Who will be our 5th Receiver?

Not Carter! IMHO, long overdue. Davis I was rooting for and hope he sticks around for next year somehow.

Jets Waive WR Carter, LB Davis Waived/Injured

The New York Jets announced Monday that WR Jonathan Carter was waived, and that rookie linebacker Mondoe Davis was waived/injured. The announcements were made by Jets

1. Coles

2. McCareins

3. Chrebet

4. Cotchery

5. .... wow... this is a good question...i really would have put Jon Carter... but now I'm gonna have to go with Gessner... to tell you the truth though I hope it's Terrence Stubbs.

Gessner? Have you watched the games 80? He's scared, and when you're scared you are going to get hurt and be ineffective. Stubbs is a much better choice, not as good a route runner from the limited amount I have seen him but I like his hands. Either way I think someone should be holding the spot warm for Williams.

I dont see how we can only carry 4 WRs, but you never know.

Carl Kearney looked pretty good last week, maybe he has a chance.

I liked what I saw from Harry Williams. And when he is healthy, he is easily our biggest deep ball threat, more than Coles.

Who will it be then?

It depends on who gets cut elsewhere. My guess would be either Taylor Jacobs from the Redskins...Florida kid. Or John Standeford from Indy.

Someone like that...the kids here just haven't worked out. Williams would have taken the 5th spot but that injury really hurt his chances. Hopefully he still ends up on the PS because he deserves another look when he gets healthy.

williams or TB keeps 4 TE's w/both dearth and dressen making the team.

if someone gets hurt during a game they can line jolley up outside.

Thats an interesting thought - Dinger love's tossing to TE's. Avg'd 80 grabs/yr by TE's in Tennessee. J-Mac is a superb downfield blocker and Coles is alright at it. It might be whats up their sleeve.

call me crazy but i think the Jets have seen enough of Harry Williams Jr. to keep him even if he is banged up for the first couple games. Whoever they bring in at the deadline won't know the plays etc. it's questionable how much someone like Peter Warrick or Koren Robinson or whoever could contribute week 1 or 2 anyway.

Maxman, me and Bitonti spent a considerable amount of time on Standeford when we first started DD.com and we both thought he was an excellent NFL prospect.

I think if the Colts do cut him (it's 50-50 at this point), he'd be a improvement over Chas....Also, he's a former Big 10 star--we know how much Bradway loves the Big 10, right?

One of our NFL Europe "sources" has a step son that plays with him in the NFL....Word is, Standeford has everything NFL teams look for as a 4th WR type (size, speed, hands), but had serious trouble against physical CB's in 2004--was too weak.

Word is, he's improved his upper body stength and actually started the Colts last exhibition game because of injuries to Wayne and Stokely....Most think his speed is a problem, but he showed at the 2004 combine, he runs well for a big fellow (4.51 in the 40?)....

Quick inside story: Standeford was phoned by a high ranking member of the Redskins (maybe Snyder or the Gibbs) and firmly told that they were gonna pick him in the 6th round of the 2004 draft. He was told, matter factly, to gather his friends around the TV set, because the Skins would draft him in the next 5 minutes....2 minutes after, the Skins drafted a OT in that round and he went undrafted....classy organization run by Daniel Snyder

In fairness, suposedly this type of lying is common place in the NFL, as teams try to "butter up" players and sign them as free agents after the draft.

I really doubt Carl Kearney is good enough to make the 53-man. He's very good practice squad material, but he caught the ball with Georgia Southern even less than Brooks Bollinger threw it with Wisconsin. I just think that it's too soon to be giving him a roster spot.

I have followed Standeford throughout his 4 years at Purdue and if anyone remembers he was the Go-To-Guy for the better part of 4 years. He is big, very good hands, and that may counter act the fact that he may not have phenomenal speed. The Jets, as much as they need speed, they need size. Although it is said he is weak against bigger corners, how many "big corners" are covering the 4th or 5th wr on the field.

That's a good point regarding the fact that he won't face the bigger, more physical CB's as a 4th WR.

As I stated in the previous post, I think he would be bigtime improvement over a player like Gessner, if he can ever build up his body to the point he can easily beat "the jam" off the line scrimmage....As rookie, his upper-body strength was a glaring weakness.

His speed at the combine wasn's bad at all (low 4.5's), which is why most assumed he would've been drafted.

He's a nice prospect at 6' 3" or 6' 4", with speed in the low 4.5's....this is in direct contrast to Purdue WR Taylor Stubblefield, who is college football's all-time leading receiver, but is 5'10" and ran a 4.8 40 last spring

Of course, Standeford has to be cut, which isn't a given.

