7 Days to Camp

07/21/05

The real countdown has begun. Today marks exactly one week until we will report for training camp. Guys have been popping up around the complex this week as everyone slowly begins to trickle back to Long Island. For me and my family, we have been around all summer. My kids have been in day camp, and I've been busy working out. Anticipation is getting higher the closer we get to camp. The rumors, who's going to be in camp and who's not, what expectations are, etc are all coming out. Vilma has recently said anything less than the Super Bowl would be unacceptable....I agree. You can't go into camp thinking you won't be one of the only 2 teams left in February...if so, you may as well not come to camp! In other news, Teddy Bruschi said he will not play this season. I'm sure it was a tough call for him, as he is such a great competitor...he's the type of guy I enjoy playing against...he plays hard every down, and has fun doing it! Prayerfully he will have a complete recovery and return to the field in 2006. This will be my last post until camp begins, then I will probably have real stuff to write about! God Bless

For a player with only one year in the league, Vilma has a pretty big fly trap.

You just know this guy will shoot off his big mouth and piss off some veterans and Hermy and also give some opposing teams some great bulletin board material.

Just watch.

Bren, are you going to camp on July 30th? I need a ride, and I'll pay the tolls.

Otherwise I'll take the LIRR boozer express.

This guy better be careful. Herm made the playoffs in three out of his first four years and has won "alot of games," as Herm likes to say. Is that not enough for Vilma? I mean, getting to the Super Bowl is NICE, but it's no playoffs in three out of four.

Where you the author of that Manning/Brady article?

The TomShane Standard of Excellence:

Championship: The ONLY goal

Playoffs: Useless

Individual Records: Useless

If you are not playing to win rings, then leave. If you do not win a championship you should not be allowed in any Hall of Fame.

Abraham was a loser cause he picked Pitt to win the Super Bowl..Vilma has a big fly trap cause he expects to win the Super Bowl...you really are losing your touch Tx, getting kinda borish actually

When you speak with both cheeks wide open, the stink is much worse.

You complain that the Herm lovers are just happy with making the playoffs. Here comes a kid and says that this is NOT acceptable. The franchise should have much higher goals. And you blast him for it.

Cmon man, that is just weak and you know it. Vilma is SMART. He will not be a bulletin board kind of guy. He handles the media like Jeter does. Says the right thing, it is about the team...about winning...blah blah blah.

If you think like a winner, you have a chance.

If you think you might lose, then you have lost already.

I'm sure that Mumbles preaches the same thing, with the exception that no one understands what the F he is saying.

You know what? F that. We NEED more swagger on this team. I HOPE Vilma ends up on bulletin boards. You think Ray Lewis is worried about ending up on a bulletin board? You think Rodney Harrison worries about it? No. But what, because they're the Jets they should clam up and act like they're just happy to win a game? F that. Someone needs a set of balls on this team.

I am sure PatsfanTx was stirring the pot again- he is too smart - any player or coach's goal should always be to win it all and do everything possible to accomplish that with the necessary sacrifice- calling Abe to join the club

First off, you folks know I am a huge Vilma fan.

He had a great year last season and he will only get better. No doubt about it.

But I still stand by my post. How many one-year players go say stuff like that? It's no knock on him, and maybe Hermy can learn a thing or two.

And BTW, where can I find Vince Wilfork's and Ben Watson's Super Bowl proclamations?

You can't have it both ways.

1. You know the franchise for being stuff in the playoffs only mode

2. You knock Vilma for trying to raise the bar

You throw a lot of stuff out there. You got called on this one. It is okay man. We still have the same amount of respect for you!

You are missing my point entirely.

Why is a rookie with one season under his belt the one who is trying to "raise the bar"?

Where is all the veteran leadership on the Jets?

Hermy? PennyBoy? Johnny Abe? Chrebet?

And good for Vilma, now he just needs to back up his words.

2 things here Tx:

1. vilma/ellis are the leaders of the defense. vilma is a charasmatic guy who is used to leading men. i have no problem w/him openning his mouth as long as he backs it up - which he has his entire life.

2. isn't vinatieri one of the most outspoken Pats? correct me if i am wrong but i though he was a kicker. i'll take comments from the starting MLB over a kicker any day of the week. at least vilma will be on the field for more than 5 plays a game.

You are off man. And you know it. You are now changing your point.

Vilma was drafted by a team that hadn't won it all in almost 40 years. There are problems with the franchise. Lacking veteran leadership certainly being one of those problems.

Good for Vilma for looking at thing differently!

Block, that's news to me about AV being outspoken. I know he isn't a flower child who stands off in the corner, but the outspoken leaders of the Pats are definitely Harrison, McGinist, Bruschi and Brady.

Its actually a great point, Tex. There is and was a huge leadership void on this team. Chad's position as leader is compromised because of his injuries. I think players believe in him, but he's come very close a few times to sounding less like a leader and more like a Gary Carter-esque media liason shill for Jet management propaganda. Ellis is a leader by example but doesn't strike me as the type to grab a teammate by the neck and throw him into a locker for slacking. Thus, Vilma.

Let someone that actually lives in the Boston area set the record straight.

AV as outspoken leader is laughable. The boy is quite good at towing teh company line.

Tom Brady is THE leader of the - but outspoken and a source of blackboard material? Laughable.

Bruschi - a vocal leader, but very respectful

McGinest - a leader, outspoken, sly - but not a bulletin board source either.

Harrison - he'll tell you to wipe the smirk off your face and if you don't, he'll wipe it off for you. He never starts the war of the worlds, but he'll end it.
