***JETS SIGN CALVIN PACE - 6 YEARS / $42M ***

The guy is making $7 million a year and $22 million in guaranteed money. He better be a LOT more than an upgrade over Hobson.

This is just nuts. I can't believe most of you are happy about this. And I have watched the Cardinals plenty over the past few years (fantasy football will make you do weird ****) and never once have I noticed this guy.

I saw someone earlier in this thread, maybe Sperm, say that Pace was once a top prospect, but that's not even true. IIRC, he was a projected 3rd-4th rounder that the Cardinals made an absolutely ridiculous 1st round reach on. I don't get what it is about this guy...he makes teams do completely ****ing stupid things to acquire his mediocre services.

I'm not really happy about the move I'm just not going nuts about it yet. Fact is the Jets needed more than one OLB and Pace was one of the few guys left who fit Mangini's system.

Did they overpay the sh*t out of Pace? Yes, but look at free agency this off-season. Everyone is getting overpaid. Bernard Berrian, a decent at best #2 receiver, is getting $7 mil a year. Justin Smith got $45 mil from the 49ers after he had like 2 sacks last season and he doesn't even fit their scheme. Gibril Wilson, a f_cking middle of the road safety, got $40 million from the Raiders.

No matter who the Jets got this off-season they were going to pay big bucks. If the Jets don't make this move they have to use their 1st and 2nd round picks on OLB's or they risk having a sh*tty front 7 next season. This move at least gives the Jets some flex in the draft. Maybe they can draft McFadden now or trade the #6 pick for Derek Anderson or use the round 2 pick on Cherilus.

Let's me just say this...Pace when he got stood up last yr showed he can be a great OLB in the 3-4

Reading through this thread I have to laugh. He's 5x's a better player than Bryan Thomas...and he will make believers out of all of you by week 2.

Great signing. You have to overpay to get the players you want. We all saw what trying to force players into a system looks like. Lets try this.

I have been following Calvin Pace for a while, he went to one of my rival HS in North Carolina (Charlotte Latin) and I got to watch him in HS and then went to Wake Forrest and I attended Elon University (only about 20 miles away) the guy is a stud (when played the right way) He has fluid hips and sheds blockers nice. He is better at going forward than he is in coverage, but the 3-4 is ideal for him, he has the size, strength, and agility to play the pass rush specialist in the 3-4. Parcells is the best at finding that type of player and if he wanted Pace badly than I cant blame the FO for making sure he is in Green and White come next season. Had an injury after a car accident in Arz and didnt play a lot his second year. but when they switched to the 3-4 they went back to Pace and he showed up. I think he will be worth the money, but lets face it we went 4-12 and need to overpay good players to come here. Hopefully after next season we wont have to.

Signing Calvin Pace was a must for this team, while we probably overpaid you have to look at what he did in the second half of last season. He had 98 tackles and 6.5 sacks last year, 5.5 sacks and 70+ tackles came after week 7 when he adjusted to the 3-4. This is guy who is finally comfortable in a system and now gets to play it all year every year. I do not think he will be bust, plus it allows us to move bryan thomas back to the strongside where he was a stud in 06. Pace plays the weakside. if we do decide to draft Gholston to push BT then we have a lot of flexibility btwn the line and the linebackers.

All of the moves so far lead me to believe that we are going with DMC in the draft though. We have sured up our Oline and Dline and now need a dynamic playmaker, i say its DMC at 6 if he is there and then much like last year, only expect Tangini to select about 3 players in the first 4 rounds. They want quality over quantity.

I would be extremely happy about the pick if I had actually seen more of pace play. My excitement comes from the following; mangini and his staff have been good talent evaluators as of now, parcells clearly wanted the guy and he is a proven talent evaluator and the official contract hasn't come out yet. If there is anything i am certain of, it's tannenbaum's cap smarts; he's not someone to make a contract without loopholes etc.

The second thing i've notice a lot on here with the naysayers is that they don't like the idea of shelling out huge money for an unproven player, but they are dying to draft gholston. Pace has played half a year in the 34, which isn't a whole lot of experience, but more than gholston. I know gholston is a physical freak, but he has proven nothing in the NFL and if we gave him the same contract as last years #6 pick it would be five-year, $41.5 million contract, including $17.5 million in guarantees. As much as i like gholston, his contract wouldn't be that far off from pace's new contract. I'm not saying your wrong to be worried, just that in perspective gholston would have been close to the highest paid linebacker without any experience. *I personally think that's more than nfls fault with doling out all this guaranteed money to nonproven players, but whatever.

So the Strongside is considered the side in witch the OLB is rushing the blindside of most Quarterbacks (right handed throwers)? I thought that was the Weakside.

You were right, it is the weak side. The will backer plays on the weak side and i'm pretty sure that thomas will still say as the same backer, but i have no idea who will be playing where.
