Merged: "Draftniks" weren't wrong about Clarett

When rookie running back Maurice Clarett passed up a signing bonus for contract incentives, he cost himself money and a job.

In the slot he was drafted, Clarett was entitled to receive $410,000 in signing bonus. But he rejected it, opting for $7 million worth of incentives, figuring he was good enough to earn it. Had Denver paid Clarett the money, it would have been more obligated to keep him than it is now. Now, Clarett is expected to be released if not in the Broncos' first-round of cuts, then certainly their second.

Clarett is expected to be one of the highest profile cuts in the NFL when the full cut lists become available on Aug. 30 and Sept. 4. And for now -- and events always are subject to change -- Denver has decided against placing Clarett on injured reserve, where he would have missed the coming season and had a chance to fully recover from the groin injury the running back claimed he incurred earlier this summer.

One of the biggest reasons Clarett is not expected to make it in Denver is the lack of maturity he demonstrated during the summer. He had a warped perception of his talents, thus bypassing a signing bonus for incentives. Clarett also agitated some of his teammates for a variety of reasons, not the least of which was conducting national TV interviews before he had accomplished anything on the field -- or even gotten on the field.

But just as Clarett created a buzz on draft day, he now will do the same on cut day. But with all the teams that were thought to like him on draft day -- Cleveland, Dallas, Jacksonville -- Clarett isn't expected to be out of work long. At least one is expected to claim him on waivers.

*************

When he ran a 4.9 40 (excellent for a 300 pound defensive tackle, not a tailback) at the Indy Combine, his career should've been declared over.

Shanny is a total fool for frittering away a 3rd rounder on this clown.

P.S: I doubt Cleveland touches Clarett, as this NFL.com writer states---Ohio State football is 10 times as big as the NFL in Ohio and Clarett is reviled due to his sorry attempts to get the school placed on probation.

Dallas? Parcell's already has one 1 dissappointing draft pick -- Marion Barber III -- in the fold, why go for Clarett? Particularly when San Jose State free agent Tyson Thompson looks like the best undrafted RB in the rookie class.

Maybe Arizona? :^o

What a waste of a draft pick. Let alone a Day 1 draft pick.

Marion Barber not doing too good in dallas, riggs?

EB, Barber hasn't been a total bust...But he's clearly being outplayed by undrafted rookie Tyson Thompson (who can also return kicks)...

It's the ultimate quandry for Parcells: What do you do when an undrafted player is clearly outplaying a high pick?

Keep both? Maybe?

Barber actually missed the game against Houston with a foot infection last night.

************

Dallas has had some solid rookie play--DeMarcus Ware has the look of a superstar--way better than Shawne Merriman, so far.

...OT Rob Pettiti has been insane--lost 30 pounds and has blown out all the competition at tackle...Remember, for all fat jokes Pettiti endured, he stone-cold stopped star DE's Justin Tuck Mathias Kiwinuka in 2004 ( no sacks; few tackleseach)...

Justin Beriault, who I loved prior to last draft (had him as a 3rd rounder), has a shot at starting at free safety at some point and looks like immediate help.

**********

TS, Green does love the off-field turds, but Clarett may too slow for even Green to overlook his problems.

Schafter of NFL.com is insane if he thinks an NFL team will put Clarett on their 53 man roster...or is he?...Maybe another Shanny pops up and wastes time with him too.

You almost hope that Parcells hits on those draft picks, just to let him go out swinging. I remember that you were high on Beriault and he looked pretty good in the game I was watching on NFLE.

I also saw that the Jets picked up Aaron Francisco, that BYU guy who I thought would provide some toughness. I guess getting cut in Arizona's first wave isn't exactly a high recommendation, but I'm interested to see if he sticks here.

TS, Beriault never played in NFLe--he was just drafted....I recently found out why he slipped from a 3rd type to the 5th round--he's had a slightly bum knee for a while, which forced him to sit out last night in Houston. In college he never missed a game due to the knee, but would miss practice frequently....Dallas wants to get him through the season, then do surgery.

Beriault, if healthy, could start for Dallas, but it seems the knee will be a "nagging problem" for a while, so look for either Keith Davis or Rich Coady to start at FS (by the way, Dallas has released Derek Pagel).

