Gang Green Girl
From today's Daily News Dinner guests at Christian Wolffer's vineyard estate in Sagaponack couldn't believe their ears Saturday night. Jets owner Robert Wood (Woody) Johnson was overheard telling well-heeled attorney Michael Bush that he wants to sell his football team, our source reports. Why, after spending five years and $50 million trying to build a Manhattan stadium, would the Johnson & Johnson heir stop now? Just last week, he checked out an alternative site in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park for several hours, and he has expressed interest in building a new stadium with the Giants at the Meadowlands. He didn't return The News' calls, nor did Bush, who has reportedly repped Citigroup chairman Sandy Weill and billionaire hedge-fund manager Eddie Lampert. Johnson did tell the MTA yesterday that he is no longer interested in buying the West Side rail yard. No matter what his future with the Jets, he'll never make as big a profit as he might have in Manhattan, one knowledgeable sports source claims. And at 58, with a passion for curing the juvenile diabetes that's afflicted his daughter Casey (he's given $12 million to research), Johnson may just may want to touch down somewhere else. Wolffer did not respond to a message left on his voice-mail.

Bob
This thread contains some good comedy. The report, though, supports everything I have believed about Woody for a long time. He was only in it for the payoff. Since he can't bend us over for a no-grease rogering in Manhattan, he wants out. Any actions toward a new stadium, now, are just to increase the sale price. bitonti
Bob you are against WSS for your own reasons, and that's understandable. Imagine you are a billionare. How much does a queens or NJ stadium excite you? The answer is not at all. The West Side could have been the the jewel of the league. It could have been the greatest venue in all of sports. Queens? New Jersey? Ho Hum. No one worth billions cares about these places. If it wasn't for NYC places like Queens and New Jersey might look like upstate New York. He does own interest in the Tampa Bay Bucs (His son overlooks that interest) & I could see him pressing to move the team to the BRONX in order to eleviate the problems with building a new facility for the Yankees. They could after all build an OPEN-AIR facility on the site that is Yankee Stadium right now. Just a thought... BaumerJet
agree,, i think he envisioned a world renowned venue. Southern, none of you STILL GET IT. If (and it may be a big IF) he sells the team - he would be telling the whole world what most of us believe the exact reason he really bought the team - A REAL ESTATE INVESTMENT. Buy the team - get the MANHATTAN STADUM - make BILLIONS in real estate for the investments YOU HAVE ALREADY MADE in the HUDSON YARDS DISTRICT. The NYSCC was only a BONUS. Problem now is, NO STADIUM - a loss in potential profits - get out while this is only a small loss & not a hemorrhage! It's the way of the business world. And it may be the way of ROBERT WOOD JOHNSON III. Then again - who knows?

Scott Dierking
The enterprise system, as it is constituted in teh US is a Capitalist system. In this system, it does mean that often times teh rich have more opportunity to make more money. Obviously, they have more resources. Let's not forget, if the WSS had happened, Woody would have put far mor into that stadium, as an owner than any other NFL owner Stadium deal that I am aware of. Of course, he woudl have standed yo make a lot more money back. mThat is the idea of a capitalist society. If you think this can only happen between Woody and teh Jets, I have some sad news for you

All I am asking you to do is consider the situation from his mindset. granted that is very difficult to do but my point is that our priorities are different from woody's priorities. The guy wanted to make an impact, make a legacy. Building a stadium in Queens or New Jersey just isn't sexy.
