Jets may move from Hofstra

Tired of game-day commutes and faced with .dwindling stadium possibilities east of the Hudson River, the Jets' days being headquartered in Hempstead could be numbered.

General manager Terry Bradway said during a speaking engagement Monday night that if the team completes a deal with the Giants to share a new stadium in the Meadowlands, the Jets likely will "pull out of Hofstra" and move all of their operations to New Jersey.

Bradway said the commute from the Jets' complex to Giants Stadium on game days already is weighing on some staff members, adding some often feel as if the team is playing all 16 games as away games. The Jets have been based at Hofstra since 1974 and have held training camp there since 1968.

The team estimates that the Jets' operations in New York State contribute $10 million in taxes. Almost all of the Jets' employees and staff are based at the team's Hempstead headquarters. Including players, a team spokesman estimated the number of employees at 250 to 300.

Bradway was the keynote speaker at a Monday event at the 21 Club in Manhattan attended by about 75 members of Citibank's American Airlines-branded credit-card division.

In response to an audience question, Bradway said a stadium in Queens still remains "an option" but that he didn't know if that was "option 1 or 1A" on the Jets' list.

Ron Colangelo, the Jets' vice president of public relations, yesterday confirmed a move from Hofstra to New Jersey "would be an option we would strongly consider" if a deal is struck to co-own a stadium with the Giants. But he stressed staying in New York remains a possibility and that "everything is preliminary; all options are open at this point."

The Jets were hoping to build their own $2.2-billion stadium on Manhattan's West Side over the MTA's rail yards but a state oversight board in June failed to approve the tentative deal.

The MTA has given the Jets until Aug. 31 before the agency will formally terminate the agreement to sell the development rights to the team for $250 million. However, many observers do not think the team can make a last-ditch effort to salvage the sale, and MTA chairman Peter Kalikow has said he will entertain offers from other developers in the interim.

Steven Tisch, an executive vice president for the Giants, said yesterday that the team hopes to make as much progress as possible on wrapping up stadium issues in the four months that acting governor Richard Codey has left in office.

"The more headway we make now, with Gov. Codey being very supportive of our efforts, the better," Tisch said.

Tisch expressed cautious optimism that an agreement could be worked out between the team and developers of the nearby Xanadu complex to deal with game-day traffic and parking.

Works for me. It took me 2 hours to get to training camp a week ago and I agree that the $10 million in tax dollars should go to the state that wants tehm rather than the one that did everything to keep them from getting a new stadium. I wounder where they would go in NJ? William Patterson is close to E. Rutheford and has a big campus. =D>

its about damn time....

this way they can practice a day or 2 a week at meadowlands, players can live in NJ and staff doesnt have to travel to 'home games'...

players may still stay at hotel night before game but it will be a 30 minute drive instead of hours....

It really makes sense to have all the operating facilities in one locale- sorry GGG your training camp vacation may have to be in Jersey from now on

Not really Faba. If we held our training camp (pre-season) at the Meadowlands & the state decided to charge for parking - EVERY NFL TEAM could film us & bring their SCOUTS to EVERY PRACTICE!

Anyone remember what happened to the RAVENS a few years back because they charged?

They went from HERO to ZERO!

Cat can still go to Hostra in July - The team won't stay after August any more - that's the only change...

nah, they end all Hofstar connection. I assume they go to FDU for camp so all staff and admin can have easy commute. FDU has been used by NFL in past.

That wouldn't be too bad for me - I live about 30 minutes west of Madison!
