and should at least make some teams practice squad for the upcoming season. Shabaj, a former high school superstar never lived up to his prep hype, but has solid hands, good speed and can return punts and kicks. Ealy caught the attention of NFL teams due to his size and speed, but is very raw.

Vinny Cirrinicione, from Paesane's Pizzaria in Albany, New York, also went undrafted. The 22 year old kicker displayed significant leg strength in AFL2 last season, once nailing a 56 yard field goal through the leagues 9 yard wide goal posts (NFL goal posts are 18 yards).

Former Kansas City Royals (baseball) superbust Roscoe Crosby also went undrafted, despite significant over-hype from ESPN and various Net draft sites.

Mississippii RB Vashon Pearson, Toledo TE Jerome Walker and CB's Ivory McCann of Texas Tech and Hiram Eugene of Louisiana Tech also went undrafted and are seen as greater longshots.

Note to Maxman and TS: I typed the above text in the last 10 minutes (not and paste), so feel free to add this to page one--if you wish.

Thanks for the info R44- good to see you here -been a while since you have been here

Miami has nothing to lose with Wright really- take a chance that he can with experience and hard work make it

Shabaj reminds me of the guy from Hawaii Chad Owens that graduated- small but quick

Thanks faba...It has been awhile since I last posted anywhere. Glad to comeback....

Wright was a good 5th rounder...Teams tend to be very conservative in the Supplemental Draft. For every reason one could give for Wright being a high pick (i.e size/speed ratio), one could put forth reasons to suggest why teams should be leery of him (i.e poor work ethic, conditioning).

So, 4th or 5th round seems viable for him. Dolphins did OK. Plus, Saban is basically tearing down the team and rebuilding with youngsters, so Wright is another in that mix.

The Chad Owens reference might be better than Wayne Chrebet, as, like Owens, Shabaj returns punts. Chrebet never has. On DD.com, I compared him to former Supplemental Draft free agent Brad Pyatt, a speedy returner/WR who has been a Colt for 2 seasons.

BTY, for anyone wondering, we reported at DD.com, that Agim Shabij is the son of Albanian/Yugoslovian immigrants--hence the unique surname.

That's true. You run into Agim's all the time, but very few Shabij's in these parts. :?

Anyway... I wouldn't mind taking a long look at Crosby or Ealy as potential practice squad guys. Both guys have tools, but are extremely raw. Both play positions we could use help at.

Shabij might get a shot on a roster as a return man. Maybe a better shot than any of these guys to be earning NFL minimum coin come September. The Jets aren't in a position to take on such a specialist. They have room for a taxi project, though.

Good info Slats, thanks...I meant to write Shabaj (I spelled his name wrong)...but as you wrote, that's a unique name.

At DD.com we are reporting Crosby has already been signed:

Pete Yanity, of News Channel 7 Sports (WSPA.com), reports the Indianapolis Colts have signed free agent WR Roscoe Crosby to a multi-year contract. No financial terms were disclosed.

Thanks Rigs, I will put this up tonight. Awesome.

And the Colts gave Crosby a MULTI-YEAR deal? Wow. Especially for a guy, as you've documented, has been completely unreliable. They must think that the chance to catch passes from Peyton Manning is enough of a carrot to keep him in line.

As for Wright, I can't believe how bad he's being ripped today. I saw on PFW.com that he quit on every drill, had fat ankles, benched 14 times, had zero technique...yadda yadda yadda. Brutal stuff. Saban is bringing some of that NCAA swagger to the Dolphins it looks like--taking kids that he thinks he can mold in 2-3 seasons.

Thanks TS....I think with Harrison, Stokely, Wayne, Walters, Pyatt and maybe former Purdue WR J. Standeford on board with the Colts, Crosby has an extreme uphill climb. Perhaps he's being signed with the understanding that he'll be placed on the practice squad?

He really ran about 4.5 in the 40 in workouts (until he quit due to cramps) and is only about 6'1", so you wonder about all the accolades ESPN was throwing his way--mix of Ken Griffey and Randy Moss? :^o

Wright is definitely a boom or bust sort. The Dolphins are such a rebuilding mode, don't be suprised to see them peddle off vets for mid-rounders, so they can take the risk...and as you pointed out, he's gonna be a risk.

Rigs, while you're here there's a question I've been debating up here in Big East (Cuse) country. Louisville is coming in to the BE when it's at its weakest in years. Even if Brian Brohm throws for 500 yards per game (very possible against alot of these BE teams) do you think that Heisman people will treat his soon to be huge numbers as though he got them in the Mountain West? I think Louisville is going to get killed in the polls because of the Big East, and it got me thinking about Brohm.

TS, with LaFors out of the picture, Brohm could be amazing.....Him and Erik Ainge, both sophmores, look like almost certain NFL top prospects. It's just a matter of time and staying healthy for both.

Yes, I think Louisville will get smoked due to a "down Big East".....Talent level just isn't really there and that will be seen as a negative for Brohm and company. The Mountian West reference is outstanding--kind of like Utah and Boise State (WAC) in 2004...Great seasons, but who took them seriously?

For our draft blog back in mid June**, I looked at the seniors in each Conference by position....For the ACC, Big 10, Big 12, SEC and Pac 10, I had agonize over which seniors to cut--a ton of top prospects...In the Big East (Blog june 19th), I had to grope in the darkness for players to fill out a some starting senior offense and defense spots...The senior DB's in the Big East look solid, but where are the D-Lineman and the linebackers (Note: H.B Blades of Pitt is a junior and a top LB)

Pitt--could be a good team, they have just about all their starters back, and have some potential superstars--Palko, Greg Lee, Blades, ect....Expect them to be good.

Louisville--Best group of talent in the Big East....O-lineman Spitz and Leffew could both be NFL picks...Brohm,Bush and some terrific WR's will mean they score a zillion poiunts per game.

UConn--Has some decent offensive talent (Brockington, Murray, ect), but no QB and will have to rebuild their line...Thge defense lost all it's stars, so they'll be down.

West Virginia--Has real good talent in the secondary, but doesn't seem like a top team on the national level.

Rutgers--Clark Harris and Brian Leonard are top juniors (seniors academically) and they have talent...But aren't they still Rutgers, until proven otherwise?

Syracuse--Good talent; potential big time coach, but who's gonna be the QB? Like Nebraska in 2004, will they struggle bringing their 1970's offense into modern day football?

Cinncinati--Opposite of Pitt: Pitt returns like 18 of 22 starters; Bearcats lose just all their starters--they'll stink, barring a miracle.

Southern Florida--Outside RB Andre Hall, they'll bring nothing to the Big East...
