Gang's all for rematch with Giants

by Rich Cimini, NYDN

The Giants are talking tough about delivering payback when they meet the Jets in their annual preseason game Aug. 26. The Jets' response? Bring it on.

"I'm not going to single out any guys, but for all the guys talking stuff over there, talk is cheap," said FB B.J. Askew, one of several Jets who scuffled last Saturday in a heated practice with the Giants in Albany. "It's obvious: We're not scared."

The Giants claimed the Jets crossed the line by delivering blows in non-contact drills. "Last time I checked, football is football. The rules don't change," Kevin Mawae said yesterday. "I don't think they were ready for our tempo."

Defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson, whom Tiki Barber referred to as a "maniac," refused to engage in the trash talk. "What happened the other day, happened the other day," Henderson said. "What's the saying? What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. End of discussion."

LAW EASING IN: Newly signed CB Ty Law, working his way into shape, isn't practicing with the Jets yet. He won't play in Friday night's preseason opener against the Lions. For now, Law's main focus is conditioning. "We'll bring him along gingerly," Herm Edwards said.

Rookie Justin Miller is working at left cornerback with the starters, holding Law's spot until he's ready....WR Wayne Chrebet (hamstring) and LB Eric Barton (knee tendinitis) also won't play against the Lions. Barton will sit the entire week. No surgery is planned, Edwards said. ... Edwards' wife, Lia, was scheduled to deliver the couple's first child last night.... Jets signed RB/KR Decori Birmingham, cut recently by the Patriots.... Jay Fiedler, who will start Friday night for Chad Pennington, made several nice throws yesterday. He hit TE Doug Jolley on a deep seam, beating SS Rashad Washington.- Cimini

The Jets need to be very careful here.

I like the idea of adding a chip to your shoulder and daring people to knock it off. But, if you do that, you better be prepared for teams to challenge you. You better be ready for people to ratchet it up for you.

For YEARS, this was a club in search of an identity. Now,it looks like the Jets are trying to create their own identity.

Once you establish an identity it can carry a team through a lot of successes. Just be ready to live up to your own hype.

Great point and so true. I hope Donnie H. has this "D" in buzz-saw mode all year. Our offense will have growing pains. It'll be up to the "D" to win some games, especially early on.

Good for them.

It is about time the Jets started playing with a little bit of a chip on their shoulder.

For so many years the Giants and their fans looked down at the Jets. Well guess what. They just got punched in the mouth and more of that is coming not only to the Giants but the entire NFL.

This defense is going to be a nasty group and hopefully that attitude spreads to the rest of the Jets.

Don't wait for someone to throw the first punch. THROW IT !!!!
