Steelers' Staley to undergo MRI on sore knee

NFL.com wire reports

LATROBE, Pa. (Aug. 6, 2005) -- The Pittsburgh Steelers ' two-man running back rotation was missing both of its main components in practice Aug. 6, and Duce Staley 's sore right knee is becoming a concern.

Staley missed most of the second half of last season with a sore right hamstring -- allowing Jerome Bettis to nearly get another 1,000-yard season -- and he has sat out all but one full day of training camp contact work because of the aching knee.

After insisting for several days that the injury wasn't a worry, coach Bill Cowher said Staley will undergo an MRI test Aug. 7 to make sure there's nothing wrong.

"We'll kind of go from there, see where he's at," Cowher said. "He still doesn't feel real comfortable."

Staley needed fluid drained off the knee after just one day of practice, a condition that sometimes can indicate a problem that requires arthroscopic surgery. With the regular season more than a month away, Staley has enough time to have an operation and still be ready for the Sept. 11 opener against Tennessee.

"We're going to be very proactive, make sure if there's any problems to get them taken care of now because we want him ready to go for the first game," Cowher said.

Bettis, who finished up last season with a minor quadriceps tear, also sat out the practice, mostly just so he would have two days off in a row before a full week of camp.

Staley took part in some light running, but skipped the goal-line drill Cowher traditionally uses to wrap up the first week of camp.

Alot of us Steelers fans are hoping Willie Parker gets a shot. He's a bit small but he's a homerun hitter type threat and better reciever than the Bus or Duce. Ben is partial to him as well, he'd make a good first down check down target for Ben. Ya heard it here first, this kid will get some serious PT in the near future. =D>

Willie is a decent back and I would love to see him play alot in the NFL. He had some time here with UNC where he played and he looked pretty good.

2004 Undrafted rookie Willie Parker showed speed and quickness at North Carolina and earned the reputation of a weight room warrior during his career there. His senior season saw him rushing for 181 yards in nine games for a 3.8-yard average over 48 carries. He also caught 7 passes for 28 yards. He was second on the team for rushing his junior year with 70 carries for 236 yards and a touchdown. Parker also caught 12 passes for 104 yards that season. He totaled 1,172 career yards rushing.

Dick Hoak (our RB coach) has been raving about the kid. He really has paid his dues by taking whats given to him and making the most of it (mostly ST work) and mastering the playbook and by practicing his butt off. If the O-line holds up, i look for our running game to be as dominant as last year.

The big question is can Ben avoid the so-called sophomore slump. If he does, the Steelers will put up a ton of points this year. It's pretty clear that Ben has been handed the reigns. :D

Enjoy having him on your team. He probably won't be a HOF player or be a superstar, but will play hard and be a team-oriented type guy.

Thats the type of guy that i can easily root for bro. It's fun to watch some of these undrafted guys work their asses off in camp and earn themselves a spot.

I totally agree. I was rooting for Dexter Reid to also get some playing time and do well, even though he is with the Pats. Always like to see the local guys do good.

Willie and Dexter are both very nice guys. I remember Willie saying something at the meet and greet with the team 2 years ago about not being sure if he would want to play pro ball, but gladly it turned out otherwise.