Fransisco is what NFL teams dub a rolodex player"....meaning the Jets are probably just bringing him in to gather some info on him to fill their rolodex card** on him, in case they need a player for the practice squad at some point...Or Bradway could eventually sign him and send him to NFL Europe.

I doubt Fransico has any shot at making the Jets 53 man roster, despite the fact that both McGraw and Maddox are gone and the team needs help at the spot.

I can, however, see the Jets bring in a better safety after more cuts...

Here's Fransico's combine #'s

Aaron Francisco FS BYU 6017 (Ht.) 211 (Wt.) 17 (reps 225 bench press) 4.80 4.82 (40 times) 35 (vertical jump) 9-5 (broad jump) 4.07 (short shuttle).

Combine average 40 at FS: 4.63 40....SS 4.72 40

Here are Kerry Rhodes FS official #'s: 6024 209 12 4.60 4.68 42 10-3 4.12

Andre Maddox SS official #'s: 6005 205 17 4.55 4.53 36 1/2 10-7 N/A

Aforementioned Justin Beriault SS (Dallas): 6026 204 14 4.61 4.61 39 1/2 11-0 3.80

That other team may be us if Derrick Blaylock keeps running like Blair Thomas.

 I really don't care for the guy but I still have this feeling he's going to have alot of people eating their words before it's all said and done.

I told some of you MORONS, who thought drafting him in the 5th or 6th round would be a good move so he could be the #3 guy here, ahhahaha, FOOLS!

Clarett is nothing. I told you all that if you can't stay healthy in 1 season of College Football then you're not going to stay healthy after 2 years off and then try to make it in the Pro's.

Clarett = Idiot and will never play in a meaningful NFL game (Regular Season)

Agreed, he's no different (except he got more carries) from the 1980's and 1990's fullbacks from Nebraska that averaged 5 or 6 yards per rush--too slow for the NFL, but ran behind great lines on dominate teams, then had to bulk-up to play fullback in the NFL or got cut (Schlesinger, Dan Alexander, the Makovica's, Lance Lewis, Judd Davies, ect).

Maurice runs a legit 4.9 40, he'd be lucky to make a CFL team as a feature back.

Thanks Maxman, but I can't use cheat sheets (official 40 times) so easily in a chat

I mean the NFLNetwork Rigs. My bad. They replayed the Cowboys pre-season game.

Those are awful numbers on Francisco. Damn.

Yea, I think Beriualt even had a Int or 2 in the first pre-season game....More I've been reading about him, the more unclear his knee problems....For Dallas, he was a good pick.

***********

Fransico is a player I followed closely throughout 2004....First off, on the field, he's a real good football player--hits hard, sure tackler. He had a ton of draft momentum, but it just "blewup" at the Combine with the back to back 4.8's....

Jamal Brimmer is the safety that was scuttled by a bad 40 time (4.9's)....Although I was always aware of Brimmers slow legs....

Clown?

Call me The Peoples Champ

What are the terms?

If Freddie Mitchell scores a touchdown against the Jets defense week 1 of the season, you win the bet and can put whatever you want in my sig and avatar (but nothing gay or overly gay)

If freddie mitchell does NOT score a touchdown against the jets defense week 1 of the season, I win the bet, and can put anything I want in your sig and avatar (But nothing gay or overly gay)

The bet lasts 1 full week until the week 2 game officially starts.

DEAL??

How about if Freddie does score then you have a picture of Freddie as both your sig and avatar and on your sig it says:

The Peoples Champ Is My Hero and if I were as gay as TomShane I'd have sex with him in a minute.

If The Peoples Champ doesn't score a TD then you can put whatever Justin MIller loving crap you want in mine.

i said this statement about a month prior to draft and i still stand by it:

"if there were 25 rounds in the NFL draft, i wouldn't waste a 25th round pick on Maurice Clarett"

further proof that some NFL Decision-makers are completely intellectually bankrupt when it comes to the draft - cmon, Mike Shanahan wasted a 3rd rounder on this bum? WTF was that guy thinking?

The egos on these guys are out of control. They think they're all Father Flanagan and their teams become Boy's Town.
