Peter Boulware is expected to work out for the Ravens next week, a league source said yesterday.

The Ravens are looking to add depth at strong-side linebacker, where starter Adalius Thomas (hyperextended knee) is day-to-day and backup Dan Cody (severe knee sprain) is likely done for the season. Jarret Johnson, a backup defensive end, will start at linebacker in tomorrow's preseason opener.

Boulware, a four-time Pro Bowl player, would be a solid fit because he could rotate with Thomas at outside linebacker in the team's regular defense and play rush end opposite Terrell Suggs in passing situations.

The lingering question with Boulware is his health. Toe and knee injuries sidelined him all of last season.

When asked yesterday about his pending workout - which could occur as early as this weekend - Boulware said he had not heard anything definitive but knew the talks with the Ravens have been ongoing.

Another team that has shown interest is the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are also in need of a pass rusher. Joey Porter is out for a month with a knee injury.

"I'm not in a big hurry," Boulware said. "But I want to end up in a good situation pretty soon."

Boulware, 30, has played his entire career with the Ravens, becoming the franchise's all-time sacks leader (67 1/2 ). He was a salary-cap cut three months ago, when the sides failed to reach an agreement on a restructured contract.

"I'm open to anything," Boulware said. "I've been with the Ravens for eight years and it's a great organization. If it happens, it'd be great."

J. Lewis status

Running back Jamal Lewis will travel with the team tonight to Atlanta but will likely not play in tomorrow night's game.
