Dolphins trade for Thigpen

Nothing on ESPN yet, but here's a report from PFT:

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/09/29/chiefs-deal-thigpen-to-dolphins/

The Dolphins moved to improve their depth at quarterback Tuesday following Chad Pennington's season-ending shoulder injury, acquiring Tyler Thigpen from the Chiefs for an undisclosed draft pick.

Originally claimed off waivers from the Vikings in 2007, Thigpen went on to start eleven games for Herm Edwards' 2008 Chiefs, putting up a lot of passing yardage in the team's spread offense.

Thigpen became obsolete when Todd Haley took over as the head coach, falling to third on the depth chart behind Matt Cassel and Brodie Croyle.

This is the second trade between new Chiefs G.M. Scott Pioli and his father-in-law Bill Parcells; they can't complete another over the holidays this year because the trading deadline will have passed.

Thigpen will likely settle into the role of Chad Henne's primary backup in Miami, with Pat White remaining an active part of the Wildcat formation. Thigpen is also very athletic and has experience with gimmicky offenses, so he could be another tool for the Dolphins to use when they go to the Wildcat.

To Ron Jaworski's dismay and Jon Gruden's delight, Miami figures to use the formation more than ever with Pennington out for the year.

FYI, from ESPN:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4516236

The Miami Dolphins acquired quarterback Tyler Thigpen from the Kansas City Chiefs for an undisclosed draft pick on Tuesday.

The move is to have insurance behind Chad Henne, who likely will start in place of Chad Pennington. Pennington dislocated his right shoulder -- the same one that has been operated on twice before.

Pennington will seek a second opinion from orthopedic specialist Dr. James Andrews, who performed the two previous surgeries. On Tuesday, Jeff Darlington of the Miami Herald told ESPN's "First Take" that the appointment is scheduled for Friday.

Sources familiar with the injury told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen that the Dolphins expect Pennington to be out the rest of the season.

Pennington hurt his shoulder Sunday in a 23-13 loss at San Diego.

The quarterback shakeup comes with the Dolphins already reeling. They're 0-3 after Pennington led an improbable run to the AFC East title last season. Henne, a second-round draft choice in 2008, has been considered Pennington's heir apparent for more than a year.

Son of a bitch.

Dolphins trade for Tyler Thigpen for an undisclosed draft pick per ESPN Alerts. I'll look for a link to a story.

Damnit... he's a hell of a lot better than the other losers they have.

The days are gone when we should be concerned about the Tyler Thigpen's of the world.

Glad to see the Coastal Carolina kid will get a shot to start somewhere. How long will it take for him to take the job from Henne?

This was a move the Fins had to make because they had no one with experience behind Henne.

The Fins are still doomed, though, so the trade doesn't matter.

Don't get me wrong, the Fins suck and without knowing the playbook, Thigpen will likely not be contributing anytime soon. And it certainly doesn't worry me for anything going on this season.

But that said, I for one actually kind of like Thigpen and prior to drafting Sanchez wanted the Jets to make the move to get him in the offseason. He was stuck on a god awful team last year, but performed pretty damn well all things considered. For the Dolphins long term future, I think he's got a much better chance to be a real QB for them than the other bums they've got, and frankly, that doesn't make me particularly happy.

Concerned? No. But I certainly liked the Dolphins better without Thigpen than with him. :P

Fair enough.

I would like to see Miami start Henne in week 4, then bench him the next week. I'd like to get the first crack at Thigpen in the Monday nighter. You know, to give the kid a welcome to the AFC East. ;)

I agree 100%. He's better than Henne, that I'm pretty confident about. Given the schedule this year, we probably won't face him, though. Hopefully he's just good enough to keep the fish from going after a franchise QB with their high first round draft pick next April, but still bad.

It would've been awesome if they traded for Brett Ratliff, instead! :rl:

I liked what i saw from this kid last year on a horawful chiefs team with no O-line. Although he did have 2 very viable targets in Tony G and Dwayne Bowe...he won't have anything close to those 2 on our squad. But like the the dude a couple a posts up said, i hope this doesnt give the false illusion of hope and prevent us from doing what this franchise has been too scared to do...spend a hight draft pick on a franchise QB.

Whoa BZ, if you really want to hit us in the gut, remind us that we passed on Drew Brees... Twice :mad0259:

This sir is the one that bothers me. Altough at the time i thought Daunte Cullpepper was a hell of a consolation prize...we all know how that worked out...i got a friggin authentic cullpepper jersey that i wore once and it stares me in the face everytime i go in my closet.

Is Brady Quinn even the starter in Cleveland anymore? Or is it Derek Anderson again? Or maybe now it is Brett Ratliff? WHO KNOWS!

Brady Quinn is a better pick than Pat White and Henne. They ****ed with his head in Cleveland and now he is with the QB killa, Mangini.

If he had gone to the Dolphins... different story.

Sometimes, the FANS are right.

I doubt Pat White ever even starts a game.

That was a horrible pick and besides everything else, convinced me that the Fins are not only doomed this year but for the rest of the Sparano/Parcells tenure.

The Wildcat was a good stopgap measure. The offense stunk last year so they needed to come up with a gimmick to be competitive.

A smart HC/GM would appreciate that they got away with something last year so now in year 2 it was time to start building a legitimate offense.

So, what do they do? They wasted a 2nd round pick on a gimmick player for their gimmick offense. That's ridiculous. Clearly, the HC/GM drank the Kool Aid and disregarded the realities of the NFL.

The Fins had 3 picks in the 1st 2 rounds and they drafted 2 CBs and White. Ridiculous. The lack of bona fide play makers on offense was a bigger problem than their secondary. The Fins had a chance at Hakeem Nicks & Kenny Britt who would help this offense more than White ever will.

Poor self evaluation was, in part, the cause of Mangini's demise. Sparano & Parcells have made the same error.

To the bolded point, this was yet another HC/GM combo who drank the Penningtology Kool-Aid as well, so are you really that surprised?

.

We did not trade up. The pick used on White was the one we got for trading Taylor. It was a wash.

I think this new regime really F'd up down there and set this team way back. They brought in a very limited veteran that forced them to create a gimmick offense that caught teams by surprise. Make no mistake about it, the Wildcat was not the reason for their success last year, their D beat up an terrible schedule. Teams were having a really hard time scoring on them and their Wildcat was doing just enough to win games by eating clock and giving them a couple of TD/FG opps a game.

Then they were fooled by the success, did nothing to try and develop a legitimate NFL offense and instead, actually took a player in the 2nd round to help them run the offense when their RB's were the reason for the success of the offense. And this guy has no business playing QB in the NFL in any system.

The whole thing makes no sense. The sad part is for their sake, all those rookies who played so well last year and gave them a glimer of hope, look terrible this season. Its kind of nuts.

I truly think the dolphags reach 0-8.
