With the signing of Ty Law all but final, the Jets released veteran cornerback Ray Mickens this morning.

"They let me go this morning," Mickens told Newsday as he loaded his car at the team's dorm at Hofstra. "Herm (Edwards) called me in and told me. We'll see what's next."

Mickens, who has played every down of his 9-year career with the Jets, was too upset to discuss the matter further.

After a long career as one of the league's top nickelbacks, Mickens had been projected to start at left cornerback before the Jets agreed to terms with Law, a four-time Pro-Bowler and three-time Super Bowl champion.

Law's multiyear deal, by far the biggest acquisition of the Terry Bradway-Edwards era, is expected to be announced today.

With Mickens gone, second-year cornerback Derrick Strait is expected to take his place as the nickleback.

I'm very sad to see him go. He had a great run with the Jets. I wish him success in the future with whatever team he lands with.

This was no surprise with Ty Law coming in- Ray will catch on with some team but there was no place for him with us. Hunter can play on special teams which increases his value also to the team

Didn't Mickens say earlier this summer that he wanted to finish his career in Dallas ? Or was that Aaron Glenn.

Tough deal for Mickens. Feel bad for him but he will end up playing somewhere and my guess is that either Parcells or BB will be making a phone call real soon if they haven't already.

i guess that means strait is playing nickel this year, good for him.

i feel bad for mickens - but this one of those moves that the jets have been reluctant to make in the past (see mo lewis, marvin jones).

Good point -it is time to move on and go with the younger more athletic players in Strait and Miller -to give them some playing time. Ray was a good loyal guy but really not needed any more here

The guy was a classy player, but his height made him a crutch.

How many pass interferance calls did we all suffer through when forced to start him?

Sure he was the best nickelback in the league (In 1999!), but it's time for him to move on.

We tried to trade him for Hunter in the offseason anyway.

I have no doubt that Mickens will wind up in Dallas. Not only is the Parcells connection there, but Mickens went to school at Texas A & M.

He had a nice career as a Jet and I wish him well, but the Jets made the right decision on who to let go.
