gg
sorry if this was posted http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/ny-spmick0809,0,7325259.story?coll=ny-sports-headlines Jets cut Mickens to make room for Law August 8, 2005, 9:43 AM EDT With the signing of Ty Law all but final, the Jets released veteran cornerback Ray Mickens this morning. "They let me go this morning," Mickens told Newsday as he loaded his car at the team's dorm at Hofstra. "Herm (Edwards) called me in and told me. We'll see what's next." Mickens, who has played every down of his 9-year career with the Jets, was too upset to discuss the matter further. After a long career as one of the league's top nickelbacks, Mickens had been projected to start at left cornerback before the Jets agreed to terms with Law, a four-time Pro-Bowler and three-time Super Bowl champion. Law's multiyear deal, by far the biggest acquisition of the Terry Bradway-Edwards era, is expected to be announced today. With Mickens gone, second-year cornerback Derrick Strait is expected to take his place as the nickleback
RSJ
Mickens was a good cover man in his day. But I will not miss his dropped int's.
Scott Dierking
Mickens was a good cover man in his day. But I will not miss his dropped int's. Pound for pound, there may not have been a tougher Jet. When the Jets were going through the tackling problems, it was one Mockens who continued to hold form. His size was a detriment though. There was one particular stretch where he just had to mug WR's to get position and he had a lot of PI calls against him

nj meadowlands
Damn. We shoulda cut Pete Hunter. That guy's frickin worthless. The only reason this went down like this is because we have Strait and Miller, who the Jets want to groom NOW. But we don't have a veteran third presence and I'm not sure I like that... Why would you rather have Mickens than Hunter? He's old, short, and coming off a serious injury. He was never anything more than a mediocre #2 or a solid #3. We gave up a draft pick for Hunter. It would reach Arnie Grape levels of retardedness if we cut a guy we traded to get a month ago in order to keep a washed-up career nickel back. He'll tell you. I'd take Mickens anyday of the week over Hunter, not only because he was at one time the premiere nickel corner in the league, but also because he is experienced. I'd rather eat the 6th rounder we traded for Hunter than see him in man coverage against Brandon Stokely. GULP.

The time was right for Mickens to go. Had the Jets kept Mickens, that would have meant Strait and Miller would be riding the pine for virtually the entire season. Hunter is by no means penciled in as the nickel back. However, Mickens would have been. You've got to let go of stubborn loyalty to players and learn when it's time to get younger. Case in point, 2003.

Just because you feel bad for the guy doesn't mean it wasn't the right decision to make. Plus I'm almost positive he'll be signed to play nickel for someone else. But there is NO WAY IN HELL that he was taking Strait's spot. If so, I'd probably break his legs tonya harding style.

Wayne is a different story, even though he will be our #3 anyway because he is better at this point than Cotchery. But in losing Mickens I'm just worried about the experience, and if Derrick Strait is READY to be our #3.

I could see you being concerned if Strait had to be thrust into a starting role. However, a year of experience is more than enough to handle the nickle spot, IMO. I'd rather have an inexperienced but talent, hard-nosed, hard-working Strait in the nickle spot than a player who just doesn't have the ABILITY to play it anymore, period. It would be too easy to make one news reports saying that those teams were a possible landing place. Instead they make 32 seperate articles with one team in each.