********

P.S: Jets want no part of Koren Robinson....I have no idea why he came out as a sophomore or why he was drafted so high. In short, he's a good, old-fashioned bust. His on-field game is almost as lacking as his off-field demeanor.

Carl Kearney is a facinating special teams player. When the Jets signed him in 2004, they pretty much said he was mostly a special teams type....So, he has chance if Westoff likes him enough, but it will be tough.

Koren is a bust. I do agree. It is just that some busts have a knack of hanging around longer then others!!!

FWIW i would rather have someone like Tom Arth, JT O sullivan or Gino Giuludi (just cut) as the 3rd QB instead of Brooks "last man standing" Bollinger.

I also saw on the releases that Walter Reyes from Syracuse Tom Shane was cut

What is the scouting report on this guy O'Sullivan from Green Bay roster R44 or Bit

Thanks Maxman....Patriots, supposedly told Villanova safety Ray Ventrone the same with the last pick of the draft this spring--you're gonna be irrelevant (nickname for the NFL's final draft pick)....Then backed away and selected an obscure D-3 TE, who is done (been cut by the Patriots and Cardinals already)...

Ventrone has actually played well for the Patriots this summer and should, at least, make a practice squad. So he amy get the last laugh on the player selected instead of him.

BTY, I agree with you on Koren Robinson...Would not be suprised in the least if the Jets or another team grabs him....Even the "super busts" get 2nd, 3rd and 4th chances.

Remember Lawrence Phillips, who's been in the news again this week? He basically ended HoF QB Steve Young's career a few seasons prematurely....

After getting like his 9th chance to prove he worth something, he decided he'd show up Steve Mariucci and not block on a blitz (he was mad that he wasn't getting many rushing attempts) and Young's career ended because Phillips man (Aneas Williams) hit Young helmet to helmet on from a 20 yard running start, totally unimpeded on a Monday Night.

Young, who had just come off best statical season prior to that 1999 hit, still harbors resitment towards Phillips privately, but won't single him out publicly...

The 49ers did single him publicly for that stupid a$$ play--cut him the next day.

Good points Bit, Gudigli has already been cut, Arth has little chance in Indy...

He's one of Peyton's best friends and a super "film study type", like Peyton. Colts want to convince him to give up football at 24 years old and become a coach for them--he still clings to the hope of playing in the NFL....Talented player (tall, athletic), but never gets a shot because he was Dave Ragone's top wide receiver in high school and was forced to go the D-3 route to play QB.

*******

Faba, the QB I love on Green Bay is Craig Nall, he'd even be worth trading for (5th rounder?), I think, from Bradway's vantage point....

Reyes probably was cut faba--to small, too fumble prone....Reyes, BTY, is Maurice Clarett's cousin and close friend (speaking of busts)

A FA RB that's made some noise is Tyson Thompson (San Jose State) of Dallas...Has outplayed draftpick Marion Barber by wide margin, supposedly. But don't think Dallas will cut a high pick for a free agent, so Thompson may be squeezed out of the picture.

*******

Speaking of Dallas Matt, did you see Justin Beriault get his a$$ kissed all night by Madden and Michaels on Monday?

He looked awesome, still fondly remember those cold March day's of me bouncing him and Considine up our DD.com safety charts, only to have you bump them back down, below the top 10

BTY, Alex Green of Duke, appearently, was cut too---out of football

Uh yeah allow me to publically declare that I will never doubt the word of the oracle again [-X

when it comes to mid round safeties you are the man Riggo - between Berault and Considine you nailed those guys from the get go - in retrospect the mid round safety we slept the most on was none other than Louisville's pride Kerry Rhodes. How ironic.

Thanks, actually, I liked Rhodes a lot and spent a lot of time on him in the blog...I thought\still think he's a much better pick than Maddox...

What confused me regarding Rhodes, was some teams projected him as a CB--so he probably slipped through the cracks at both spots, more than he should've....in retrospect, he should've been solidly ranked at safety only.

Looking back, we did a great job on the top 10 (except Shazor at #7)....The "on cusp" picks where poor, except Jim Leonard (who's playing well in Buffalo).

we should've kept Matt Giordano in the mix at the end, as we had all along...(that was a great projection, we were only ones that ranked him)...

********

Speaking of Bob Green, his newphew Sterling is a SOLID D-3 prospect from Bowie State (G.Tech transfer), so you'll be getting his E-mail soon...
